Give me variety, and I'll play GW2 again:
Hi, my name is Defektivex.
I primarily play a Warrior.
For a few months I made builds, streamed alot, made a pvp video. Did tPvP, paids etc. etc. etc. since then I ‘quit’ (tentatively) playing GW2
I didn’t quit because of the lack of gametypes, or the community getting smaller and more focused on a few set players.
I didn’t quit because the responses (in my opinion) from ANet didn’t meet the expectations that I desired.
I quit simply because if I wanted to compete on a ‘pro’, or ‘hardcore’ or ‘competitive’ way then I was fixated into a very set number of builds that optimized my class for the role it was pigeonholed into.
I loved Guild Wars 2. It was a lot of fun getting to know my class, getting to know each skill and how it slightly altered my gameplay. But when it came time to put my big boy pants on, I suddenly lost all the flexibility the game provided.
Because of this, I felt pent up. Caged even. Like a kid in a candy shop, but all I’m allowed to eat are week old stale cookies.
For a while I said to myself “it’s ok! things will get fixed, in time things will get better.”
But as the days went on I became more irate, negativity sank in and frustration got the best of me. I quit.Since then I’ve played a number of games – Planetside 2, Forge, Dishonored (not multiplayer, but still good!). Yet I keep looking back to GW2 for that one tweak which would completely change everything.
What I hoped for, no – dreamed for, was not variety through carefully chosen and balanced mechanics. But balanced variety through chaos.
If everyone had (pardon my french) batkitten crazy abilities. The game would be focused around the ever changing variety of builds to counter Class A’s ‘batkitten crazy’ build.
At this stage in the game I feel weathered. There is little left in me that will compel writing up arguments or asking questions to the devs or sitting on my traits page concocting builds. It all seems futile. When I play my Warrior in tPvP, I feel trapped in a box. When all I would love to do is let my imagination run free and provide innovative and new methods of domination to my opponents.
Thank you for reading. I hope you all had a good holiday season.

speaking realistically if nothing really changes in the upcoming patch to PVP then it might be time to just say goodbye permanently to gw2. but i have a feeling nothing will change with the patch and im just waiting for other games to come out or update atm
It’s like you captured my EXACT thoughts in this thread!
I’m also a warrior that is disappointed in the lack of build variety.
I actually started out with the guardian back in BWE1, but by BWE2 it was becoming obvious that the guardian would be pidgeon-holed into a bunker role. So I decided to jump ship to the warrior class in BWE3 (I fell in love with the rifle!). And so I spent the better part of my summer theory-crafting a variety of builds.
However, like the guardian, the warrior also ended pidgeon-holed into a specific role. Unfortunately, the warrior isn’t even the best at this role, so it’s debatable whether the class is even necessary at this point.
I do believe that a new game mode would add variety to the number of viable builds. Conquest by it’s very nature is designed for the bunker metagame. This metagame requires people to fill very specific and formulaic roles. Where the warrior excels is in the variety of builds that it supports. Whether that will prove to be a strength in another game mode remains to be seen. Conquest is definitely no fun if you’re a warrior though.

I tried being unique, making my own builds and refusing 100b for the longest time. Sadly everytime I faced a team with half a brain cell my builds would get shut down in some way to where they had become seemingly useless. I had to pug tourneys for a long time and every group I entered expected me to be instagib 100b, as if there was no other alternative, and there really isn’t if you want to play against good teams. I refuse to play any other class, I love being a warrior, so for now I grit my teeth and force myself to play the only build that seems to have any measure of success.
Every patch I keep promising myself that A-net will eventually go over our other weapons (everything other than the GS – axe/shield meta) and give them some love and some tweaks to make them more viable, but they haven’t yet and it’s getting pretty frustrating.

Exactly this. I’ve been trying to carve out a niche with other weapon sets in futility. Eventually I also caved and converted to a generic GS warrior as I had no other choice. So now I split my time between a generic DPS warrior and a generic bunker guardian. Fun!
At least the guardian has some (very small) level of flexibility (a few weapon combinations are viable), the warrior literally just has one build.
When I first played the warrior in BWE3 I thought it would be the most versatile profession in the game which is why I picked it for my main.

