Just wanted to say this was awesome! We’ve seen this and we think it’s pretty cool to see some of your opinions on the current state of the game. Thanks to everyone who participated!

Ya! It really was helpful. The survey mirrored a lot of things we’ve seen on the forums – but had it all in one spot.

It was also nice to see we have a good “read” on the playerbase – some of the things you guys rated as big issues are things we also consider to be our top priorities!

Are you going to do anything about this?
This been said for months and months and as a developer all you came up with was a another node capping map. WoW had 3-4 major PvP updates you guys did not do a jack especially for a new game. Little slap here and there and we still people howling with furry about certain brocken mechanics / professions.

You guys are absolutely clueless based on what I have seen in a video about state of the game. You are trying to buff already too powerful class (mesmer) based on what? So mesmer will have an easier time killing Minion Master Necro – spec that nobody uses at high level.

PvP in this game is dieing if not dead and unless you take some initiative in your hands or listen to feedback you will lose little bits of community that is left.

For the love of god do something about this game. If spells / skills are too cheesy you need to rework it. Make that all professions will take skill to play instead of a huge disparity.

You did not need a survey to hear the community. This post will probably fall on deaf ears like hundred did whatever. Keep butchering PvP in this game. This is by far one of the worst PvP experiences I had in years from the company that claimed that they are thinking of supporting ESports and the ones who will try to balance this game around “SKILL” yet you did all you possibly could to destroy PvP community and make people rage with a skill and strength disparity on professions.

Here is the idea. Bring back Guild Wars 1. Make it look a lot better than what it is now and remove PvP from Guild Wars 2.

Agreed. I don’t care (much) for balance until there’s an infrastructure that makes these issues more visible and important.

No Spvp features you mean? That will come in time since they’re working on it which we know. A lot of people want profession balances because even if they have more features in the game. The profession balance will still remain crappy which will result to players taking more breaks and no coming back this time leading to a less pvp community. We will always be fighting the same players 24/7 with less servers and those players will either be the elitists or pve players knocking around in the pvp zone. It’s best to balance out the professions first bringing more versatility so players can get a feel on what they really want to play instead being this one or two builds to be viable in pvp. Some players may want to take different routes like hybrid Condi and burst, tank, condi and a little burst or all of every build though that build won’t be as efficient as others.

They’re striving for that Esport dream so they’re lots of reworking they’ll have to do and profession balancing is one of them. Then comes new the features everyone been hoping for.

ranger is one of the best classes. i know a rangerplayer who can play an imbalanced build (tanky healy for himself and mates, removing condis, doing damage ) which can beat my ele and all other classes 1v1. i think ranger is balanced on highest levels… people just need to figure out the opstuff (theorycrafting, timing, skill, experience, movement…) and make it shine….
ranger dont have rtl but they have also good movement skills

Don’t let this discuss in this thread. However I said that ranger is probably the best 1on1 class when using BM build but lack in team fights. Condi remove is done with healing skill and maybe the renewal signet (which should be used only in critical cases). Ranger is not able to heal teammates on its own…he just provides the water field(+regeneration). Mobility is good as it is.
And as i said BM is probably a little bit unbalanced but trapper is ok for know. If you fight against a skilled elementalist he will just stay out the traps and you cant stand a change. I did not say rangers are weak but they are not at top of the food chain :-).

well they shine also in 2v2 . all 30 sec 15 sec waterfield on the ground + eles 5 blastfinishers = this heals a lot in teamfight. they are strong fighting machines. and the game is about 3 point 2point capturing so u will have a lot of 2v2 3v3 1v1… of course mesmer will make snowballtactics due to portal but thats another story…. imo they should just buff longbow skills from ranger …

They’re not the only ones getting changes, any power shift on one profession can out weigh a change on another. Though i agree the OP should put up one of these polls again in the future to see how things shift from patch to patch. But as for where the state of the game is right now, this is very accurate and good feedback.

If I was sitting next to you I would of taken you out the door and not letting you come back inside until the conference was over.

This doesn’t fix anything on warriors, it only makes Banner warriors useful and that’s about. Respect that every warriors does not wish to be banner warriors. Warrior players want to be something else and since our skill slots are limited we’ll need all the survival skills we can get. Warrior players won’t always be with a group if they’re trying to hold down a node for a while.

