After getting to 80 at launch I decided to try sPVP. I wanted to ‘know’ my character first before I got into an arena. Since, Ive done nothing but PVP up to level 22 Dolyak which has, unfortunately, taken me far longer than I guess I was expecting. 1-22 took me about a day and a half of PVE – why is PVP different? And there’s…80 levels of this?

I guess what I’m saying is, after playing the same 4 maps literally ad-nasueum and only haven gotten this far (with rewards being purely aesthetic) I’m hoping you’ve got something up your sleeve to keep this ‘fun’. Otherwise it’s going to get very boring running the same maps, in the same mode, for the same gear (yaaaaaaaay ‘boxes’!) until the end of time.

I realize you’ve got a lot on your plate but please assist. Thank you-

Shrubfelty – 80 Ele
Angus the Black – 80 War
Adrich – 80 Thief

while i would have to agree gw2 still has quite a bit diversity when it comes to pve such as your race, weapon type, class, etc while pvp becomes quite a drag with the slow glory and experience rate and not to mention 1 game mode and 4 maps it becomes hard to stay enveloped in pvp. while im not a die hard wow fan i enjoyed their pvp system, not demeaning anet, maybe a page out of their book couldnt hurt. anyway fun game cant wait to finish my first computer build so i can truly enjoy the game. keep it coming anet

I think the problem some people (not me i don’t care about skins i just play for fun) are having is with the reword system. As soon as you hit the next tier of rank, you burn through tens of thousands of Glory buying Chests and get all the gear from that rank range in the first hour of hitting that rank (10,20,30,…). Then you have nothing to look forward to until you get another 10 ranks. This just gets worse the higher in rank you are as it takes way longer to hit the next tier. For people that like getting rewards this can feel very boring and repetitive.

how about because PvP is fun, helping your team win and you’re win\loss ration being good enough. Why do you need the carrot on a stick. I really hope this doesn’t turn into a crappy kitten gear grind like WoW where all you do is grind for that seasons latest and greatest and it basically comes down to who has the most time to farm gear. If you think all the QQing in this forum is bad just about class abilities and builds, it would be 10 fold if you started introducing tier sets.

WoWs handling of pvp is dismal, all it is gear = roflstomp. sPVP and tPVP is about being balanced.. so that’s why it’s the same gear across the board. The only thing that changes is builds, player skill and ability. If you’re that bored, try running new builds. learn a new class. I really hope they don’t go down the WoW route of how they handle PvP.

I totally agree with the OP and have had a lot of fun so far with sPvP but it is slowly getting boring and tedious. For now it still has my attention and I don’t plan on giving up, but I can’t really see myself even hitting level 40 let a lone level 80 without losing interest in its current state.

Perhaps if sPvP gear had stats that could be used in WvW as well that would give me motivation to stick with it. Unfortunately, gear for just aesthetics is much less appealing than something that can actually be used.

With that said, the game is still really new and I am confident they will implement something to keep us interested down the line.

Im real happy with the rewards being 100% aesthatic. Only suggestion is more maps in time and new modes, but otherwise this is great and its a new game, people want to much too soon for a non sub game.

indeed its boring and no rewards. i only like wvw and pve. what they should do is split pvp/pve skills so nerfs don’t break classes when its only meant to balance them in pvp.

+1 for your post and name.

PvP for the most part, in any game FPS/RTS/MMO etc is played usually because you simply enjoy the gameplay, not for rewards. Do SC2 players whine that there is no reward for playing?

But I agree the game needs more modes. Capture the flag wouldn’t work because of swiftness and teleport abilities (unless the game would disallow those mechanics for FCs). Murderball sounds interesting, and kind of like how WvW works with the orb or w/e. The minecart mode or w/e (thinking of TF2) could work. However I feel that a lot of time and effort went into map design, and balancing the PvP system around the game only being Conquest mode for now.