you guys aren’t the only class that feels pidgeonholed… I wish they would buff warriors other weapon skills cuz I hate dying to 100b. I play a mesmer… We have a long list of buggy traits. Traits that should reduce cooldown and increase power but they decrease power… In pvp I feel like I have to have portal and time warp to be viable but for my team… Which forces me to give up slots I would rather use for something else… The game does need work but it’s not worth quitting over.. Best part about quitting though… YOu can come back whenever you want and not pay again.
The game has variety, but as you said certain professions such as the warriors are pretty limited and they don’t bring much to the table which is why I switch to a thief especially if its pvp involved. I got the patience to wait because this game isn’t going anywhere, but I know what you mean about the frustration part about warriors potential in this game. I play a condition warrior hardcore because that type of warrior build appeals to me than the normal cookie cutter greatsword with axe /shield combo. I get a lot of trash talk mocking when I play on my warrior especially playing as a condition spec than I get on my thief.
I know one reason is because a lot of good pvp players know how to counter warriors and they always mark them first to get the easy meat bags out of the way.
The other reason I get trash talk is due to my cousin trash talking back when playing on my warrior giving her a bad rep…meh.
i played a necromancer and for what its worth i dont logon anymore now for 6 weeks and counting. feel cheated in a way for a game thats supposed to be all that.. and didnt come through but ah well what can you do.. ?
Even though it would cause balance problems at this stage I feel tiered traits need to go. It is killing build diversity I need access to 2nd tier traits in the 1st tier spot etc to make different builds optimal. I don’t understand why there isn’t more community outcry for seeing tiered traits go the way of the dodo? Would it make some super builds sure but then you could balance from a more varied playing field.

I don’t think they need to go completely because part of the “balancing” is player choice… and the tier traits add to it. I do however think that some need moved around.
What’s Sad is warrior really should be the benchmark class. They should be the class all other classes are balanced around.
Warriors should have that perfect base balance between survivability and damage that allows them to move a bit in either direction as the player wishes with out losing viability. This as the OP stated is not the case.. They have a chose between glass cannon 100B build or shout healing bunker.
This is the same with almost every class. Instead of being able to start out at a base balanced state and pick traits based on play style players must use build A, B or C (many not having a build C… And some not having a build B either) to be able to be successful.
If warriors are seen as the balance point you can adjust the base damage and survivability of each class very easily, but first and foremost the warrior class must be balanced. I think Anet could do this, but the real question is will they.
DB Night Crew
I feel the same way. Warriors feel like they’re trying to compete with all the other classes for a role, but they just can’t do any of them better.
I think other classes need help too though.
Guardians could use more viable support builds. Keeping others alive with a guardian is worth a whole lot less than keeping yourself alive at the moment, which I think is absolutely backwards. What is a GUARDIAN guarding? Answer: themselves.
Necros pretty much never give up their staff and off-hand dagger.
Most of the other classes have a little more flexibility(not much more)
Might as well bail and pull the trigger now dude instead of dragging it out.
I’ve lost total faith that they’ll do anything worthwhile to PVP soon. Maybe in like a year or something.
I love how their play how you want talk, in reality was just play this one build or be useless to your team.
This is the exact reason I find it hard to even bother logging onto my Warrior sometimes even though it’s the only class I enjoy. I’ve had to reroll Ele for now until Warrior become viable for tPvP really.
http://www.youtube.com/user/CantStopTheChopPvP
Part of the staleness comes from conquest being the only game mode. I remember reading somewhere this summer how Anet didn’t want defence to dominate in this game, yet the only game mode in the game is the one most conducive to defensive specs.
Some professions, like the warrior, definitely need to be buffed/re-worked, but I can’t help but feel that some specs would be more viable in a different game mode (which requires different roles than conquest).
(edited by Chi Malady.2015)
Conquest promotes cautious, defensive play in order to win.
This promotes the bunker build as the most effective use of a single player when your aim is to simply hold 2/3 capture points for as long as possible.
Bunker builds are boring to play as, and boring to play against.
But they are everywhere, and they cause a disproportionate shift in players when they can hold a 1v1 eternally and force a 2v1 or more to effectively get them off a capture point in a reasonable amount of time.
To the OP, thank you for being clear about your problem.
My view is that there’s lots of potential to get to a solution for you… Guild Wars 2 just isn’t there yet. The conquest mode as the main spvp game choice is already straining to keep us entertained with its 3-node plus side objectives format. A competing MMO implements more variety in its spvp modes with 10 or more people, and conquest variety such as 5 nodes to capture. The competition offers more roaming required by each team, and roles for bunkering, burst, attrition and support-based characters. Its not perfect, but it has had a long time to develop some variety. In Guild Wars 2, if additional modes are implemented, such as a 3v3 or 4v4 arena, or 5-point conquest, or a capture the flag, then you may get more mileage out of your shelved Warrior.
So, I think there isn’t a lot of build variety at the moment because there isn’t a lot of gameplay variety at the moment. Hopefully there will be before this game reaches its first birthday.
…Why didn’t you just switch to another class for awhile?
Well I don’t know what the OP’s reasons are but for me personally I like playing warrior, in every game I’ve played I always pick the warrior archtype. I hate ranged classes and I despise caster classes of any kind, I don’t like stealth, and guardians just aren’t for me. I only want to play warrior, so for now I’ll suffer through my one build meta in hopes that things improve.
…Why didn’t you just switch to another class for awhile?
He gets a challenge out of the warrior profession than the others. Sometimes playing the underdog isn’t bad at all even if the odds are against us.

