Hardest to easiest class
Hey everyone, the point of this topic is to post your rankings of what you believe is hardest class to play in PvP (sPvP / tPvP) to the easiest.
1- Ranger
2- Engineer
3- Necromancer
4- Elementalist
5- Mesmer
6- Warrior
7- Guardian
8- ThiefSo thief is easiest and ranger is hardest overall, in my opinion.
Hardest to play as in skilll level required or hardest to play as in ability to stomach the current playstyle?
Ranger is not a hard class to play, the results you get from playing it though…that’s a different story.

I’d dare to disagree. In my opinion.
1.Ranger(has insane dueling spec, but it isnt tourament viable, if it was it would be nr3)
2.Necro
3.Ele
4.Engi
5.Warrior
6.Thief
7.Mesmer
8.Guardian
Ranger is one of the easiest classes to play… Pyrial has it right, results however are not so good…
To me the topic lends itself to “hardest to easiest class to play to achieve good results”. So while ranger might be one of the easiest to play, the results do not amount to anything great at all.
1.Ranger
2.Necro
3.Ele
4.Engi
5.Warrior
6.Guardian
7.Mesmer
8.Thief
And depending on how many and which kits were talking on an engi I might switch engineer and elementalist

No .. surely not. Its more than to press 2 or 5 while on longbow. Many rangers dont even know how to play their ranger good.
But if you really do a good job as a ranger – a warrior for example is just cud for your pet.
1. Necro
2. Engi
3. Ele
4. Ranger
5. Mesmer
6. Warrior
7. Guardian
8. Thief
1. Ele or Engi

I think the question should be viewed as “which profession is the most difficult to play to it’s fullest potential”, or possibly “which is most difficult to play at a moderate level”. But definitely not “which is the hardest to achieve good results with” because that’s basically just an inverse list of “which profession is the best” which we have seen answered a million times.
My main class is the hardest, yours is the easiest, and the rest are medium.
It can also go this way: my main class is the hardest, and the class which keeps destroying me everyday is the easiest.

Agreed Nurt. I see various answers and it seems the question needs to be more specific. There really is no BEST class and there’s really no 1 build beats all, but it seems like that’s what these lists are, “Who has the cheesiest, easy to learn, easy to execute build that any baddie can use to win better than 50% of all their fights 1v1.”
I like the way you posed the question.
“Which profession is the most difficult to play to it’s fullest potential”
1 Elementalist
2 Engineer
3 Thief
4 Mesmer
5 Necro
6 Ranger
7 Guardian
8 Warrior
While others may not agree with this list I think it sums up nicely which classes are more complex and require far more elaborate combo’s, forethought, strategy and planning to play and execute at their FULL potential.
So in reverse from the bottom up, you have your classes that you just need to hit a couple of buttons repeatedly and you don’t have many other dynamics available to you.
Sure you could argue that a specific build for thief or mesmer is easy to play, but we’re talking full potential not just 1 spec that you believe to fit all situations because you died to it and felt your ego get slapped in the face when they danced on your corpse.
You’ll never be able to make a simple list. A class being easy to be played to a usable level does not translate them to being easy to play at a high level.
The results you get out of the class also don’t translate into difficulty. Playing a ranger is not hard, just not as rewarding as other classes.
All professions have their own quirks that make them easy or difficult to learn for any particular player.
IMO
1) Elementalist (Non Bunker)
2) Engineer / (Bunker Ele)
3) Necromancer
4) Ranger
5) Thief
6) Guardian
7) Mesmer
8) Warrior
Slightly influenced by the overall power of the classes as well.
I’m surprised people rate Mesmer so highly in terms of difficulty, it’s one of the THE most forgiving classes to play and is incredibly easy to pressure people to put fights in your favor. I understand there is some slightly deeper gameplay with juggling clone generation with actual shatter usage but it’s not really that complicated, although trying to make optimal use of the Daze Shatter takes skill.
Thief has some very faceroll level attacks and ways of dealing dmg, but they can still go splat very fast if the person isn’t used to it, although Thieves are incredibly easy to escape any fight with.
Warrior is an obvious one, they’re not OP at all, but they’re just extremely simplified as a proffession.
And this is coming from someone who’s most played classes was Thief/Mesmer for the longest time up until recently. I was actually hoping Mesmer would be as challenging to play as Elementalist is now tbh.
1. elementalist
2. engineer
3. necro
4.thief
5.mesmer
6.ranger
7.guardian
8.warrior
too be honest im looking at skill management mostly, but taking in to account how easy it is to get a desired effect. the only ones im about iffy on here are the thief and mesmer positions, in certain situations its posible to do well with absolutely no skill on a thief, and same with mesmer, however to actually play these classes well amougst good players it suddenly requires alot of co-ordination and judgement.
elementalist is easy once you have mastered it, but actually takes you a longer time then other classes just becoming accustomed to the skill set and the changes that seem to be made every patch. playing correctly for your build super important on ele
necros are very useful situationally and require thoughtful use of skills on many builds and clever use of deathshroud to mitigate dmg, engis its totally build dependant, if your getting good results by juggling between kits that can require alot of concentration and timing.
ranger id say.. isnt a difficult class to play at all you just have to have alot of common sense to survive.
for guardian i just feel you dont really need to put alot of time or effort into doing well, that being said of course there are some guardians who are awesome players.
for warriors of course they going to be a pretty straight foward charachter, obviously this doesnt anyone can just pick up a warrior and rule, its just that theres not much to learn, you just gotta get it under your fingers and away you go.
tbh i feel “hardest class” is abit unrepresentitive, certain builds on different classes, provide much more results but also much more depth and learning curve, i would say judge the build not the class :P
most forgiving in terms of your mistakes
1. ele
2. guard
3. engi
4.thief
5.mes
6.necro
7.ranger
8.war
eng is hard to play? :O Of course, I’m no good at all) I find an ele/necro harder to play
My main class is the hardest, yours is the easiest, and the rest are medium.

