THIS IS NOT ANOTHER DUEL THREAD.

So I was reminiscing about my world pvp days in WoW and came up with an idea of how that could be implemented in GW2. With the megaserver already in place this could be easily done by giving players a choice of going to a pvp or non-pvp version of any of the world maps whenever they waypoint there and players are split by current WvW color.

Imagine if your doing your guild quests and you decide to enter a pvp zone! Map completes would be a million times more fun to me if this was in the game. Anyone else want this feature?

I think hes refering to duels. But putting it another way so that it wont get ignored and not be referred to the hundreds of other dueling threads, which is a discussion I gave up on a long time ago.

Not a fan. Not because I would be on such a mega-server, but because no self-respecting game company would implement open world PvP in a game milieu in which it would not make sense. GW2 has built a world environment in which the five races are allied against the forces of the Dragons. While anyone can have differences with anyone else a general free-for-all would not make sense. There are plenty of games that offer that.

The game was not designed for PvP like you are asking for. A.Net has already stated that. This game is not what you want, move on.

When was this… oh! July 2012? You mean a year and a half before the megaserver was implemented?! I think most of that “prohibitive amount of work” is done. I’m willing to bet that whats preventing us from being able to fight one another in a PvE zone vs a WvW zone is 1 simple boolean variable labeled, PvP Enabled: True/False whenever we switch zones.

I like open world pvp too. I think it would make the world even more dynamic and add another layer of game play, for instance one has to look over one’s shoulders when doing a mission.

But by default, everyone should start with a pvE mode unless otherwise changed. For those who want to pvP on a pvE map, they have to switch to pvP mode. Even then they can only engage other players who is also on pvP mode (that would avoid, for example, the problem of vista or resouce camping if one just switch back to the pvE mode).

That is the simpliest way to do it.

The game does not design to have an open world pvp in mind outside the mist. So in order to have a more complex setup of a open world pvp in the current pvE areas, much need to be added or changed.

For instance, pvP mode enabled players can side with enemy NPCs to defeat other players and gain favour from those NPCs. But in order to be consistant with one’s personal story, this sort of things have to be done after one completes his/her personal story (and then may be a cross over story to switch side?). By then, I suppose, say, a Sylvari can choose to side with the Nightmare court; Charr, the Flame Legion; Asura, Inquest; etc.. That would open up another area of end-game game play.

But much need to be added in order to support that. I would very very very much LOVE to see it happen though.

This is a good point, tags would have a questionable place in this sort of open world pvp system but would still be needed for guild quests etc.

We have open world PvP in this game, it is called the Mists. The PvE area is for coop play, There are no Factions in this game and since there already is a PvP area in this game, there will be no PvP anywhere in the game, except the mists, since it was not designed to have it any where else.

I honestly wouldn’t mind it as long as players can opt out. I think having a PvP and non-PvP version of the same map would run counter to ANet’s goals with the Megaserver though, which is to get as many people onto the same map as possible.

Could see something like this if they bring Cantha back and have factions again. Also they could do something like Wildstar did with open world duels where once someone gets to like 2% HP it ends the fight so it is just like you are sparring and not killing your friends. I would prefer a set area though like the queens gauntlet that could offer duels as a mini game almost.

I don’t think I’ll ever play on such a server so if this is ever implemented, make sure it’s disabled by default. And more importantly, no “better loot” or “PVP only loot” in PVP server to “encourage” people to play in them. Quite frankly, I think PVP maps will most likely hold a handful of thieves stealthed at strategic locations waiting for some poor sod to pass.

Mist maps have vistas and events already.
What’s the difference?

You just want to gank a lone quest runner with your friends.
That’s the point, right?
But, no. you can’t.
Because quest runners can choose PVE versions of maps.
You will face same guys such as yourself.
Then, it’s same to WvW.

What GW2 lacks is 1vs1 dueling.
But open world PvP is redundant as long as it has WvW.
Open world PvP is an out-of-date format.
It ruined some MMOs because it repelled newbies.
Nowadays, other MMOs introduced PVE servers and they are preferred to PVP ones.
No one want to be ganked while they are running quests and unprepared.

Correct. I don’t understand how people are getting mad about this if you can opt out. Do you feel like your missing out on the party if you choose not to be in a PvP version of the zone?