This is a minor buff to warriors that only supports banner and a few other aspects they’re adding in. It doesn’t help DW warriors and builds they like to make with it.

its true that there is alot of noise surrounding the signal. But , that doesnt mean it doesnt contain information in the technical sense of the word. Ie, reduction of prior uncertainity.

The polls reduces prior uncertainity about which classes are likely to need balance adjustments. Though its an insufficient data set to draw any strong conclusions from by itself. Its a piece of the pie, viewed in that context its useful.

50% of people think the ele is the strongest class. I think this gives anet a free hand to nerf them significantly now. As to achieve a % that high means they must be really OP.

In terms of the warrior I agree with them at Sotg that they have to be careful cos the warrior is close to good (it is for sure viable now). A reworking of the tactics minor traits is what I would like to see and a 20% buff to all the heals a warrior has too.

While i’m not exactly disagreeing. I know in other similiar class based pvp games (like tf2) you’ll hear balance squabble, but its usually more easily solved and in a lot of cases the problem requires a change to the map, not the class. Also, a game like TF2 the classes are incredibly unique in their play style and each bring something truley different to a battle.

in a game like guild wars 2 however. The classes are not quite as defined and a lot of their roles and abilities over-lap. So your going to feel more competitive of one to the next due to this.

I think each professin being able to do something much better than the others is important. No profession should have no weakness or be the best at everthing. The map design just needs to be better designed so each profession can be impactful in its own unique way. And the last maps have made a lot of headway in this. So while there will always be balance issues and complaints (especially in a game where each of 8 professions have over 1000 combinations of amulets, jewels, runes, sigils, traits, master traits, weapons, utilitys, elites…) It can be a lot better than it is now.

EDIT: and the people working on this game know this, thus why they’re making improvements.

Pretty sure “class balance” also includes “spec balance” within classes.

My interpretation of the results: Inter-class balance isn’t bad, intra-class balance is god-awful.

What good is a Ladder at the current state of the game?

I could totally agree on a Ladder for Guilds (in structured tPvP) or a Ladder that’s actually saying sth. about skill (Like the QP-Ladder did), but a Ladder for individual Players in the current state of the game – it doesn’t even make sense:

1) We already have rank and pretty detailed statistics about your PvP-accomplishments.
2) What would they even base the Ranking on, now that the only thing truly saying something about skill is gone? Will they base it on your rank, which would be ridiculous, will they base it on tournament-performance (will they split it between single-join and join as team?). And how exactly does it say anything about skill if you win in a tournament where half the time one team is missing players, where the matchmaking doesn’t seem to work and where single-joiners get teamed against full premade Teams?
3) How will it make the experience in the game any better? Will ppl truly play more and farm all day to get a better ranking, when there is already a rank that will probably say about the same about your skill (not much, only about the amount of time you’ve played).

Also, who needs a Ladder if there are no ppl playing? Gotta be reaaally satisfying to see you’re in the Top100 of 200 active PvP-Players.

Also, some great and successful games have no Ladder (most MOBAS have an ELO, but no Ladder), or no “clear” Ladder (like SC2, where ppl are split up into Leagues and then split up even more into sub-groups of this League, so you could be Diamond Rank 1 in an easy and low populated Diamond-Group and still be a worse Player than sm1 thats ranked lower in a Group with higher quality and quantity of Players).

The only good thing that could come with a Ladder is a decent ELO-System and finally a Matchmaking-System that could work, but I highly doubt that this is what ANet understands as a “Ladder”. They’ll just add up your Glory and if we get REAAAALLY lucky, they’ll weigh wins from sPvP higher than hotjoin.

A working Ladder is at this state of the game useless and I highly doubt you will attract any truly competetive Players back to the game with it; it’ll basically be sth. for lowranked hotjoiners and solo-queuers, which are IMHO not what GW2 needs now – it needs very competetive Players that play with organized Teams, why?

1) Those Players are more likely to stream and actually have Viewers, which is great for GW2.
2) Those Players are more likely to seek out sponsorship and organize Tournaments, participate in them etc.
3) These Players are more likely to attract People that are looking for a great e-Sports-Title (wow; AZUBU und Curse etc. have a GW2-Team? Better check that out!)
4) But they will also attract more casual Players that haven’t heard from GW2.