I can’t really picture too many non-unique modes with the style of gameplay GW2 has. Can you, honestly?

SC2 players don’t whine because they ARE getting something for playing. SC2 is an e-sport because it is well balanced. You play for rating, just like in WoW arena. I don’t see any such system beneath 5v5 in GW2. I was hoping there would be 3v3 arena and hopefully 2v2…

I like the aesthetic only rewards, only way to keep it balanced. But those need a big revamp.

They need to make the aesthetics really stand out for those who have reached good levels in Spvp. The chest rewards are a joke, and often times the armor upgrades from chests on Medium armor don’t change the looks at all from the original skin. Yes you can Mystic Forge new ones, but even those up to Dolyak look just plain stupid (Med armor).

Make it big and shiny, and they will come…and stay, even if the stats remain the same, and they should.

Cosmetic rewards are ok for me, allthough other things could be added without breaking balance.

What astounishes me is the fact I expected tons of variations in pvp challenges in this game.

Granted: WvW is epic… which also makes it a pure zerg and spam fest.
But ok, it’s big and different and can be real fun.

The maps for point captures are quite well made, real nice how the points are close, yet the terrain is very creative int these relative small area’s.
I really really like those maps.

But it does start to bore me already that it’s always the same game, over and over and over again…
No capture the flag or anything else, just that one game.

On top of this the structure of these maps do seem to reward zerging more than anything. Almost every fight is imbalanced in numbers. But this of course, is rather typical of these kinds of battles.
Nothing the developpers can do about that one.

What they could do is create battles with different objectives, not just whoever has the most players at any given point…

The whole fun of it is developing skill and learning your profession better imo. I’m still having a blast with sPvP and rarely do tournies since I have no static team. I also still do PvE and am slowly gaining levels when I want to take a break.

That being said, they could add more cosmetic PvP rewards to be seen outside PvP matches, such as character aura’s or special unique items that grant you set skills for a period of time on use that are permanent but can’t be used on PvP maps or in PvE/WvW.

I also wouldn’t mind some CTF modes as soon as they fix the Mesmer portal while carrying bundles/repair kit. That would be some fun times I think, I loved it in RIFT. Whitefall Steppes was the most fun map in that game.

I think this post deserves some extra notice. Theres no point in repeating him if i can just quote. Also, change the mandatory blue/red armor in pvp. It pretty much defeats the entire purpose of the items, because be honest, nobody wants to be blue.

I feel that the focus on zerging also increases the feeling of pvp being an uninteresting grind. Every fight feels different if the numbers are smaller. A fight against a thief and ele is nothing like a fight against a Guardian and Engi. Whereass a big blob of people and summoned creatures always feels like the same thing: a zerg, a mindless mob of pitchfork wielding peasants.
Yes, tpvp has this, but sometimes i just feel like grinding (superior amounts of) glory in a non-stressfull or competative environment. There’s no reason for this part to be so inferior to tournaments. Not to mention its most likely whats played by most of pvp players thus, and even if this isnt true, a rather big part of the game. It shouldnt be ignored and dismissed as just a noobville.

You play for rank in sPvP. Call it rating/rank/points/candy/etc and its still the same thing.

What you refer to about esports is where they’re going with this game. It’s brand new, it’s still got lots of bugs, glitches, exploits, and, most importantly, balance changes to be dealt with.

Do not compare Gw2 to WoW.

Arena pvp in Cata was tremendously unbalanced, and from what i understand, the same thing is occuring in MoP.

Yea but we aren’t playing Cata WoW or MoP WoW for that reason. What we want is for GW2 to give us that same reason why we played TBC WoW and WotLK WoW. A ranked ladder and fun PVP (arenas).

Blizzard ruined arenas in Cata, but that doesn’t mean that they weren’t great PVP before that. GW2 was supposed to do even better, because WoW isn’t focused on PVP at all and GW2 is. GW2 has NOT delivered on that front so far.