Ganking would be a potential but not as bad as a game like WoW b/c of the downleveling system. I do see ganking at wp’s as an issue though and some sort of nuetral zones would have to be worked out but then again there is three different colored teams. The likelihood of one color dominating the exact same instance of a map at all 20 or so waypoints seems slim.

The only valid argument I can see against this from Anet’s perspective is the health of the WvW map populations if Owpvp was put into place. Would they tank or remain the same?

Keep in mind the main reason I’m suggesting this is because megaserver exists now and there is likely only a simple boolean flag standing in the way of us being able to PvP in PvE zones right now. If megaserver wasn’t around it would certainly be a great deal of work to figure out technically.

How? Keep it the same as it is right now. If you kill a few things then you have essentially ‘tagged’ the event and will get appropriate credit regardless of whether or not you are in the presence of the quest when it completes. Someone killed you in the middle of completing an event? No problem, you rez at a different waypoint, your killer finishes the quest and voila you still get your gold contribution rewards for it.

Events should just ignore faction differences and continue operating the way they are right now.

There will be no ganking if one chooses to opt out. For that he can go on his merry way while others choose to opt into pvP can do whatever the killings they want without interferring those opt-outs.

Again, no seperated server; just an on/off switch to alter one’s game preferences. Those remain on the pvE mode will be just as usual; whereas those switch to pvP, they can hit mobs and other pvP enabled players leaving those pvE players unharm.

That is, the pvEers will see the open world as it is now; nothing will change for them from their points of view. For the pvPers, they will see the pvEers as it is now – i.e. non-damageable entities; but they will see other pvPers as a tagetable entities, like mobs. That is all.

See, no ganking and no camping, unless one chooses to opt-in for pvP; then that is his problem.

I say why not! Make the most of the map. Add another layer of game play. And if I suggestion is to be taken (see my earlier post), there will be another area of end-game game play too.

Yes… this is my second time ever making a thread here and it is absolutely amazing how many people will jump in and post without even reading one sentence of what I’ve said and just go off the title alone.

Basically there are 2 ways it could be implemented:

1) You check or uncheck a box in your map screen that says PVP and whenever you use a waypoint you are placed in an instance of that zone according to which type you want still abiding by all the current megaserver stuff just ppl are able to attack based on WvW color.
2) At any point while you are in a zone you can check or uncheck a PvP flag which would allow the aggressive ‘PvPers’ to be mixed in the same zone as the passive ‘PvEers’ just those without the flag on would be immune to any player damage.

I think option 1 would be best because if this thread alone is any proof of the attitudes of the community, the PvEers would be outraged at the notion of even seeing so much as one asura getting knocked off of a vista by some asura engi hiding in the bushes because it doesn’t fit the ‘lore’ of everyone holding hands and working together to fight dragons. (and yet places like heart of the mists, EOTM and WvW still exists..)

I’m sure it could be fit in somehow but this really draws the line for part of the community apparently.

So let me take a pot shot at what is really going on. You enjoyed gearing up fast in WvWvW and having an advantage over lots of lower level/geared players. Now time has passed and more often than not people have about the same gear level. You still get the odd low level player but for the most part its high level players with good or better gear on. No more ganky videos being made for youtube that call themselves PVP when its really gear vs gear.

So now, what you want, its to open the whole game up to abuse. Thats all it is, no reason to pretend otherwise. Like some have said, sitting on vista points, waiting to jump someone. Yeah, I someone wasnt expecting you to run around in the open looking for an equal fight, nope, wanting to jump low level players again.

Why not come into proper PVP, we all have the same gear and everything, nice and fair like.

Wrong, 75% of the time I play this game I’m playing SPvP. I want a feature like this b/c as someone stated above if such a feature did exist maybe map completes wouldn’t be such a bore… the second or third time around. First time working for world complete is breathtakingly awesome.

The world maps in GW2 are beautiful and I would love to do my favorite activity (PvP) in the snow of Frostgorge or tropical islands of Southsea or in the volcano of Mount Maelstrom. There would be this extra incentive and feeling of purpose for roaming around the amazing PvE maps that Anet put so much time and effort into making. After hitting 80 ppl only see about 2% of these maps on a regular basis because of a handful of world bosses.

Remember it would be OPTIONAL.

Edit: Just read the message that my thread was moved to the SPvP section… smh I don’t think it belongs here. Do you think something like this would kill the SPvP population as well as the WvW population?