1- Ranger
2- Engineer
3- Necromancer
4- Elementalist
5- Mesmer
6- Warrior
7- Guardian
8- ThiefSo thief is easiest and ranger is hardest overall, in my opinion.
I totally agree with the OP and here’s why.
1. Ranger- No other class do I find myself waiting for the weapon swap as if it could never come fast enough every ability is used in a fight and timing is crucial.
2. Engineer so many weapons that can be used, postioning is so important due to stationary turrets.
3. Necromancer- Timing Death Shroud/Plague/Lich is so important, as is postioning for wells, a hard class to master.
4. Elementalist- Positioning and timing are vital you need to dart in and get away many times in the course of a fight. Alot of swaps to different elements with good timing are necassary.
5. Mesmer- the only class that rewards standing still, most of the skill comes from rotation and is vastly easier to play then the 4 classes above it. Phase Retreat can actually throw you up walls and ledges making terrain awareness for this class moot.
6. Warrior- With very high dmg, good health and high toughness without building for it this class can make many mistakes and still collect a ton of kills in any Battleground. More skill comes from the build then the playing.
7. Guardian- for a class that survivable they have some descent dmg too, so many protective abilities with only the weakness of being kited. Due to all the protective abilities they can fall back on they can make a ton of mistakes and survive wearing there enemies down.
8. Thief- LOL this guy with more get of jail cards than the monocle wearing old man in monopoly, plus the fastest runner, and highest dmg you can log on this guy day 1 with no clue how to play and feel like a god. The only class I’ve seen rank 1-9 people come in top Number 1 in spvp over and over again. This class will end up being a cautionary tale to future designers in what not to do when making a class.
Most difficult to play to its fullest potential: (Only professions that I have played sufficiently thoroughly)
1, Necromaner
2, Elementalist
3, Mesmer
4, Guardian
1. Thief – difficult to win or even stay in combat against many other classes/builds. Requires very precise timing in many situations.
2. Necro – can beat any class/builds (and force them to flee). Requires some timing to interrupt opponents (e.g., interrupt their heals).
3. Ranger – I’m not completely sure where to put this class. Doesn’t seem to be able to handle some classes very well (e.g., mesmers).
4. Elementalist – a glass cannon elementalist may be harder to play, but my build uses Soldier’s Amulet and heavily makes use of boons that I can keep up much of the time. As such, this class seems very easy to play with and win. My win/lose ratio in hotjoin is highest with this class among the above classes.
5. Guardian
Guessing your classes made it to the bottom of the list. I play engineer and engineer only and look at my list. This is a post about people’s OPINIONS so who cares
You know, this game is like few months old, and I am pretty sure, that 99% of people haven’t played all classes yet, so their opinions doesn’t have any value. Even if somebody played them all, they base their opinion about like few hours of gaming, a single FoTM build, which is nothing.
Yes, this topic doesn’t have any sense, but if you enjoy it, keep posting anyway.