They all suffer from a similar problem. The current metagame limits everyone.

Eles can be bursty d/d, s/d, support d/d, tanky s/d, or tanky staff.
Guardians can be bunker, or offensive. There are many different variations to each.
Thiefs are pretty much limited to backstab. Rangers are pretty much limited to traps. Mesmers are pretty much limited to shatter. So yeah, you’re right about those.
But yeah, the amount of competitive builds for each class isn’t that great for some classes. I think you need to be realistic about balance. If you look at WoW, you’re basically limited to 1 or 2 specs in PvP per class. The variation isn’t there.
There is so much potential for this game, just relax. The game is still relatively new, and the foundation is amazing. They’re working on it, be patient!
I should also say that just because something isn’t considered to be good doesn’t make it bad. For example, d/d eles and rangers were considered bad before people figured them out.

Street Fighter 3: 3rd Strike managed to be fun, interesting and competitively viable for 10+ years with only one game mode and 4 viable top-tier characters.
If the basic gameplay is good, then variety is just icing on the cake. If the basic gameplay isnt good, then no amount of variety will save it.
Before adding game modes or other stuff, ANet needs to fix what’s available right now.
well since every team has condi removal necros has 1 or 2 builds but they can do something every 45s when wells are off cds
I appreciate everyone coming in here and being civil regarding the topic. I know that around these parts things can easily get derailed and lose sight of the original discussion.
@Gleedwoody “…Why didn’t you just switch to another class for awhile?”
I have played every class, but the only one that is enjoyable to me is the Warrior.
I have put considerable time into the class, when I quit 2 1/2 months ago I was r42.
Essentially, it’s my baby. Just because my baby can’t swim right now doesn’t mean I won’t stop trying to teach it.
Barrier of entry in this game is extremely high. Not in a skill way or even learning your class, but in the ability to break into the PvP community. It drives hoards of new players to WvW and leaves us wanting.
Due to this oversight the sPvP community has an high turnover rate – resulting in little community growth and the oversight from other business’s / communities to take us seriously.

Folly, in WoW classes had a very different build system, lot less weapon variety, and were balanced around 30 skills used all at once.
GW2 build system is based around diversification ( 5 traitlines are huge), any weapon gives you different skills from the other, and all classes are balanced around +-20 skills.
Given this, it’s ridicolous to have so few good builds for some classes when there’s so much customization and when the output ( weapon sets) are so different.
Their balance phylosophy is broken from the start : if they were thinking at tht thief (for istance) as they burst master, there was no need to have all those sets ( like P/P, S/D, P/D etc) that have no burst, because if the thief is balanced around burst, thoe sets will always be uneffective in competitive play.
their starting idea ( bring the player, not the class) is contradicting with their own balance phylosophy.
it makes no sense, and players are totally right in whining about class balance.
because the game can’t be balanced around 1-2 builds per class in a game like this, really.
Explain something to me.
In a game where you can pick any class and play it, why do you only limit yourself to one class? It makes little sense to me. Picking up a new class isn’t hard. The only difficult is learning what to do in certain situations, but you also pick that up from just playing the game anyways and talking to friends about what they do.
Don’t know how you could ever consider yourself playing on the “pro” level if you can’t multi-class all 8 classes.
So please, help me understand. Why do players like yourself only play one class.
^
Do you honestly try to “enjoy” all subjects at school? Normally you’d only enjoy one or a selected few. I’m being too broad when I say this but its related to that type of psychology.
I thought we were supposed to have options from watching hours of developer interviews before the game came out.
I’m a bit disappointed that there’s no attempt to give any class the capacity to do more than 1-2 roles remotely competitively in PvP. Some trait lines just exist to troll new players, because no competitive player can possibly justify some build choices.
The same applies to some weapon choices, even if a player traits and chooses stats (gear) to compliment their build. The game just isn’t balanced to make some options feasible, ever. Now it’s been openly stated that it won’t be.
I understand that it’d be difficult, but I expected a tour-de-force from all that had been said, or at least a real attempt. Obviously balance with so many factors and builds is difficult, but I think that never having tried is a waste.
The game combat is fun, and the mechanics to give players actual options for builds (trait lines, weapon options, stat (gear) options) are there. But no attempt to balance any class for more than one or possibly two roles has ever been made. Other builds are intentionally left weak so balancing them is irrelevant because they’re not remotely competitive.

