Hotjoin Remove Rewards - Yes or No?
Or they could just alter Hotjoin so that players less enthusiastic about PvP still have a place to accomplish things. Remove the ability to spectate, rejoin a team, switch teams, or even force people to join in pairs(to prevent lopsided teams).
Like it or not, some people don’t always have time for queues and only really join PvP to get dailies done. Removing that will likely just make many stop PvPing altogether. Since Ranked and Unranked are effectively the same atm, it’ll just make it more likely for those previous hotjoin players to get matched up against more organized teams and get completely curb stomped.
A good solution should actually fix the problems, not just basically delete everything associated with them.
Here is a better idea:
- Have a REAL Practice Mode, giving full reward (500 points) if you win or lose by playing on a class you don’t play very much. In the real practice mode you can only join a team that has the least points. You can join this mode with your most played class but every much will reward like a loss (200 points.) EXCEPT any player under rank 10. Rank players 1-10 are locked into using this mode.
- Have a warm up mode, which players are not penalized by playing their most played class but follows the win/lose reward ratios and still restricts joining a team with the least points. This unlocks at rank 10 and in warm up you are not fully penalized for losing a 4v5.
- Volunteering is not a clickable option, after 10 seconds the team with the least players will get the player on the other team with the highest rank (if a tie, the most game points from the two highest ranked)
- Have tiers of what players can play against, you can play on any tier LOWER than your rank but you are only rewarded for playing on your own tier level. There is no reason for a rank 80 to be against a rank 6. The brackets can be broken into ranks 1-19, 20-39, 40-59 and 60-80. This way you can practice or warm up against other players your own level and be punished for curb stomping anyone lower, yet, you can still play with your new friends.
- Conquest Maps are unlocked as players progress in tiers.
Ranks 1-19 Battle of Kyhlo, Forest of Niflhel, Legacy of the Foefire.
Ranks 20-39 Temple of the Silent Storm and Spirit Watch.
Ranks 40+ Skyhammer, Courtyard
- Keep ranked locked until rank 40.
- Have PvP progression, allowing players to unlock harder to use/master runes, sigils and amulets as they rank up. There is no reason for a rank 2 warrior to be using zerker amulet, scholar runes and bloodlust sigils. Ease players new PvP items when they rank up. Have it players unlock every item by rank 30.
- Remove the daily reward restriction for Practice (and Warm-Up) Arenas. There will be no reason to restrict players from getting rewards in this mode as long as the PvP is more fun than AFKing for rewards.
- Oh, bring back Random Arenas from GW1, get a random team, play non-stop until you lose. Players can unlock this at rank 20.

All rewards to be removed from hotjoin – No rank, No dailies.
Cons
None.
Welcome to the PvP forums! here’s a list of cons.
1) Unranked becomes the new Practice or “Hot Join”
2) People will quit or afk more often when things don’t go there way
3) There is no punishment for quitting matches, see pages 2-7 and see one of the 10 threads on this issue.
4) Custom Arenas would be come useless
5) Practice or “Hot Join” will be come useless and a baren wasteland.
The idea for practice, also know as “Hot Join” was to introduce people to the PvP environment and have them learn the mechanics as well as for veteran players to test their builds. The first portion is why rewards and rank points need to stay for Practice also known as “Hot Join”.
Slamming everyone into the same queue for the sake of lower queue times is no the way to go. Yes, things will be faster; however, the quality of games will be a lot worse then they are now. Instead of having someone who’s within 20 ranks or so of you, you will end up with people who may be 75-80 ranks below you.
This will highly encourage more people to AFK or quit matches when they find out they are teamed with new players.
Yes, the match making system needs to be improved; however, this will just make things a lot worse…. especially under the current situation.
I suggest the following be done instead:
1) Rank Points in Practice also known as “Hot Join” be lowered by 33%
2) Set a hard cap on how many rewards they can earn in a server day. I would suggest no more than 5 rewards a day from PvP from Practice. This would mean you can only do 1 tier a day from practice.

