Q:

Why is there a frame of immunity while a player goes down, especially in structured PvP?

By grace period, I am talking about this invulnerability frame when someone goes down. It seems to be very helpful when it comes to rezzing back your allies, but very frustrating when it comes to cleaving the downed.

Also, the question could expand to, “Why are the condition cleansed when someone goes down?”

Because the downed state was created to be the greatest crutch in this game.

Now don’t speak ill of it or you will have a bandwagon full of pvps stating it’s “skillful play”
when in reality it was created to fight high burst spec’s. Arena net nerfed most of those builds but refuse to tweak the crutch state. this is the main reason you only seen zerk thieves for the last few meta’s. It is also why the abujured can 3 cap most of there games (not that they need it)

Just be thankful most people haven’t realize how stuipid quickness + rez is atm, when they do…

I don’t necessarily dislike Downstate. I am just very skeptic about the necessity of Mercy Runes and all the gimmicks that are done around Downstate.

Without it, it’d make even attempting to rezz anyone almost pointless(especially in the middle of a group fight). Can’t really say its a crutch when literally every player has access to it whether they like it or not and all teams can abuse it regardless of builds, class or gear. It is part of the game so I guess it’d be best to just adapt to it since I doubt it’s going anywhere.

You can still focus the rezzers though obviously, which is arguably better. You could focus the downed person and potentially kill them without a stomp, leaving the rest of their teammates still fighting, or you focus the rezzer and end up with 2 people downed and make it very unlikely either will get back up.

I’d also suspect it was mostly with PvE in mind to prevent you from getting downed then instantly killed by the same AoE, especially since rezzing a fully dead person takes forever, even out of combat.

While every profession does have access to it it still gives an advanatage towards bruiser/bunker comps, which already have an advantage due to the conquest game mode. a squishy mesmer is still squishy with double the life. now compare that to say a guardian who has higher base defense.

On some builds it’s pointless to “Burst them down” since they are gaining more life from being rez’d then you can cleave. and interupts themselfs are almost pointless unless you have another teammate preforming a stomp.

don’t you want more build diversity then the 4-5 spec’s that can abuse it now?

The mechanic isn’t really bad (it’s based of the old d&D games). It needs to be toned downed.

I would rather see rez be extremly slow with reduced cool downs on banners/signet/ect then the fast paced rez’s we have now.

Grace Period is AFAIK so you don’t instantly use your #2 downed skill when mashing the 2 button while still alive but dying.

Everyone going in downstate so it gives no unfair advantage to a specific class or player, but it is something abuseable in PvP.
How? GW2 Wiki:

Revived targets get back with 50% of their >>>maximum<<< health and become invulnerable for one second.

It worth to not to dodge / cleanse when you have too less hp and no healing cooldown left, you get 50% of your >>>maximum<<< health back in 2 second and all condi removed if you run and die next to your team mate.

If they lower your HP to maximum 5-10% after res, things may change.

(Rune of Mercy is just ridiculous if I get ressed with 30k HP it worth more than 4 of my strongest self heal skill with 25 sec cooldown)

Would be nice to know why but I have a feeling it’s partly to prevent all these one shot AoE things killing you instantly in PvE…except it doesn’t on fractal 50 lol.

Maybe it’s just a system thing where there’s no way to get rid of it without breaking everything including access to guild banks or something silly.

One thing I would like to see is a standardisation of downed state health and armour. As someone said, you get a zerk character down and they can be dead before a Rez is even possible, conversely you get bunkers who can face tank 100b zerk warrior and still have enough health to be rezzed without a sweat.

They need to add the pve downstate penalty in pvp. Simple as that.

Thanks. I think that it is a very important discussion to have. It’s interesting because it does not have much to do with Class Balance per se.

Those unneeded downed helping mechanics are something I am pretty sure we tend to forget. For instance, the rez when killing a guard in Foefire had been removed in a very recent patch. That fix was a good one. The health reduction on the downed was appreciated too, but it’s still unclear how it helped against rezzing back-to-back allies.

if someone gets downed repeatedly a few times within a minute they should be defeated on the 4th down.
