The new blog post has an interesting section on spending gold and glory to buy leveling tomes.

I’m taking this to mean that the glory vendor will sell these tomes for some combination of gold AND glory, and it won’t be simply gold-to-level?

I have no idea why they’re implementing this if they plan on removing glory all together.

You already can spend gold to level up – you buy materials and level by crafting. One crafting profession gets you 10 levels so if you go through all 8 you can get to level 80.

It’s a PvP exclusive currency, kind of like gold but only earned and spent in PvP.

Buying Tomes would be more direct, and is actually something that I would do for my Alts, at least to a point where there’s less pain in the levelling curve.

Like that Mesmer for example!

The only problem is that it would seem to be a short term thing for getting these tomes with gold and glory since they also plan to retire glory once ladders have been implemented.

I guess if this happens there is the possibility of us just buying these tomes in pvp with just gold which would just be buying our way to 80….

Because there are literally people with hundreds of thousands of glory sitting in their account right now. The new vendor will probably be both a glory sink as well as a way to tune rewards PvP primary players will be using their new gold income on.