Well you see there this little thing called public forums. People can make posts and ask others about their opinions. This OP asked us our opinions on the hardest to easiest class and we replied accordingly. Your stating the obvious, clearly our opinions don’t matter on easiest to strongest because that’s all it is, an opinion. So posts like yours just seem absolutely redundant and hold no value in a thread like this. Would you reply to your friend like that if they asked you your opinion of class difficulty rankings? Seriously dude lighten up a little
My main class is the hardest, yours is the easiest, and the rest are medium.
It can also go this way: my main class is the hardest, and the class which keeps destroying me everyday is the easiest.
So your saying you play a thief
Seems like a lot of people come to these forums to say they don’t want to hear anybody’s opinions.
On topic: it’s never been a secret that the developers made some professions more complex than others. That doesn’t necessarily translate “hard” to “easy” for PvP, though, because the simpler professions are also the easiest to counter.
I prefer a 4-kit engineer to any other profession/build, and while it takes some pretty serious cooldown management, most other players aren’t able to predict what’s coming.
So I personally like the forgiving/unforgiving scale. For example, warrior is less forgiving than thief, even though the mechanic is simpler.
How in the world are people putting Ranger as a tough class to play? All I see is auto attack and ability spam all day long. Sure they have a difficult time succeeding given their under powered state, but that doesn’t necessitate it having a ‘high skill’ cap.
Engineer, Elementalist, and Necromancer require more sheer technical skills but each class can have its specific difficulties given a situation or build faced.

wooow ! thats question !
isn t possible compare :
exemple :
elem staff can trip
elem staff support
elem staff glass canon
elem staff signet
elem D/D cantrip
ect ect ect ect …..
exemple Elem D/D cantrip bunker is very easy to play and is very good .
but
Elem Staff Ghyphe support is very hard to play because cast is long is very hard to play .
if you want really compare you must compare on all class , all stuff , all utility , all possiblity …
Easiest to play
1.Warrior
2.Ranger
3.Thief
4.Guard
5.Mesmer

As a thief…you are wrong. We are number 8. It’s easy to play, and I don’t mind that. I also don’t think it’s an insult. The complexity from thief isn’t from the profession, but from team interaction. At least it’s my opinion.
How in the world are people putting Ranger as a tough class to play? All I see is auto attack and ability spam all day long. Sure they have a difficult time succeeding given their under powered state, but that doesn’t necessitate it having a ‘high skill’ cap.

It’s because of how Shortbow and Longbow are Designed, They’re very simple to use.. and frankly require little thought.
Sword/Dagger with Axe/Torch though, Requires you to manage abilities and cooldowns, and constantly weapon swap.
The class is further increased in difficulty because you living relies completely on Dodging..Constantly….like all the time…While swapping your pet and managing your abilities list.
So it becomes a fairly difficult class to play correctly.
I however believe Elementalist probably requires a bit more skill, As you have more abilities you have to manage, granted I’ve not played one a whole lot….It might be extremely easy to learn once you develop the correct rotation.
The Easier classes to play have “combat” resets, aka if you kittenup, you can escape the fight..This includes the Mesmer/Thief.

Ok, but again – why is it pointless? Because people have no idea what they are writing about. It’s making a thread, which just seems easy to discuss for everyone, but in real it’s a very complex thing.
PS: no, I don’t feel offended, that thief is at the bottom of someone’s list. I even have a collection of screenshots of some people whining about the class in-game. I like to browse it from time to time for entertainment.