Here is a good example. I was showing some friends obsidian sanctum for the first time the other day while playing my ranger. I spotted some fool from another server ahead of us and used my longbow knockback to decimate his progress in the puzzle hahaa. Maybe if he’d been more aware of his surroundings he could have popped some stability but players in this game aren’t used to watching their back while doing solo PvE content.

There should be an option to duel anywhere outside cities, but disabled by default, and without finishing off.

When I migrated from WoW I didn’t like lack of proper dueling either. There are so many beautiful places in Tyria to set up a duel or even a tournament, why make it impossible? Honestly, no need for any rewards or achievements, just give it to players and I guarantee there will be plenty of videos on youtube about epic duels.

For me it’s nothing to do with the possibility of ganking – in fact if there was the option to flag yourself for pvp or remain in a pve instance, it would not be an issue anyway.

Instead the main reason is simple – variety in scenery – getting to pvp in the amazing pve landscapes.

EotM did that right – gave us some new scenery and environment to pvp in. The normal wvw maps are very plain and people can eventually become a little tired of them. I won’t even get into the spvp maps which are incredibly repetitive for the time you can spend playing.

But imagine if you could pvp in places like Caledon Forest or Iron Marches – would really make things interesting and more enjoyable.

In cities you could have duelling instead – again with the option of either remaining in an instance where you could be invited to duel, or in an instance where it is completely disabled.

With megaservers and instancing, this could be easier to do (separate pve and pvp players in pve maps, so everyone is free to do what they like), but that’s just me guessing – of course I have no idea in practice how easy or difficult any of this is to do.

It should definitely be an option to think about though, not dismissed without thought. Would be better than most of the fluff that gets added to the game.

Edit: It would also encourage end game players (max level, no reason to do open world pve) to roam around the open world pve maps. At the moment I’d say most pve players either congregate around dungeons/fractals, or farming trains – I’d say most people who freely roam around open world would be roleplayers.

That is a waste of every single pve map, each of which has been so well crafted – instead at the end game we all gravitate around a few dull maps, leaving all the beautiful stuff behind…

There should just be one large Arena somewhere for duels. May work best with some kind of entry barrier, so people won’t bother non-gladiators. Perhaps a quest scaled to your level.

A factions based war in the PvE maps would be cool, but similar to WvW. ArenaNet would never do it. Maybe they come up with something else involving factions though, I hope they do.

So now, what you want, its to open the whole game up to abuse. Thats all it is, no reason to pretend otherwise. Like some have said, sitting on vista points, waiting to jump someone. Yeah, I someone wasnt expecting you to run around in the open looking for an equal fight, nope, wanting to jump low level players again.

Why not come into proper PVP, we all have the same gear and everything, nice and fair like.

honestly i prefer how it is now, WvW is the open world pvp,
and PVEers can kinda duel already since you can now join pvp matches from anywhere, just both join the same empty server, fight and leave when you’re bored and you’ll be right back where you were

They should open new server with open PvP.

As was stated before, the game WAS NOT designed for Open World PvP – period. It was meant as PvE coop. The Mists was designed as the PvP area. Many of the game designers have stated this very bluntly. To add Open PvP the whole game would have to be redesigned and you would probably lose Ascended and legendary times also – to make it fair. This game will NEVER HAVE OPEN WORLD PvP ON THE PvE MAPS. Same with dueling.

You want open world PvP go to ArcheAge, Rift, TERA – you can get all the ganking you want in.

The developers have “explained” WvW. WvW takes place in the Mists, not in the World. Invaders and Defenders are from different versions of Tyria — the old parallel worlds thing. Edge of the Mists is, similarly, in the Mists. Buy it or not, that is the “lore” reason for WvW PvP combat. If you want to lol about lore arguments, understand the lore first.

Besides, I said nothing about my reactions to lore. My objections to PvP in the PvE environment do not stem from lore reasons.

What I said was:

… because no self-respecting game company would implement open world PvP in a game milieu in which it would not make sense. GW2 has built a world environment in which the five races are allied against the forces of the Dragons.

My objection is that the developers would not want to just slap on an “enable PvP” mechanic and call it a done deal. If they decided to implement persistent world PvP, they’d put development time into explaining it, requiring rework of the game’s premises and some degree of rework — potentially extensive — on how the PvE game works. At that point your selfish desires for persistent world PvP are competing with my selfish desires that those resources be put into game updates I care about. Sorry, but that’s the way of the world.