The more time ANet invests into the Ladder, the later we get Observer-Mode and custom Arenas and those features will actually make GW2 grow, because it enables e-Sport to grow.

Id also like to point something out:

After pve sectors have participated in the survey the happiness with anet communication has grown notably. I think this just confirms the huge difference between the communication we see in the pvp forums and the others.

For the strongest/Weakest classes, I just want to say that Mesmers and Elementalists are considered the strongest by many people because they’re also the two hardest, in my opinion. If the class is hard, it only makes sense for it to be a little ahead of the others because it takes more time to get decent with them. I also don’t like how some of the results were in the middle lol. Just felt like commenting for once

And balance shouldn’t revolve around skill cap. I play my engineer because it’s a high cap class and a multikit have a lot to micro manage/time. I never get bored during a fight. But I don’t play my class to be more powerful.

If you balance the game around that, any competitive team will only play the most complicated class to have a higher skill cap. That wouldn’t be a good thing.

By the way, I was pretty bored and was looking at the survey. Am I the only one that saw that?

A ladder will not help any if the game is boring. I honestly don’t expect players to come back with class balance, spectator mode or a ladder system. They need to make the game fun, which IMO would be done with something other than conquest.

After the patch… I expect to face only mesmers (in hot joins, for clarity).

I like how he states the big issues you listed are items on their priority list. Last time i checked the new map was not on the top of the priority. Yet they added it. I remember Ladders and ratings being top priority. They keep adding things we don’t want and ignore class balance issues.

One question that I felt was a bit off was the:

“Feelings towards ANet’s communication towards players”

I feel like this needed to have some sort of comparison to be appropriate. For instance:

“Does ANet communicate to players better or worse than other gaming companies?”

The reason being is if you as ANYONE “Should this company be more open about what it is doing?” the answer is almost unanimously going to be “Yes”. But I feel like ANet does a pretty good job of communicating with it’s players, compared to other gaming companies (Frequent blog posts, Q&A’s, interviews, it’s almost daily that I see something new from them) but the question is very leading so of course they are going to say “I WANT MORE” because consumers always want more.

“As far as MMO’s go the balance in this game is good” that doesn’t really say much when this game is trying to become a top-notch PVP game. The PVP in other MMO’s have pretty low standards and aren’t even close to being a fair competitive game. I’d rather have this game have high standards and try to become a popular PVP game rather than some PVP tacked onto an MMO like the ones you find in all the other MMO’s. Who cares if it’s an MMO. The point here is the PVP part of the game, not the PVE or wvw.

Feel free to name a single competitive PvP game, outside of FPS shooters and I’ll show you a forum of balance whingers. People who whinge for a balanced state of nirvana never stop. They just keep on going, like a kitten cancer.

Every single game has this virus and I can understand why developers just outright ignore them unless its a bug or an unintended issue. You please one faction of the balance whingers and another one pops out and spreads like kittenroaches.

Must be mighty easy to sit there and kitten talk how important balance is when you’ve got two of the best classes in your Signature.

Having a “strongest” and “weakest” option for classes only, doesn’t portray anything solid in terms of class balance, and the fact that it is both hotjoin and tpvp makes it even more vague.

50% of people think the ele is the strongest class. I think this gives anet a free hand to nerf them significantly now. As to achieve a % that high means they must be really OP.

They aren’t. One build with a few variations is too powerful. That is not an entire profession. That is why I dislike such polls, because if they were to act on random noise, it would put GC in the same basket as bunker ele, and there is a huuuuuge difference between how these two work. One does, the other not.

Besides, there needs to be more specific criteria for a poll to work properly. This one doesn’t help with class balance at all.

Yes – the balance in this game is not great.
But spvp takes no levelling, and it’s fairly easy to level a character for wvw.
If you’re not playing a mesmer/guardian/ele/thief it’s your own fault, stop handicapping yourself.

I have not played since Nov 13th (quit immediately after the Ascended announcements), but thought I’d briefly put a couple thoughts down:

One, the only reason I’d come back is sPvP. PvE is a mess of RNG and grind, which is precisely what I avoid in MMOs.

Secondly, I have no faith in PvP team. Their time seems to be spent elsewhere, and the changes that are completely necessary would have to overlap with PvE, so I get the impression that even if they wanted to make the adjustments, they can’t due to internal politics.