GW2 needs more maps, but it needs BETTER maps.

WoW doesn’t even pretend to be a PvPers game and has more tactical maps than GW2.

WAR, which I guess was positioned closest to what GW2 is going for had much more diversity and originality in its maps.

The maps in GW2 are (a) too samey, (b) too frantic – just charging from node to node and © not tactical enough in nature.

In particular I would like to see some capture/hold the item maps or different shapes of nodal domaination maps (e.g. narrow, hilly, in buildings).

im going to use rift as an example since it was the latest mmo i played before gw2(after coming from warhammer for 4 years). rift released with 3 maps that varied in size and game mode. it is absolutely astonishing to me that a pve based game could release with 3 times the amount of game modes that gw2 has, and it doesnt stop there. rift released a 4th game mode that combined aspects of the conquest map, codex, with pve boss killing mechanics on a much larger scale then the previous maps.

how is it possible that Anet dropped the ball this badly? pvp is absolutely boring in this game. same crap over and over and rolling new toons only keeps you interested for so long. fundamentally pvp is repetitious but not like this, gw2 pvp is simply node humping blandness with no changes in sight. the biggest change i expect the developers to focus on for pvp (huge mistake since lack of content makes gw2 a horrible game)would be an actual ranking system that corresponds with paid tournaments, something that SHOULD have been in at release.

way to go Anet for following mythics que in releasing half finished games.

It baffles me that people find cosmetics rewarding, this is because they have yet to realise theres no one looking but themselves, no one cares what you look like your the only one that cares and your the only one looking.

Im at rank 22 and I cant see any reason to waste time on a forge making new looking items. So there is zero reward in spvp for me accept for the fun of playing, however I also like the fact that its a level playing field, I would recommend a system which unlocks content as you rise in rank this would be very rewarding.

I’m fine with the rewards being for style only, however i too am starting to get that feeling of boredom creeping in. Very little variation in the maps and it’s still doing the same thing map to map. Less and less people are logging in during the times i play in guild so organised tournaments are becoming scarce, PUG tournaments are no different than sPvP other than being 5v5 as they are just as pointless.

Oh yeah, and what’s with showing you the next rank chest as a possible reward when you hit the lvl just before you change ie hit lvl 29 and it tells you you’re getting a dolyak and wolf chest then gives you the dolyak one and 29-30 is 15k instead of 7.5k.. that made me pause for a second. Here’s what you could have won… reminds me of the old tv gameshow Bullseye lol.

Coming back to this thread after a few more evenings of sPvP.

I’m loving my engineer more and more, and i found my own personal style in my build (it’s a scrammble but it has tons of surprises so loving it)

But… capture the point maps… only capture the point maps… nothing but one capture the point map after another.
nice surroundings by the way, and creative on the terrain.

And in sPvP it’s a zerg race isn’t it. Whoever gets lucky on the initial zerg choices seems to win the lottery.
That doesn’t help either.

Point defending in sPvP seems obsolete as a strategy. You just go around and round, hoping you’re running with more players than they are towards that next point.

They did this one type of pvp battle really great I think.
But that’s it: they only did that.

WvW seems rather zergy too, but again it’s a great concept.

These 2 by themselves are not going to keep me thrilled though.
5v5 will be way more strategic, but still the same kittenype of fight.

This. Their needs to be more of an incentive to actually win the game like in starcraft 2 or LoL. If you win in starcraft 2 you move up the rankings and that’s why I play starcraft 2 online. Constantly trying to get to the next league. League of legends if you win you get more influence points which will get you more heroes faster. If you lose you barely get any influence points. Once you hit 30 then a ranking system is implemented to keep you playing. Just having random pick up games filled with random people makes the game anti-competitive. You get points by killing people and doing your own thing. Where if they began implementing glory points by wins (and maybe a matchmaking system similar to LoL/Sc2) I think that alone would make the sPvP better
