Getting match made with new players
People have been complaining about this forever. The matchmaking uses an average of MMR to make teams so you can and will be matched with widely varying levels of skill players if you solo. They are fixing it next season by having your teammates only be players that are very close to your MMR level. It is very frustrating to have to deal with people that don’t know the basics all the time.
One of two things:
1. Broken matchmaking
2. He was in a party with another ruby. In the past, a lot of cheesers would pair with low levels so that they’d get easier matches. Now everyone in a party takes on the division of the highest rated member. It is definitely a good thing overall, but has some drawbacks like the scenario you mentioned.
I don’t believe his story. Getting to ruby in two days is an excessive amount of playtime, especially considering he would have lost most of the early games.
Edit: Actually style’s guess that he was in a party makes a lot of sense.

Bra (80 Guard), Fixie Bow (80 Ranger), Wcharr (80 Ele)
Xdragonshadowninjax (80 Thief)

1. Rank 20 is easy, I did it on an alt account already and it didn’t even take the full two days. Also he started 2 days prior so it was his third day of pvp.
2. He was emrald.
3. He was solo queued.
4. Fix your game.

You just got a dev response 10 minutes after you posted that addressed your concern and promised a fix. Did you really need to be a jerk with #4?
I mean holy crap…
I was on a team yesterday in RANKED (we lost) and I somewhat raged at our dragonhunter in the heat of the moment. He calmly messaged and asked me what he should have done and how he could be better. I asked him how long ago he had started playing PvP and he said only TWO DAYS prior and had only bought the game TWO weeks earlier.
Of course I apologized to him as I didn’t realize anet was giving me such noobie players on my team and I taught him a few things and even gave him a guild invite.
But my point is I’m in ruby, I have 2,479 games played, and 5,352 hours logged in game… Why am I getting placed on a team with a person who has likely played less than 20 pvp games? Does anet want me to find another game to play?
There is no L2P issue on my side that could EVER counterbalance this issue. This type of matchmaking turns the game into essentially a 4v5 (or worse than a 4v5 if he is causing enemies to rally).
This makes no sense.
a. You need to be rank 20 in pvp before you even unlock ranked pvp. (that is more than 20 games right there)
b. If your in Ruby, he would have to be in at least sapphire to be matched with you. You need 40 wins to make it to sapphire. at a 50% win rate, that is 80 games.
So, at the vary least, that player had played around 130 games of sPvP. GW2 doesn’t have an overly complicated pvp system. Three point domination. 130 games is plenty of experience to get a hang of the game.

What makes you say that? I’ve had sapphire players matched with me as a diamond before. Of course it was pretty late at night where there were less players, but it’s still possible. As far as I know, there’s nothing to prevent you from getting matched with/against players in lower league divisions.
Just check out all those screen shots from the catastrophic matchmaking threads.

As much as I agree, the player is still a nub after 130 games. He will still have rotation issues, engagement issues against X build variant he hasn’t seen before, ect.
Not roaming properly once in a game, or staying on point all game, or just pew pewing with a bow all game, is enough to warrant OP’s post and …sadly, enough for the DH to reach the rank he’s at now thanks to RNG odds.