Third, I’ll say the problem with sPvP is inherent in the combat system itself. Builds are almost always about the numbers behind your character, and not what your character is physically doing. Almost all of the statuses in the game are simply damage or damage reduction buffs and debuffs. In addition, almost all of the armor customization options orbit damage mechanics in some way. Briefly compare this to GW1, where everything was related to increasing your attribute points above the native maximum of 12, at the cost of losing health to do so. In GW2, there is no consequence to piling more and more of one thing onto yourself, which makes it incredibly difficult to balance the game. Far too much of the combat’s design is about the “economics” of your build.

Fourth, builds are all designed by the ANet teams. GW1 comparison: most successful builds were invented by players from the large selection of skills, and ANet was forced to address them. By consequence, most builds in GW2, having been designed by ANet, are terrible. Many traits, skills and especially elites are worthless, or not optimal. Due to the damage-centric design of the game, this also means that most builds are competing with one another over their primary purpose: damage or mitigating. As such, when one is better than the other, due to the fact that they have no true utility to balance the two, one will always win out over the other.

I’m of the opinion that 1) the game is broken in its very design and cannot be fixed without completely redesigning the whole combat system and that 2) no major changes or balancing will ever happen because the focus is so heavily on the PvE team and its product.

I will also say that when Jonathan, or whoever, talks about adding new features like custom tournaments, or so on, I do not care at all. I am looking for actual changes to the game, not new features for a game I do not enjoy playing. I don’t know if internal politics are really keeping these changes from happening, or if it’s a consequence of incompetence, or a combination of the two. Quite frankly, I don’t care. It’s not my job to care about the quality of Guild Wars 2, but as an old GW1 player, I would have preferred to see a much higher quality game than what was released. I, along with many others, will never return unless a dramatic and complete overhaul of the game, the design team and the internal process of production is obvious, complete and advertised in tandem with a massive overhaul to the game’s very core. Speaking directly to anyone involved in PvP development, I think we both know what needs to be done in order to make GW2’s PvP the success it once falsely claimed to desire. I also think we both know that will never happen, for a variety of reasons. As a professional, I would be quite ashamed of what is currently on the market, as well as the future plans to polish what is not worth polishing.

If you can make the necessary changes, good luck to you. If you produce a product worth using, I’ll use it. If you don’t believe such changes are necessary, I can only tell you that you’re being incredibly foolish, and that no effort on your part will ever make your product a success.

I play Guardian as great sword DPS which is a bit meh really and Mesmer as Phantasm spec which is considered sub optimal. It doesn’t bother me though because I like the play style. I regularly get eaten by all classes and I monster most of them aswell.

Too many things in there I just could not answer from not doing them like the new map, and the new stuff that came out since I quit.

Going to make a few statements.

1. Never was on a competitive team, I did get in what I would assume would have been a good spvp guild (Players from guildwars 1 that had some good players in it) but… Due to me being kitten off about the format I just completely refused to play with anyone on a team until they implemented gvg/arenas. Even with the guy I played guildwars 1 with since like 2007 there was some friction between us because we both bought the game for spvp and I wouldn’t play it with him. Had him come to wvw but all that happened was his character was kind of weakly leveled since he bought it at a later date and well, it just didn’t work out.

2. Gvg wouldn’t even satisfy me neither would arenas or open world pvp, however for THIS game open world pvp is probably going to be the best out of the three.

3. As far as for the bottom question I’d like to see a guildwars 3 go into production within the next two weeks. No pve side, and do what they did with guildwars 1 be attentive to the pvp side. While having nearly every single format possible with tournaments in those formats, and even adding secondary cash prized tournaments, and a more gw1 type of playstyle to it but majorly updated, this would attract people from every single mmo’s playerbase AND KEEP THEM THERE IN GW3.

PvE minigames and dungeons are ok, as side things, there is ways to implement them into a strictly pvp game that is also secondary to open world pvp and not required due to other things that would already be in the game, they would be there to take a break from pvp and relax, not to grind, and it would be for fun, how it should be, however people could potentially grind them if they wanted and would have gains from it but nothing anyone doing strictly pvp wouldn’t have, and I have some things written about how to implement this, and a potential pve minigame of something that I enjoyed in a game we’ve all played.

Cannot give my opinion on who is op who is up right now because, the game has had to of changed since like 4.5 months ago or so.

I must’ve missed the sign that said it was a fire sale.
