Gamescon LAN - Why now?
Hey all,
I’ve seen some concerns in this thread regarding allocating developer resources for tournaments and events, and I just wanted to let you know there’s no reason to be alarmed! While I’m sure our programmers and designers would make for awesome Event Managers, they’ve got a game to work on! Projects like Tournament of Legends, our tournament at gamescom, and anything similar that we do in the future is largely owned by myself and our community/marketing teams.
I had a lot of fun working on the community team earlier this year as the PvP Community Coordinator, and I’m really excited to be back on the team in this new role (Events Manager). For anyone who has been around since the start, you know I’m very passionate about the competitive side of Guild Wars 2. I didn’t want to jump in and ring a bunch of bells announcing my new role when I moved into the position – I’d rather just make things happen.
Hope that all makes sense.

And it has actually invigorated the game considerably. Look at all the people trying to stream etc. This imitative must of helped the game ALOT. So even if OP doesn’t care about it it is undeniable that this is helping the game ALOT.
For example, there is no way I would watch basically anything that is GW2 (personally I prefer playing and am casual) but even I can say this thing has done really good for the game. Hopefully you can keep up the momentum though

The tournament isn’t a bad thing. I’m just curious as to why right now? I understand that developmental and marketing would be two completely different departments. None the less, resources are being expended to showcase Guild Wars 2 at Gamescon, when they could be spent in more pressing aspects of the game.
I’m assuming the developers and marketing all pull from the same pot of money.

Different departments in a company usually have seperate allocated budgets.

This.
But really it’s at the twitch booth Anet does not really have to do much. Twitch will do the setup of the computers. With gw2 having no local support the players just log into eu servers. So doubt it’s much work and at gamescon the less work and more drink you can do the better. That’s the vibe at gamescon it’s pretty party mode. Community just has to hope Anet gets inspired by the games on the real stages and not booths. Anything at a booth is side show.

Ok, so I guess we are to presume that the money and time being invested in Gamescon event is being invested regularly in the eSports department.
I’d personally find that even more disconcerting.

Even still, the planning and staffing of the event is probably a larger expenditure than what we see on a monthly basis, I imagine.
I’m going to slow it down and say hopefully that is the case. I feel that I’m being a bit too critical right now.

The gamescom LAN is an illusion to make believe chinese that GW2 is esport & competitive. It’s just marketing. Nothing related to e-sport.
For me ToL is completely bullkitten. It’s just a random e-tournament with virtual items as a crash price.
The 2 only events i remember from GW2 that really worth it were the 10.000$ PAX 2013 and the MLG 2013 ( was very professional ).
At least, bunch of players are going to meet in Europe, and that’s a great thing, but that’s it.
I agree with this the most. Seems like a move to simply dazzle outsiders.
Thief – Radderic
Mesmer – Smash Kablooey
why do you do a pvp tournement at gamescon while you guys don’t even care for pvp in the game? why do we have skyhammer after seeing the remake version 7 months ago already?
marketing people …… meh they ruin games….
I think it would be one of the most basic events to run they pretty much have a big brother to help with twitch. But I get what you’re saying “is it worth the time effort and money” and can this be used in better ways.
I’d do in house lans at Anets office fly in players use that room they have for there own stream. Give top players a chance to enjoy the office and meet the creators. Gamescon is a drunken mess. Some top teams don’t go for this reason.

Is your role will be include all Competitive modes in gw2? not just T sPvP?
ty..
“There Is No Shame In Not Knowing; the Shame Lies In Not Finding Out.”
gw2 players would complain about free ice cream.
Events budget for the year probably goes generally to things like pax, e3, etc. Be happy as a pvper that they’re here promoting pvp at these events and not like… living world crap.

and be happy they are developing new maps and expanding the pvp capabilities… oh wait…
^ continues to ignore the point.
There’s plenty to qq about with gw2 pvp. Supporting pvp events is not one of them.

Hes actually completely on point. Even if it is with sarcasm he responded to the thread. To be honest with you, you really are the one who ignored the point.

Copy / paste so works every time…anyways with that non event. Everyone should just continue as to why now or why even bother watching them at all?
