It took 6 months to add some leaderboards. There is no matchmaking, there are no leagues or anything. I just played a couple of PvP matches and got bored. A friend of mine (who is one of the? few) played like 3000 hours PvP (im not even joking). And now what? I cant even inspect him to see what he was achieved. 2 Weeks ago there were no leaderboards. And this game has no ranking system to see how good he is. And dont even mention the crappy unresponsive combat…

Look at any other game. Like CoD or Battlefield for that matter. Every game has some sort of a progression.? GW2’s pvp has no progression at all… you play 1 match and your friend plays 1000 matches. What is the difference now between you and your friend? He has now some other animal rank.. Woah great! And you cant even inspect him to see his progression… if there was any…

First polish the combat of GW2 and make it more responsive. No unnecessary cast time and “wait for animation” moments. Even the combat of Neverwinter is more responsive. And remove the gliding of the camera! Put a ranking system in sPvP. Leagues or just a number like? Ranking: 2200. And we need matchmaking. I stopped playing GW2 becuase of the lack of these things. People who are still playing GW2 come from GW1, they have never experienced a good and polished e-sports game. I dont want to insult anyone, I think its true.

Oh and really REMOVE THE DOWNSTATE FROM sPVP! This has to happen for sure!

GW1 PvP was miles, leagues, light years ahead of where GW2 PvP is right now. That’s not to say that GW2 cannot reach and surpass what GW1 PvP was, but its not there yet. GW1 PvP was and remains some of the best PvP i’ve experienced in gaming period and I can assure you, I’ve played many PvP games.

There is no matchmaking.

There is… it just doesn’t work too well. Which may or may not have something to do with player count.

Even the combat of Neverwinter is more responsive.

Not sure if serious.

Yes I am very serious. I atleast feel comfortable playing Neverwinter compared to GW2…
Downstate, gliding camera, abilities that once start are uncanclebale etc etc. It hurtst to say, but GW2’s combat is maybe even the most terrible combat I have ever experienced in a game. Killzone 2 and the 3rd person MOBA game (I forgot the name) come pretty close..

Saying etc, etc doesn’t exactly build a point. Moreover I question your understanding of the mechanics of this game, you can cancel an on-going ability/animation so long as its not a mobility skill that has a fixed trajectory and must carry out said trajectory. (Unless, somehow everything is vastly different when not playing a guardian.)

Neverwinter’s combat is not good as far as my opinion of it goes, and its certainly never going to amount to anything in PvP because of the crazy model its running with in the cash shop.

Not sure what you’re talking about, but I think I can safely say 99.99% of decent pvpers in GW1 are disappointed in GW2 pvp and that many have already quit for other games, such as LoL.

Things I can say to this, yes Spv kitten omewhere between garbage and an mmo wanna be version of call of duty, which by all means jumped from being a great franchise to being a money sucker un-competitive, skill less and I dunno how you dare say that game flows well with all the hit detection and other problems that need not to be mentioned.

Ladder boards always been a pain in my opinion, they show close to nothing when you got massive amounts of players and those on top aren’t those who are skilled but those who breath, eat and kitten the game for a life.

I have experienced many E-sports oriented games, I’m kitten good in most of them and I do agree, GW2 is nowhere near E-sport level, in fact is not even close to competitive level or even a decent pvp level but hey the game can improve and become better, sure they seem to only enjoy adding more useless pve content “With some actually nice content every other full moon” but pvp in the game is close to none existent.

I mainly play for WvW now, do some random fights in spvp when I’m feeling bored or what to “try” some mechanics. But they seriously need to fix class balance, progression and rewards. As it is now, spvp accounts for nothing lol.

With the staff they have, GW2 will have to have all the luck in the world to get anywhere.
GW1 at least had a good base system to work off of, a combat and map setup that drew in hundreds of thousands of dedicated players over 10? years… GW2 had a larger population from the getgo… and its gameplay has driven away even more, in a few months time.

aaaanyways, GW2 has allot more to fix than just leaderboards and animation times?… the games gameplay pretty much picks up a stick and beats the vast majority of people away from it… there’s a reason literally no competitive team is sticking around… and it has little to do with achievements and inspecting.

Just cus, I wrote up a large list of tweaks addressing allot of the games terrible issues, stuff that would push it more towards the world of Esport lvl PvP, but I dunno, I think they’re good idea’s but probably just more a bored ramble than anything since the only time to really address stuff of that magnetude was in alpha.

ArenaNet have improved a lot the sPvP with leaderboards and maps and balance… I know what your searching and ArenaNet going to make it better and better. For World of warcraft did i take 1 year and 6 month to get Arena with Rating, but wasnt a good start there.

It take times for company to make a perfect PvP System, but i know ArenaNet know what to do. They are going to Team Que or maybe have 1 Tour every month with ingame prizes.

Now we got Rating that’s not working so great. But for 2 month ago didnt we have leaderboards, and we did have Tickets to play rank matches!

It’s going to be better and better stay and wait for it.