Easiest to Play:
1) Warrior
2) Guardian

Hardest to Succeed With:
1) Engineer
2) Elementalist
3) Ranger

7) Mesmer
8) Guardian
My list may be a tad different than everyone elses, but I will explain. I have tried out all the classes and given them a fair share of time due to PvP reasons, it is my opinion that the Engineer and Elementalist has a steeper curve than all other classes due to the large assortment of skills they have to juggle. The only reason I rate Engineers higher than Elementalists is that they have no CD when it comes to kit swapping. When you’re playing an elementalists, it’s easy to fall into a rhythm or cycle when it comes to juggling attunements. Some skills in different elements chain perfectly into one and another and the CD with attunements means you want to use it most efficiently. The Engineer’s combos are more free form as they need to pull out the correct kit at the correct moment, otherwise the two classes are more of less the same. That doesn’t mean the Elementalist is any less punishing to play, if you make a mistake, it’s going to hurt. I just feel Engineers have to do more.
The Mesmer does behave differently from your average class in its skill set, however once you get familiar with it, I feel it’s definitely one of the most forgiving classes out there. You have a tool for every situation and plethora of ways to tip the balance in your favor, their burst spec is also in my opinion way stronger than thieves.
Thieves get a target painted on their back because the majority of their builds rely on a corner stone attack and it completely stomps new comers or people who just aren’t very good at PvP yet. However, at higher levels, thieves actually have to be tricky as the more well known combos are extremely predictable and easily countered once you see it more. They also have far less innate defenses than the Mesmer and is in my opinion, the squishiest class in GW2. That being said, their overall class strength is still really high, they have all the tools they need to succeed hence the rating.
Warriors are a lot like thieves, they flat out destroy inexperienced players thus leading to the QQ about 100b. Yes it hits like a truck, but they’re also way more predictable than thieves and they lack as many fancy tricks as other classes. A warrior that succeeds in higher skill environment usually has to play really well with his team to ensure his burst sets up perfectly and doesn’t go to waste. Otherwise, if you can’t avoid a 100b combo by now, you’re just not as good as you think you are.
Ranger weapons are extremely one dimensional, so are most of their utilities. I feel like they’re the “warriors” of primarily ranged classes, simple to execute and understand. That being said, while their best specs are by no means abysmal, their skillset greatly limits them. They simply lack tricks and utilities like most of the other viable classes. The good rangers out there really have to massively outplay people to win.
(edited by Lumines.3916)
Its all subjective.
Thief definitely feels the easiest though, especially a backstab build. Warrior is also somewhat easy (its like a thief with way less survival/escape options) Bunker guardian is also extremely easy to play as well.
Ranger’s probably the hardest, i rarely see anyone do well with a ranger, aside from being maybe a little annoying. The rest are all around the same imo, not terribly easy or difficult.
My main class is the hardest, yours is the easiest, and the rest are medium.
Could not been said better.
Some skewed opinions here…
I main a thief, and alt ranger and mesmer. Toyed with a few others. My 2 cents on the three I know best.
Ranger is a very easy class to play in many of their builds, with a difficulty bump if you are micromanaging certain pets, playing bunker, or playing MH sword well. Their lack of effectiveness makes them seem harder, but I think that’s false and has to do with their balance, not their difficulty.
Mesmers I find about in the middle. They have some slightly easier specs and some slightly harder specs. This class is a little harder to play well in higher level tourney imo. Easy in hotjoin against casuals or pugstomping tourney.
Thieves seem to have the most misconceptions. They are easy only with instagib burst builds in hotjoin against people who don’t know what they’re doing. I admit you will be godly there if you are a good thief. However, in competitive play against other skilled players, they are balanced and average to slightly above average in difficulty. They also have some clever tricks that I’ve seen maybe 1 or 2 very good thieves actually know about and pull off. That cheesy BS burst usually doesn’t work well there.
FWIW I think ele, engineer, and necro are probably among the hardest to play but that it evens out a bit across the board at higher skill levels.
NA tPvP – Elementalist – Thief
1 Engineer
2 Ele
3 Necro
4 Mesmer
5 Ranger
6 Thief
7 Warrior
8 Guardian
I’m not considering mind wrack mesmers, hb wars, bs hs thieves and so on…because i’m talkin’ about the hardest class to play GOOD. And those burst builds are totally uneffective vs 90% high rank players expec in tPvP so i’m not putting them into the equation.

