Help me understand Stats and more.
Stats in PvP are normalized (everyone has the same, albeit is your choice to use one amulet or other and the kind of traits you select).
Doesn’t matter if you walk into PvP with a lvl 5 character wearing white armor/weapons or your character is a consumated lvl 80 toon full of ascendant gear and legendary weapons. Doesn’t affect the stats at all in PvP.
What happens is that you’re fighting against experienced players using very carefully created builds while you are making probably sub-optimal choices and lack knowledge and experience about a ton of aspects of the game. Plus, the game isn’t balanced 1 vs 1, which means that some classes/builds can hardcounter others with ease. But isn’t a big deal due you can lose every 1 vs 1 in the game and still being able to win the match if you play to win.
Characters used in structured PvP gain access to a separate PvP Build. This mechanic allows players to be on an equal playing field with the same attributes, skills, traits, and equipment options as other players. Players can change the character’s build through the PvP Build panel.
In other words, stats are normalized in PvP. Assuming the same Amulet and Rune, a level 1 Mesmer will have the same numerical stats as a level 80 Mesmer. Different classes have a bit of variation.
So the only functional difference between a PvP level 1 and a PvP level 80 is the amount of time on that character.
BTW: 19 out of 46 is a decent w/l ratio. That’s about 40%. That’s about where I sit too.
Is there any insight into what’s going to happen to the future of PvP, will it become more or less balanced? I noticed some pretty insane Mesmer’s out there.
I’d guess that we’ll have a month or two of the new HoT specs being OP just from people not playing against them. Then we’ll get back to roughly the same balance as we have now.

Thank you for the insight, and for not being rude, I know game communities can be pretty hostile.
Well it’s good to know I’m not doing so bad then, and I’ll try to be less frustrated next time a Mesmer hits me for 11k :p lol
As I have said before, I have played this game since release. Recently starting up again after some time away and a second account, I wanted to start getting into PvP (not to be confused with WvW) and having played some over the past couple days and seeing some of the differences between classes, well I need to know a few things.
First, I see a HUGE disadvantage between particular classes and levels, I start getting excited when I get teamed with a full 80 team as that is the only time I win a match maybe it’s just more skill from players that have been playing longer, literally my win loss ratio is so bad, it’s embarrassing, I think 19 out of 46 at this point. Now I know some will say, well you’re a noob and you suck so get better… yeah well that’s not the case, I’m actually quite decent, being able to take down most others in a 1v1 situation with my elixir based dual pistol engineer at level 19, and this makes me think it’s not about levels or gear, but then again… well idk.
That being said, it’s not always the case, I’ve run into people who just do insane amounts of damage in a very short, so short in fact I don’t even have time to activate my heal (A.E.D.). That is, to say the least, frustrating.
So I guess the point is, does it all come down to abilities? Does being level 80 affect stats, how about level 80 gear? Ascended, exotic.. so on. Or does everybody have the same stats no matter level 1 with no gear or level 80 with the best gear? Minus of course runes and Amulet.
Is there any insight into what’s going to happen to the future of PvP, will it become more or less balanced? I noticed some pretty insane Mesmer’s out there.
If you really want to start winning then you need to stop worrying about balance and start viewing yourself and your opponents in terms of strengths and weaknesses. Yours vs your opponents. Your teams vs their teams.
It would also help if you used a build suited to the task: Conquest. You can find those at www.metabattle.com
You don’t have to follow them to the letter, but it’s good to know what’s in use and what your up against. Success is largely determined by who’s more prepared to make smart decisions.
And from one Engi to another: P/P isn’t in a strong place in PvP. Nor is AED. Engi has a variety of options though, so don’t get disheartened.

Edit: Also, don’t worry about losing. Everyone loses and dies a lot when they’re learning a new game. Just try to learn from your deaths and losses so that you don’t repeat. And don’t accept that as foregone conclusions or formalities. If you died you made a mistake. recognize it, learn from it, and try to avoid letting it happen again. Experience is the best education.
I’ve stayed at this party entirely too long

know these when you pvp:
1. Game is balanced more or less. i.e while there are classes that’s more wanted in top end teams no one class can outright cake walk through any other class if player skill are equal. So if you get insta melted there IS a way to avoid it.
2. You will at best get 60% win rate , most players no matter how good they are get 50% when they solo que.
3. Know that you are just 1 / 5 on a team and 1 /10 in a match so you are most likely only going to have 10-25% say in the outcome of the match. Some times when you are by far the best player or by far the worst player in the match you can win or loss the match for your team by yourself but that’s extremely rare.
I would say that since damage is normalized like the posters above stated, your best learning opportunity is to go to metabattle to view the current top classes/builds. Get a review of the builds so you know what you are facing when you go into a match. Also hit the ‘b’ button go bring up the roster and see what the opposing team has for players. Based on the metabattle listing, you should know what each of the builds are on the opposing team about 50% of the time.
That’s not a critical piece though, when you engage your opponent, you want to see what they are using for weapons which will dictate the skills they are using. Is this a P/P thief or d/p? Is this a staff guardian or sword/focus? What’s the warrior using for weapons? This will let me know what skills I need to use.
My advice is to start with a bunker/celestial build which can be more forgiving for new players. It will give you the most amount of stats to survive. So focus on surviving your fights. Most of the time, if you can clear conditions and heal yourself while putting out a moderate amount of damage, then you can out sustain your opponent provided you have secured the point.
The second thing to look at for win/loss is what points you have in your favor. Make sure you always have 2 points with your team’s color to ensure you are gaining points. Fight around the point. It’s ok to flee if you think you can go to a point that has less defenders.
The key to the early learning cycles is to learn how to survive encounters. Once you have learned how each class plays against you, then you can start to focus on offensive builds which require more experience and have more reward.
Good luck.
Level/rank difference is pretty much time spent. Stats and traits are all the same. As much as everyone hates to admit, the only thing that matters in sPvP is your skill. Oh and don’t be naked, you’ll lose armor for that but it doesn’t matter what armor you’re wearing as long as you’re wearing it.
Oh and as a lot of the above posters mentioned, meta battle.com is a great site. Use it as a template though, since you won’t run the build the same way the build maker uses it, but it’ll give you an idea of what is expected of you at top tiers.

Thank you for this, very good advice.