it doesn’t work like this.
I’ve tried all classes, i just can’t go over my thief and sometime, my necro.
I was a very good D/D ele, i had lot of succes in tourneys with my mesmer, i found the triple meditation guardian fun , but i always come back to thief and necro, that are actually quite pigeon holed into a couple of builds ( maybe the necro is a bit better).
I once used to play S/D with my thief, it was the best experience i had in this game: positioning was needed, i had to use all my skills in order to succed ( unlike D/D one shot for glory) , it wasn’t gimmicky, it required skill to be played.
The aNet nerfed the kitten out of it, with no real reason ( mostly because they were not able to make daze duration rounding right) and nerfed OH dagger in order to nerf burst ( and they only ruined balanced/control build like S/D and D/P).
Now i’m forced to go glass cannon in order to be useful in my team: my choice is restricted to a single build with little to no variation.
If you’re fine to think " if you want to play balanced, then just go D/D ele", i’m not.
I want build variety, for MY favourite class, not a random class.
all classes have the same problem…
if think about my ele its all about 0/10/0/30/30 or 0/10/10/20/30
same with my thief
with the trait changes in BWE3 they sadly cut away many builds and therefore the variety

The difference is that you can run with different weapon sets with the ele, different amulets, so changing the playstyle.
You can go with zerker/valky/cleric and play bunker or roamer or burst.
You can play shaman ( not a common choice but still viable) and play condi/semi bunker.
you can choose playing between D/D, S/D or staff ( only the focus is not THAT viable, simply because obsidian flash doesn’t prevent capping, otherwise swirling wind is alone worth the weapon).
This is not valid for the thief, nor for the ranger, nor for the necro, nor for the warrior, nor for the mesmer.
Funny isn’t it ?
WoW was pretty much the same way. You were pigeonholed into 1 or 2 builds for pvp with only a slight variation to the cookie cutter builds based on player preference. What was really amazing was Rift’s class build diversity. Only four classes to choose from but tons of builds. Could make a Mage and play as a straight healer, support heal damage, aoe warlock, condition lock, necro minion build, pyro burst, confusion control cc builds or any combination of them. Plus you could have 5 builds available at the same time to switch between.
The thing with MMOs is that everyone expects “balance” to mean “any class played well should be able to beat any other class in 1v1”. It doesn’t. This is a multiplayer game. If you’re a glass cannon thief and you’re having trouble beating a bunker on a point, ask for help. As a necro with cc chains and multiple boon conversions to corruptions I eat bunkers alive. But the glass cannon thieves give me trouble. What’s hard for you is easy for someone else and vice versa. I think with the exception of a few currently broken mechanics the game feels pretty balanced, just redundant.
ANet seems like they’re going to gradually work through the kinks. Until then it’s on the players to figure out their own balance. I’ve never played an MMO with such little communication in spvp. You can play for days without seeing ANY dialogue between players. It feels barren. No one calls out incomings. No one organizes attacks. You just basically follow around the group and move in a circle as needed. I think if people talked more there’d be less crying on the forums because things would have more synergy.

this is not WoW.
I’ve already posted the differences between those games, and GW2 by far offers thousand times better flexibility on customization and less variables to balance.
It can be clearly seen on some classes, like ele, guard and enge, having various builds performing well in every aspect ( may them fit the meta or not, may people BELIEVE they don’t fit the meta or not), while other classes simply have no possibility into customization without losing TOO MUCH effectiveness ( thief, necro, ranger, warrior, mesmer).
This is exclusively aNet fault, and if you followed this game from the start, you would know they introduced current trait system something like 6 months before launch, completely overhauling antecedent balance.
Basically, this game balance is kitten.