7. warrior

1. Ele
2. Engineer
3. Necro (talking 1v1 here, not sitting miles off the point using marks like an idiot)
4. Thief
5. Ranger
6. Warrior
7. Mesmer
8. Guardian
It’s very easy to be a bad ele, if that makes sense and a good elementalist will destroy you in a 1v1 situation most of the time. When I play elementalist, I have to try so hard to versus mesmers who can just setup a 3-4 skill combo in a very short time. I don’t think I need to explain how elaborate a standard scepter dagger rotation is XD
Engi, necro hard classes to master really. Engi you gotta know your combo fields and time your cooldowns perfectly to be effective. Necro I’m just incapable of playing I swear. I get facerolled by every class I play against :P but maybe I’m just bad. Typically necros are fairly lacking in 1v1 situations; don’t get caught in my wells and its GG me.
Now thief for No.4 because I’d say this is a hard class to play. Not because its necessarily difficult, but you can’t just waltz in a 4v5 spam a few skills and hope to come out on top. Now the game has been out for some time, people are aware of how quickly a thief can burst them down you will get focused instantly by any good team and you are always the main threat and the main difficulty is staying alive while maintaining dps.
Ranger and warrior, not a fan of both classes. Alright for pug fun and trolling frees and they’re fairly easy to play. Trap build (which is arguably the only viable spec in tpvp) is just kiting and conditions and warrior is a very simple class IMO.
Mesmer and guardian, super troll easy classes. Mesmer shatter, extremely simple combo to master and you really don’t need to be a grandmaster SC2 player to be able to play it ( I mean the game controls the clones for you -_-)
Guardian is just facemash in most cases. In free tournaments, you will stay alive for a long period of time without really understanding the class. Paids are a little different though, gotta know when to use your dodge and when you should do X,Y and Z, but aside from that, this class is very noob friendly
From harder to easier, my opinion based on experience for each class:
1) Necromancer
2) Elementalist
3) Engineer
4) ranger
5) Warrior
6) Thief
7) Mesmer – loaded shatter build , jumped in spvp and started laughing hard on how I could kill people with practically zero effort, all I had to do is press 5-3-7-3-F1 and win lol
8) Guardian – first time played guardian, with no clue on how to play one, I loaded a soldier amulet, pump up power, jump in the middle of a zerg with a greatsword, ended up top score (200+) for 3 consecutive matches…that’s all
You can’t base that on classes… A squishy thief is much harder to play than a sustain-ele, while a tanky thief is much easier to play than a burst-ele.
id say for me – necro is the easiest in sPvp but in PVE i prefer my ele..
1. Ele
2. Engineer
3. Necro (talking 1v1 here, not sitting miles off the point using marks like an idiot)
4. Thief
5. Ranger
6. Warrior
7. Mesmer
8. Guardian
I’d essentially agree with this list except I’d move Elementalist below Necro on the list. Elementalist is my most played class and the class does require that sheer technical skill of attunement switching to play adequately, which lends to a higher skill floor like Necro and Engineer.
I just feel that the way the attunement system was designed, its easy to fall into a rhythm given how your options are ultimately limited by the cooldowns on your swap. Engineer isn’t as inherently limited, thus lending to a higher skill cap.
The question whether a class is hard to play or not depends entirely on the situation that the player is presented in. Some people here say a certain class is easy clearly haven’t played those classes in certain situations. Like for example, seeing a line of conditions on my thief fills me with anxiety, versus my ele who basically LOLs all day long while nuking everyone in the area to death. A thief may be easier to get into given how the initiative system and certain weapon sets were designed(low skill floor), but playing on in a competitive setting against coordinated burst and good players will have your palms sweating as you fight for your life every second of the game. Initiative, while very newb friendly, also can allow great plays from good players if managed correctly.
Condiments-Thief
It really depends how you define your terms.
Mesmer for example is easy to do well with but it also has one of the highest skill caps of any class. Low skill floor, high skill cap. Depending on whether you are talking about skill floors or skill caps the mesmer will come near the top or near the bottom.
1.necro
2.rest