Oh and really REMOVE THE DOWNSTATE FROM sPVP! This has to happen for sure!

There is a great great underlying problem in your adfirmation; yes pvp in gw2 isn’t the best but:
1)pvp in gw2 is the most free and equal thing i have never seen before. any other mmo require 1000000hours of farming, 1000000gold (or money in general) in order to play at the same level of other players (nerds). Here the pvp is more like “you can do anything, just learn how to do”… which is a great thing (for me at least).
2)do you play pvp (and games in general) for a title? “master of the world” or “i’m superior, you are kitten” are enough? you dont really need a title to show your competence… play and show it!
3)COD and Battlefield are great games… but they are F-P-S, so they are focused on player vs player and it’s normal to have a better consideration of rank. GW2 is a MMO RPG so the most important thing is the comunity, friendship and tactics (not greatly improved, i d say).
GW2 is the game … not a game… you can find some problems, but it’s always something of negligible compared to the entire game’s mechanics…

thats just because people dont bother reviving in hot join so it’s effectively played as if there were no downed state and bad play gets punished.

If they ever add the option to turn off downed state in custom servers it will be the most popular game mode by far. Quote me on it.

I basically agree with topic starter: GW2 sPvP suppozed to be a cybersport and i actually bought game for this only reason.
I really liked the beginning of sPvP developing and i really hoped that sometimes it will be in the same line with LoL, Dota2 and SC2…
Occasionally, they dont develop sPvP at all. There are no other modes then team vs team, some builds are bad, some are good and matchmaking system really sucks…
As an analogy, i can actually use shogun 2 : total war – they had really nice beginning and due to the fact they didnt develop game at any point, it is now played by ~1000 fans…
Hard to say, but the game is dying right now in my opinion.

Broken? If it takes 2 to take 1 person down. Then ideally that means you have a 3 v 4 elsewhere. Given the abilities of your team, you should be able to capitalize mid or the other point by splitting up or focus firing on wherever the 3 zerg. Yes, you may go down, but if it takes 2 people to take you down, as long as you have the point, or the point is neutralized, then you are in good shape. This isn’t team deathmatch if you haven’t realized yet..

1 vs 3 even 1 vs 5 happens regularly in WvW. The fact you don’t have that happen in tournament may be means the match making actually works on personal skill level?

in wvw you fight vs undergeared people or fake level 80s. That’s why im saying you won’t 1v3 in spvp because gear doesnt matter that much.

if players actually died and did not go downed though you would see many more examples of 1v3. Downed state leaves much more opportunity for mistakes and bad play to be made up for compared to other games.

Game would be much more popular and fun to watch without downed state or improved down state where you could stomp in 1 sec.

Game is fun to watch with good shout casters and good camera control. It’s even better with pro players, because you begin to see tactics and coordination. If you could stomp in 1 second, there’s no point in a downed state (which is probably why you said that -_-). Tournament last night had 300 viewers and it was super fun for the players. It’s a start and it wasn’t until I received some advice from better players such as Silven that I actually began to see the major team plays each map and how to challenge different metas with utility, rune, sigil, weapons, etc changes.

Downstate, gliding camera, abilities that once start are uncanclebale etc etc.

I’ve generally never understood the dislike of downed state except on a topic of balance between the classes. Its a mechanic and you learn to play with it, just as in Aion you’d learn to play with flying.

flying didn’t make 2v1 lesser skilled players extremely difficult and 3v1 virtually impossible

wow 300 viewers they might pass the guy who streams auction house play. Sorry but fighting on small points is not fun to watch, it removes certain specs and play styles from even being viable, and stomp in 1 sec would be fine. Look at FPS games with “downed” state, there is no saving, just a last stand bleed out that can be ended with a head shot.

look at the match last night, it was won by point control, back capping and movement rather than superior class skill, which is another reason it’s not fun to watch. People want to see open field skirmishes winning/losing the match, not oh look they capped an undefended node and then 2v1’d the far point while a bunker kept himself alive.

Still happens in hotjoins all the time and there you got no level difference and somewhat equal access to gear.

thats just because people dont bother reviving in hot join so it’s effectively played as if there were no downed state and bad play gets punished.

If they ever add the option to turn off downed state in custom servers it will be the most popular game mode by far. Quote me on it.

We could let this evolve into a theoretical 1v2 battle in which i’d respond with cleave, poison, interrupt or smthg along those lines but your inital point was ~ leet vs scrubs and i don’t see how that doesn’t apply to the case i brought up. Especially since downed opponents can still cc, damage and get potentially up again.
I think you are just making too many exceptions why a won 1v2 is never truly won.

Edit: Also the point about adding a healer to a fight was certainly not that he arrives when someone is killed, but that he arrives when someone is close to beeing killed. Because that’s what downed state is, an extension of your health pool.

the difference is you require a specific class to assist you, which is strategy. You have to send your healer to save him, vs anyone can come “save” you in GW2. Do you send the healer or keep him back with the rest? vs whoever closest/fastest go help then return. like i said, add a no down state option in custom servers and it will be the most popular mode played.

