This is mostly for the duelers in join smaller games. Do you get a lot of unprovoked, hate messages from players you dueled, or played against in Spvp? I find myself, more than usual, receiving a lot of whispers from players calling me a B**ch, tw*t, f*g, n****r, and every other name you can think of over a match.

Or sometimes, it’s not that extreme, but I get people who try to discredit my win over them with an excuse. Like, “you only beat me because you play <insert class>.”

It’s gotten to a point that these same people are sending me messages saying they’re reporting me for using mods. Because obviously, if they lost, it has nothing to do with being outplayed; in their mind it’s because the other person is using mods. Twice today this happened.

What’s going on with this Spvp community. Has there been a shift at some point in the last month or so because I don’t remember it being this bad?

And I have a question for the devs:
How do you deal with players who were reported for using mods? I’m in a position right now where twice I have been reported for using mods and I haven’t, ever. I think the players doing the false reporting should be penalized in some way. It’s sad when a game’s community tries to get another player banned for losing a duel. Are these the type of players you want to keep playing the game?

Yes … constantly. My Ranger Needle Slinger is always getting messages like that. I just lol most of the time. When they start saying they are going to report me .. I say go ahead.

I always thought it was the younger crowed talking all the smack, but sadly, the older people get worse sometimes lol. Im guessing they are just that competitive.

I would not worry about the report threats.

About being reported for using “mods” when you’re not: you’re fine, no need to stress it, they’ll know if you are or not. Most people that say “reported” aren’t actually taking the time to report you, anyway.

About people sending you “hate messages:” yeah, this will happen. Unfortunately this is just how the internet works. Instead of responding and going back and forth yelling at each other, just say “k” and nothing else. If it really gets to you, you can always report them.

But don’t worry about it, we’re not all that bad!

Cause I ain’t perfect, I never said I was.
But now they’re hating cause a brotha finally got some buzz

things I’ve seen so far:
- interrupts (shieldbubble, fear) not working on enemy stomping an ally. no aegis/stability on them, no blindness on me (or the downed person, which uses his interrupt as well).
- perma-invulnerability of a ranger in down state (on land, in water I don’t even try to kill a ranger)
- stealth over 10 seconds without a refuge
- invulnerability (or alternatively taking nearly zero dmg, only 10-20 hp hits) for 5-10 seconds without having any buffs on them (like endure pain or elixir s or one of the other skills) – and then suddenly dropping like a fly from a few auto attacks.
- suddenly invisible rangers (not after using any kind of immobilize/knockdown effect)

were all those people using some kind of mods? probably not. some may have been using a simple exploit, for others I simply may have been mistaken – like the invis ranger, maybe a warriors mace 5 hit him, its 1200 and could’ve traveled quite a distance without me noticing.
I reported them in the hopes that if something smells fishy, ANet should know about it and look into it. maybe it was just a bug, then it needs fixing. maybe I’m mistaken, unfortunately I can’t write so into the report box – I hope ANet is sensible enough to see reports only as a ‘look here’ marker, nothing more.

how do YOU decide when to report somone? and for what? as there’s no really fitting option in the dropdown.

but either way, calling them names is absolutely unnecessary.. and at least there IS an option for verbal abuse in the reports ;-) I use this option quite often as well.

Lol every single game with any sort of competition will have people screaming hax at each other. To me it just boosts my ego to have people convinced im cheating when I really am not. For example, according to some idiots I’ve come across, all my controllers in fps games have modded controllers, I aimbot and also a noob rusher/camper. All those stupid unfounded accusations just make me think “wow am I that good?”

Simply put, laugh it off or just ignore it. And I think its safe to assume that ANet, like all gaming companies, don’t take kindly to people filling their boxes with false reports. So the people who actually reported you for nothing(assuming u were legit) will most likely be dealt with accordingly

This is the internet; people are prone to misunderstand eachother when communicating only by writing … at least when they don’t take the time to fully understand eachother, and that takes time. And time … is something everyone seems to take too dearly to waste.

My advice is to just say “k” and move on (as Follidus suggested) … report them or ignore them if it is that bad. I have strangely found 3 people on ignore … something I have never had in any mmo before, even while being the target for a lot of envy.

Which bring me to the question of why people are hateful. My answer would be, that the alternative doesn’t feel like an option, since the consequences would imply that they are not so fantastic themselves. And that is really something this community has to learn: Being interested in learning and communicate about the funny/effeective things you can do. I think some of the better players do a great job about this, but average Joe doesn’t seem to be that informed nor that interested. In other words: Isn’t it strange, that people are not interested in learning about how you win, rather than being defensive? This is something we should strive to turn imho.

All that being said: Some classes are incredible effective for the effort you put in it compared to other classes … that does lead to some prejudices flourishing. I have had “Mr 1-spammer” and “Needle-slinger” thrown at me while I was running a pure melee-build as ranger. In other words: Ignorance coupled with cheesiness is a “bliss”.

@Aragiel: Well … nowadays “GG” is used as much in spite or in a derogatory manner … unfortunately.
I don’t think it is static, as you imply, but rather something based on cognitive dissonance as I suggested or “fear”. And instead of fueling that fear we should rather try to work around it.

Just throwing this out but I got a douchy buddy on LIVE who likes to throw out GG then follows it up with “as in ‘get good’”. Sometimes acronyms aren’t the best way to communicate
