Guild Wars 2 E-sport.
I fight people, sometimes they kill me, sometimes I kill them. Fun is had by all. [/quote]
I think there’s no one left who believes this game will ever become esport. Well, there’s Clik, who will keep saying ‘more patience, you will not get esport instantly lol’ until he has no one to play against (cheers bro, I know you’re reading this).
I talked a bit with high level players. Most of them love the game, but are getting fed up with Anet’s everlasting ‘When It’s ready, we can’t talk about it yet.’. It seems most of them are putting march patch as the deadline for developers to get their kitten together and show some actual changes.
My feelings? In April even Desolation Mists will become a desert.
because gratitude is a burden and revenge a pleasure.”
I think it’s important to realize that time after release is irrelevant. Most games that are considered eSports were never developed with this in mind and took years to get to that point; the ones that were developed as eSports and are successful are clones of other games.
This game is already on everyone’s radar because it’s a good game. It won dozens of awards and has a pretty massive player-base (pvp+pve+wvw). As long as the game continues on the path it is on: good marketing, good player retention (outside of pvp) and albeit slow developments to the competitive aspects of pvp, it can definitely become an esport.
The most important thing is going to be a competent observer mode and notable personalities willing to cast games. DJWheat has expressed interest in the game; even one person like him combining their name recognition with Guild Wars 2’s could kick the game into high gear.
Also, a note to everyone: If you enjoy this game, posting despair threads is against your best interest. If you want to know why people are leaving it’s because they’re being conditioned to think that the game is doomed by everyone who supposedly loves the game. If you don’t enjoy the game, you have no reason to waste your own time on these forums.
- no build variety
- balancing problems (which is also the reason why there is no build variety)
- no game mode variety
- randomness (especially crits)
- game bugs (traits/skills not working, combos not working as intended, map bugs e.g. little stones which block skill pathing)
- tooltips, etc. not showing the real damage, CD and so on
- no way to practise different tactics for “pro teams” (everyone can see your tactics in hotjoin)
ehm…your points are senseless.
make a compare with LoL ( the most viewed e-sport game atm)
-no build variety ( every one running the same build on the same champions, is really hard to see something different)
-balancing problem ( a lots of balancing problem )
-no game mode variety ( only summoner rift, 5v5 )
-game bugs ( not many, but the game is in the third season, 4 years from the release)
and LoL have 200k of viewers when tournaments are up.
GW2 is not an e-sport because a lack of e-sport contents like
-ladder system
-spectator mode
-tournamets with money prize/sponsors prize
-commercials for promove their game, maybe on twich.
Imho they have to look back on GW1, think what was really good, and make the same features on GW2.
EDIT : maybe they can sell for a lower cost only the pvp features of game ( like in GW1) for increase their catchment area

massive player-base (pvp+pve+wvw)
Massive player base PvE+WvW. At this point PvP community is probably less than 200 people.
And I mean actual PvP community, not PvE players dropping in for 30 minutes a day for 4 achievement points.
because gratitude is a burden and revenge a pleasure.”
- Build variety in LoL = different champions, not items bought in the game (or would you define Guild Wars 2 builds by the armor the characters are wearing?)
- no big balancing problems, there are always the FOTMs which seem OP but besides that there was no game breaking champion or build in months (feel free to name some :P). New champions are not allowed for a certain amount of time before they are available in tournaments. If a champion still seems strong after that they will most likely be banned during the champion picks.
- nothing to add about the bugs
That’s why LoL is so popular when it comes to e-sports.
Besides that you are right about the ladder system and spectator mode. But like I said, I just wanted to mention “a few”, not make a complete list.
Tournamets with money prizes and sponsors will only come if they improve these things.
I do agree about Guild Wars 1 which was way better for e-sports imo.
Never mind the lack of ladder and whatever else, the biggest reason why GW2 will never be an e-sport is because the sPvP is horribly boring. No amount of ladder and MMR can make it enjoyable to watch.
— Can a game become an e-sport so far after release with such a small player-base?
Not it can’t because the competitive community has continually shrunk to the current very low stagnant levels. People like to point out that LoL took while to become esports, but it was continually growing over that early period.
— If the game became perfect tomorrow, how would you give the game enough life to become an e-sport?
Unfortunately conquest mode is not interesting enough, especially with this meta, to attract a large following. The actual combat is good, but the flow of matches is not. Conquest mode is played out, so even if the ladder and MMR is perfect, the actual game mode is boring.
— What percentage of gw2 population has even set foot in the heart of the mists?
There were tons of people who were initially interested in spvp and bout the game mainly for that reason. Most left simply because there was no ladder and it was hard to find competitive matches. There was nothing in between farming pugs or getting rolled by the few hardcore teams.
Its kind of funny to me that teams like TP and PZ are constantly trying to white knight for Anet and ‘help’ the community when it was those very people that made the game too expensive to learn in terms of losing tickets for most people.
Removing tickets now is pretty much to late.
— Is pvp viewer friendly?
The answer has to be a resounding no, based on the viewership numbers. There are only a few people who can even get 100 viewers these days.
It seems people would rather watch that guy who plays the auction house and gives away gold most of time time.
— sponsors
lol