Sigh.
Rangers are pretty much limited to traps.
False. I run a sword/dagger regen/evade spec in tpvp and Wv3- don’t need no stinkin traps.
Once you start running, you get the shortbow up the rear.

Eh. Think of it like this. Being a traps ranger you have the ability to lay down multiple combo fields and damage foes who attempt to stay on the point. This allows for better group fights and 1v1. And yes, it even comes with a load of combo finishers. In WvWvW I can see why you wouldn’t use a traps ranger. But I’m pretty sure this post is mainly focused on tpvp.
There are a vast variety of builds that are viable in tPvP, even paids – stop whining and try something new.
The meta somewhat limits classes. But ive seen Elementalists play roam dps well.
Dagger/pistol isnt uncommon in thiefs.
Mesmers, do overwhelming tend to be shatter, but u could probably play a bunker mesmer if u wanted to.
Guardian really does seem somewhat limited to bunker, unforrunately they dont do good cond damage, and dont roam well. But you COULD play a dps guardian, just wouldnt be ideal.
Trap ranger is usually the way to go.
Engineer can be played power/condition or bunker, all reasonably viable. Though, on the whole this class is perhaps a wee tad bit subpar.
necro tends to be condition but u can make a decent power necro. Ive even seen pretty good bunker necros.
I would say we dont truly know what game balance is, because we dont have an elo to show if certain classses are consistantly way overepresented at the top.
But im going out on a limb to say guardian bunker shows up, but nobody really complains about it, because they dont die to it
I saw Defektive.
Then I thought of that “Captain Hammer” build.
And then the “Mr. Freeze” build.
I tried both, and it felt so much fun to try something made out of the usual routine even though I felt much weaker then the builds that work.
I’ve tried my own kinds of builds. Confusion bunker Mesmer, Phantomtank Mesmer, Axemancer stacking bleed..It is quite fun to do it but at the same time I feel like I’m not playing seriously since I’m not using what works/
I am trying to find an outside build that does work out for me though. It’d take a while for me to come up with something.

Imo reverse CTF would fix this whole game.
To pick up the flag you have to channel for 3 seconds.
Person with the flag has no attacks besides flag ones which may just be like, aoe cripples etc. Can’t use portal or swiftness etc.
Bunkers protect flag.
Roamers escort flag / carry flag.

Imo reverse CTF would fix this whole game.
To pick up the flag you have to channel for 3 seconds.
Person with the flag has no attack besides flag ones which may just be like, aoe cripples etc.
Bunkers protect flag.
Roamers escort flag / carry flag.
I don’t see how that would be any better than conquest. It would just be zerg the flag carrier, and peel for the flag carrier.
Conquest with these secondary objectives provides a lot of depth to the game that hasn’t been explored yet. The community is fairly small so most people are in the mindset that you are “required” to have different classes/builds, or run certain strats.
But now they’re hating cause a brotha finally got some buzz

Defektivex, i agree 100%.
Nerf bunkers and add team death match (3 v 3, 5 v 5)

Simply stated, if they aren’t going to make big changes to the classes themselves, then new gametypes are needed, on a random rotation for tPvP.
Map 1 could be standard conquest,
Map 2 CTF
Map 3 Assassinate the preferred target aka, kill the main chosen enemy and you get a point. 5 points to a win.
Force people to pick builds that compliment a number of scenarios rather than a set map rotation.
Then don’t allow them to changes traits between matches. Now suddenly when one team innovates in one of the three areas, other teams have to change accordingly.
etc.

No offense, but that’s a terrible idea. You should be able to change comps between different maps, let alone different game modes.
Having different game modes also makes balancing a lot harder.

There are a vast variety of builds that are viable in tPvP, even paids – stop whining and try something new.
Not really and it’s not whining at all. It’s pretty much the truth that there isn’t much variety of builds that can’t do well play in pvp overall. Unless you can prove it in every paid tournament you do while recording it. If you can’t do that than your statement here is pretty much useless and in everything you’re just telling us shut up.

while i’ll agree with you that having different game modes in a rotating manner, within one tpvp matchup doesn’t sound good, I disagree about implementing new game modes.
Honestly what’s the harm it will do? You say make balancing harder but in what way?
The worst it will do is bring complaints about why it’s not that fun. From there, Anet can just temporarily disable that game mode.
You can’t be so quick to make assumptions without experiencing something to come to a solid conclusion.