You may or may not be right. But fact is, there were consistently 300 viewers throughout the whole stream. That means people didn’t stop watching or at least didn’t close the stream window and ideally that means it was interesting to watch for those who tried to watch it. And this is a team game with the game mode ‘capture point’. Of course it’s going to rely heavily on teamplay. I think your view of skill is who can kill one another, but that’s not what the current available game mode is. If you want a deathmatch game mode, sure—I’ll support it for more game modes and that will rely more on your ability to win a 1v1. But this current game mode is fine and works (or is getting better at least) and the way you define skill is MUCH different. It’s not about landing the kill, it’s about securing points and knowing when and where to go; if you can get a kill, wonderful, but it’s your job to make sure you are in the right place in the right time to defend your point if you can or support people who are outnumbered.

it happens in WvW because of level 80s in full exotics facing 5 level 15s in blues.

Hmm..maybe you should watch more WvW videos, plenty are posted while the player 1 vs 3 full level 80s. Please don’t make assumptions when you clearly don’t have the knowledge.

Streams tend to go up in count as the game goes on (since more people see the fact its streaming or show up late).
But aaanyways, hardcore (you have to be to stick with the game at this point) dedicated fans watching a match is different than the general gaming population.

Conquest doesn’t seem to do shoutcasting any favors, the combat is decent for it, but the map is terrible.

The games PvP population tanked after launch and still isn’t going up.

Forum squabbling has nothing to do with whether or not a game will be an Esport, that’s entirely in Anets hands and they lost literally every Esport centric team because of their gameplay!!! if it was a great game for esports only lacking a few features, major teams would have stuck around, practiced and kept teams together for when it had these custom arenas, spectator mode, and leaderboards.
Few if any major teams have come back.

GW2 has a world of issues all its own when it comes to competitive play, saying so isn’t trying to kill its chances at being an esport, but actually, helping (if marginally)
(awareness is the first step to change)

No big team came back because of them.

That’s only when it’s already popular lol. I mean, it’s making improvement and relatively the count went up from 200 to 300+ if we want to start at the beginning of the stream. And there’s still room to see where it’ll go. Just because conquest did bad in the past doesn’t mean it’ll always be bad, then we wouldn’t have anyone attempting innovation if we tried to copy what just ‘works’. -shrug-

Innovation is fine.
If it is done well.

Not everyone constantly innovates everything for a reason.
Especially when it comes to something as large as an MMO.

Whichever ‘big team’ left probably couldn’t face our top tier players now.

Seriously?
Are you implying that the few ‘GW2 top teams’, ones that for the most part are just groups of friends (a major one of which has only been together for a few months time), are scaring away highly competitive teams
??
Ugh, I guess, whatever helps you sleep at night?

It’s forums, nobody really cares about the necessary major changes…
I even made a thread throwing out issues and ways to fix the most janky mechanics of GW2, but tragically everyone decided ‘ENGIES SUXXX’ is a more important topic.

Nah, you interpretted me wrong. I am not saying anything about scaring other teams. It’s just a matter of fact that if you don’t play, you don’t get better. And with all the balancing changes, I doubt any returning ‘top team’ will be able to handle a pug group of top tier players. I am just not one to mope about losing top teams. Yes, whoever is best make up the top teams, but that doesn’t mean that they are esport level competitive teams…

These teams don’t sprout out of the woodwork, this level of competitive teams typically move from game to game, so finish your train of thought.

Competitive teams won’t be good if they take prolonged breaks from a game…
Then why are they taking a long break from GW2??
If it had great gameplay with esports potential, why aren’t they still keeping up to speed on the game?
Why haven’t they even posted out threads or anything of those likes, talking about the features they need to see before coming back??

I don’t know why the teams who left are even considered competitive anymore. They aren’t competing in gw2 due to not playing, so they are NOT a competitive team in tpvp anymore and it doesn’t matter why they left or why anyone other than me, myself leaves. I enjoy the game, and I play it competitively. When I see others play it competitively, it makes it even more fun. I don’t need the top team players from the past to come back or even stay to nurture my competitiveness. I just need people to compete with. And there are people compete with no matter how much you want to deny it. And that’s a competition. If that’s not your kind of competition, maybe find a new hobby?

Aaah.
See.
Finally, you talk about what you want from the game…
Just medium level play that can feel pretty competitive.

That has nothing, like at all, to do with an esport.
Cool, that you found what you want, thnks for the complete sidetrack. Anyways… now that you know… don’t go saying ‘people are raining on the esports parade and that is bad’ because you don’t really care.
You just want your base level of competition to stick, not to have super leet korean teams playing the game 24/7 for the sake of prize money.

I’m sure I’ve played in more tournaments than most of the players in this tpvp forum. So no, my kind of competition is not ‘base’ level. I am not talking about friendlies. I am talking about facing people who want to be the best at all costs. Koreans are good, but they don’t rule ever game out there. Maybe stick to your korean fanboy games? Not worth talking to you anymore kid.
