Guardian vs Thief
The one that is most skilled. No other factors involved, on your example.
I’ve seen a thief like shadow step, and in two hits take down like fully leveled 80’s, it seems to be that thief are very agile and well use cloaking. When watching multiple fights with a thief it seemed that the only race and profession that was near balanced was another thief???
Guardian wisely asks his Ranger buddy to toss out a ‘Sic Em’ and makes quick work of the hated thief.
The “same build” thing is rather confusing assuming they are two completely different classes and both have a few viable Berserker amulet variations for a conquest setup.
If both are playing a conquest match and use conquest meta-ish builds, a 1vs1 fight on some lone point will usually favor guardian by A LOT (the thief can easily avoid that situation though).
For a different situation, I guess we would need a more precise description.
no hate, just watching the moves of a thief in a fight. How can such agility, speed, cloak, plus two dodges I believe to be impractical, and over two or three years since launch to be unbalanced. They have all that… and can like one hit people if they get behind them… or at their side… come now…. :s
The guard should win. Or the thief does the smart thing and runs away to be useful elsewhere.
guardians have alot of innate low cd aoe + burn + some blocking and some cc which are some of the things thieves hate because it can hit them more often whenever they go near. this is as long as the guardian isn’t exactly quaggan quality or squishy as the salty trolls in this forum.
o wait…quaggans r op.
Guardian – if both are at the same “skill level” in a DUELING scenario.
All other scenarios, well, whoever got the upper-hand on whom first.

Oh another thing to note, unless you’re pro and participate in tournies, generally classes wont really matter for you since there will be people both below and above your skill. Hell there was a post back, in WvW, where 1 thief killed a group of 4 (guardian and warrior including if I recall) – really hard to say if the thief was skilled, or if the 4 just sucked badly.

It’s a simple fact that a Guardian against a Thief, both of equal skill, the Guardian will always win.
Edit: It’s not completely 1-sided either. It’s usually pretty close.
Guardian should always win easily.
Guardian should always win.
Guardian mostly hard-counters Thief.

This game isnt balanced around pure 1v1’s. That’s the beauty of it.
You don’t judge a profession off of it’s ability to 1v1. A Guardian brings things to the table a thief doesn’t, but same goes for the thief. They both have burst damage, but the guardian has more cc/support and is a fat potato, whereas the thief is quick around the map to help his teammates, to 2v1 someone or stealth them out of a outnumbered situation.
You can’t just say “Guard or Thief, choose now” because they both offer different things in the pvp scene. Most top teams currently have guardian AND thief. If you don’t care for actual game balance and only about 1v1’s, then youre in the wrong place
Another example was the newly formed oRNG, where they had 2 dps guardians and no thief. Sure it worked, but what works better? Guardian + Thief, which is what theyre running now
Personally I don’t think thieves should be having too much trouble with the meta dps guardian build (Hammer,Scepter/focus) for much longer. It’s 10x easier to deal with than greatsword,sword/focus dps guardians. Thieves just haven’t been given the time to adapt their playstyle. You don’t run into a dps guardian like that. Use what you have and he doesnt. Just ask the person in that thief video you linked
guard wins 90%+ but not 100%
now let’s look at guard vs ele
ele wins 100% … 100%… 100%… literally will not drop 1 duel in 5000 duels unless they go afk.
yeah some matchups are unbalanced but this isnt even the worst one.
Thieves just haven’t been given the time to adapt their playstyle.
Yea, i get you been 3years. wonder how much time they need, still.

Make sense, i’ll give you that.
Just ask the person in that thief video you linked
And please do tell him this statement of yours.

Between a master and apprentice, i would love to see the differences.
Yeah. You make good points.
I still don’t think that their should be an imbalance between one vs one. If you can’t fend off one how could you possibly survive five…. and that’s where it loses form to me.
With no roles of course! one on one with any character and any build it should come down to skill, but I would argue the thief is just an easier way to play… the way in which you speak balance, doesn’t make sense. It almost as if people will argue the opposite just because they can.
If you are comparing a five on five in regular pvp I’m not, given their are many strategies and ways to approach how you go about fighting, building, competing.
My point is it’s as if the thief has a lot more to work with, multiple cloaks, blink, shadow step abilities, dodge on top of massive amounts damage when they hit you.
When I want to one vs one a stranger to check how my build is, all my gear and build stands up it like a joke, funny for everyone but me, I like to be competitive, so by saying that I would like to win at least one match of just for whatev’s but I don’t think that will happen as long as, no one wants things to change.
If I had been playing for two years as a thief and got accustomed to all the moves and way they perform I wouldn’t want to see what I enjoy change, and i’ve had someone show me how everything is balanced. I just can’t say I see it that way.
Feels good to vent.
Guardians have higher potential burst than thieves, they also have more natural passive and active defenses.
Thieves have more utility and mobility. They are also the first thing new players complain about, and its ALWAYS a L2P issue. But there is room for a bit of balance, they are not completely OP.

Don’t take things out of context. I was referring to the newly meta Hammer, Scepter/Focus build. The majority of thieves have yet to figure it out, but the top thieves have already figured out the match up and is much easier to deal with than gs,s/f guardians. Good luck in your thief endeavours. =D
I do play med guard, although with gs/sword + focus or gs/scepter + focus instead of hammer. I also usually wear the cleric amulet instead the berserker one (better sustain playing with pugs in ranked, which mostly is what I do).
Med guardians are a hard counter for thieves in most of cases if the same skill is involved. Is not that dps guardians can’t be defeated by thieves -and some builds can achieve more success than others-, but is really a uphill. Damage from dps guardians also escalates better the most people are around, due their strong aoe skills, whereas thieves excels in surgical strikes against a single target. But thieves are much better in terms of mobilitty, so they they have a much prominent role in rotations, decaping undefended points, etc.
In the same way, I found celestial d+d eles as a true hard counters against med guardians; I wasn’t ever able to defeat that kind of eles fighting against players of similar skill.
As with all the other classes you must play smart and aware about your limitations: if you are playing a burst thief the best you can do for your team is to kill weakened foes and help in transitions and soft decaps. Going 1 vs 1 against a full health med guard usually ends wasting your time. The only landscape in which I think that that behaviour can be productive is if you team already dominates the score and you are fighting the guard with both outside a point just to prevent him for aiding his team mates.
I was referring to the newly meta Hammer, Scepter/Focus build.
Really? come’on man, they just unequipped the Greatsword and equip the Hammer, (probably tweak some trait there and utilities) and viola they called it Newly Meta. we need to stop fooling ourselves, shall we.
but the top thieves have already figured out the match up and is much easier to deal with than gs,s/f guardians.
With what? with their wall of text on how to run kitten like this and that, must be like this and that to balance kitten out of it?. Did i miss something while i’m at the roof top?