Pretty much. Depth and excitement of gameplay are fundamental. Popularity and whole eSports deal naturally follow.
Personally I think A-net has to put all illusions of e-sport grandeur on hold and worry about actually growing the player base by putting in features players actually want and taking more decisive steps in balancing the classes. It irritates me when people mention a spectator mode something like that should be so far down the list as to be almost unseeable at this point. It seems to me they tried to build spvp from the top down when should have built it from the bottom up.
The PvP in GW2 has passed the deadline. There is no one left who really believes that this game is able to become an esport. But that’s not even the goal of Arenanet. Yes there are maybe two people at Arenanet working on PvP and maybe still believing it, but seriously that’s not enough. There’s simply not enough money for making it esport ready. For me, it took long time to come to that conclusion but there’s no hope. There was not enough money even from the beginning of developing the game. “We really want to try to make an esport” was just a marketing gag; nothing more. I just failed realising this at start.
I quit and i didn’t think that was possible after playing guild wars 1 since 2006 and being really excited about Guild Wars 2 ;-( .

What I meant was more “of all copies sold of gw2, how many of those users even went to the heart of the mists? 5%? 10%?”

Probably a good deal more than that, actually.
…for a free trip to Lion’s Arch. (:
It will be esport when enough players like the pvp. I watched my friend play lol for years , I used to laugh at him for playing a point and click game. But over time more and more players picked it up, not because it was super balanced or viewer friendly which it is . People started play it because it was FUN. And now I must admit I was wrong all those years.
You have to start with the FUN factor then you add in balance viewer friendly stuff. but unless it’s FUN for players no one will care and it will not be esport.
..meanwhile lol NA tourney stream has 150k viewers and his observer mode is season by season more perfect and entertaining.
good job!!

So why do we like this game enough to make posts nobody in power will read?
Why do pvpers play?

Because a bad game is still better than a terrible game.
I play LoL also, but I find GW2 more fun to watch.
I also find GW2 very fun to play.
GW2 viewership is just low for now, and it’s lacking in esports features. MM and ELO, spectator mode etc.
The main thing an aspiring esport needs is lots of players and thus lots of viewers. Making a free downloadable version of s/tPVP with gem store purchases would massively increase the playerbase and thus the viewership, but this isn’t required.
What is definitely required is the basic features of e-sports, quickly.
The game IS hurting in terms of watch-ability in its current state, let me explain why:
- No enemy cast bars: fights are nearly impossible for the viewer to follow accurately because many cast animations are the same.
- Worthless mini-map: green dots tell nothing, impossible to follow global awareness. Just switching out the green dots to class-based icons would be a simple fix.
- No custom games/spectator mode: Impossible to shoutcast matches.
Honestly though, I think GW2 will reach “t1” esports one day, it may just be like how Dota 2 is to LoL you know? less popular, but more/equally competitive. The dedication is there on anet’s part, and many organizations are ready to back up the scene with tournaments (will not give out specific names, but I can confirm this). It’s just a matter of when arenanet can patch these features into the game. But honestly, I’ve never seen a more dedicated developer team -they’ve probably even got 2 or 3 pvp devs reading this post right now (hi tyler).

Guild Wars 2 E-sport.
I Think that the best idea to make Guild wars 2 E-sport is to disconect spvp for the other part of the game. please make guild wars pvp client free for all players. Just like League of legend is. It will make it more popular for new players. Make connected access to store.. whre we can buy some pvp skins, new weapons etc. When someone will try in free sPvP mode then he will buy rest of the game. I think it is not a big problem to make separate client for developer. I dont like pve, dont like WWW too.. and I love spvp. So give ppl like me chance to play only that mode.

Bought this game off of hype and I thought I knew the direction that the dev team wanted to go with this game. Before release they were actively involved with the community. I haven’t touched this game in many many months so im just curious, have we received a rank system, matchmaking, spectator mode, anything towards esports?
everything you listed with the exception of spectator mode. The game has improved quiet a bit, but there is still a lot of work ahead.
why are there literally no viewers on twitch?
why are there literally no viewers on twitch?
typically, titles only generate high ratings when:
- A) something big is happening in the game. (runescape 2007 rollback for example)
- B) a very popular person is playing that game. (like when you see warcraft 3 get 5k viewers because oddone is playing it)
Since none if these rely apply to our game, it will be mostly just members of the PvP community watching one another. But you can see, when Team Paradigm/Guildcast starts streaming, GW2 can still get around 600-1k viewers, just because these are popular channels with a large following.
People tend to get caught up in all the “league of legends streaming revolution” ect and forget that it’s popularity/marketing > skill to generate a viewerbase. If this weren’t true, TSM would not generate the largest following on twitch, as they get beaten by pretty much any pro team outside of NA scene in every global LAN tournament they enter. TSM has generated a massive following because Reginald is great at promoting the brand, and has been ever since Dreamhack 2009.

Here is my version of let’s play GW2 solo MMR
Was gw1 an e-sport? cause I never saw that word ever in that game. Dont understand why people want this to become an e-sport, because they’ve changed from an e-sport game? Id rather have a balanced pvp game than e-sport. You shouldnt try and make something its not.
This game is about as far from an e-sport as hello kitty island adventure.
People need to get off the bandwagon and come back down to reality.

amen besides most of the bandwagon isnt even good enough to win cash prizes lol. Also anet stopped rl tournaments because rewards were getting too costly, in game points/credits were given for years afterwards. Not even sure if they want the game in that direction, which is fair enough, I wouldnt want half of you to get paid to play. no offence lololololol