It was a complement. The amount of loyal fanboyism this beta weekend is toxic.
If they actually do my suggestion, it would be for the best for ArenaNet to remove unranked as there will be no reason for it. (Random Arena-style mode would replace it, and be community building)
ArenaNet seems to forget friendships are forged better when you play with a team for 5+ rounds.

Ah ok, can never tell :P some people usually use that line when they are getting ready to roast me on something.
Ideally, I would personally like to see PvP reverted back to:
Hot Join
Solo Arena
Team Arena
With more restrictions added to Team Arena to prevent solo queue within it. Solo Arena before, you couldn’t team up so that’s fine. Then Hot Join, could do what you suggested in regards to that particular area.

The main issue I see at the moment is the Dev’s seem to totally ignore any threads about hotjoin/practice (and there have been many) that suggest valid changes, like the ones posters have made here, which is why I believe removing rewards would be the simplest and most beneficial solution.
Certainly one of the keys to my suggestion is that punitive measures need to be employed to deter leaving during a game – IMHO if that issue could be tackled then many of the potential negatives discussed here, could be avoided and un-ranked would not become the new hotjoin
Lowering queue times is not one of the aims of the suggestion, I just think it would be one of the benefits – the main aim IS to get rid of the current iteration of hotjoin and channel players into trying a game mode which is fun, when one is playing a reasonably balanced game.
Josh’s ‘New to PvP? Start here’ post specifically directs new players to hotjoin as a place to ‘get their feet wet’ – I think it’s safe to say he probably hasn’t joined a hotjoin game since he wrote the post a couple of years ago, other wise he would have edited it to ‘New to Pvp? Do Not start here’.
Sadly the sort of experience are new players getting in hotjoin is likely to put them off PvP for life.

Bots gona move to (un)ranked, even if they lose 80% of their matches because of the 5v4 scenario they still can do it cuz reporting some1 atm makes no real changes.

Do you not think that hotjoin in it’s current state is one of the primary reasons more people don’t play PvP and the community is so small?
Anet seems intent on trying to build the PvP game from the top down, which to me is just silly. As far as I can see all the time and resources that are available are being put into things like promoting elite high level tournaments and constant tinkering with the formulas for trying to create balanced matches in ranked arena’s – How about worrying about the bottom end where the vast majority are getting their first experiences of pvp – fix that and you at least have some hope that the community will grow.
Signed.
Practice mode should be practice, not a PvE friendly farm.
People should be encouraged to get better if they want to be rewarded for it so:
1st full round of practice mode to reward x rank points. Every round after degrades rank gained by 50%. Rank gain stays as it is now until Rank10 (If you’re practicing, you do so in anticipation of joining unranked, rank gain is none essential to you.)
All reward track progress is locked to 1 tier per day.

Sorry if I sound like a TV Sci-Fi character but your points are ‘illogical’
(no. people will stop playing pvp all together.) If you remove rewards from hotjoin, what leads you to believe all those currently playing unranked and ranked will stop playing?
(queue times will never be shorter.) the more players there are playing unranked and ranked, the shorter the queue times.
(you are also forgetting the mandatory 2 minutes wait before a match can even begin.
wait at least 2+ minutes for queue to pop.
wait 2 minutes before the match even begins. ) Again, how does removing rewards from hotjoin change this is any way?
(enjoy match with terrible match making, afk players, 4 vs 5, toxic behavior etc) matchmaking would be significantly improved if there were more players playing unranked/ranked – In my experience 4v5 matches happen quite infrequently in unranked/ranked whereas in hotjoin I haven’t even seen a 5v5 for the whole game for at least a year.
Welcome to the PvP forums! here’s a list of cons.
2) People will quit or afk more often when things don’t go there way
Not necessarily true. People give up on matches when they’re hopelessly losing. If matchmaking is doing its job, the number of blow-out matches should be low, especially with more people queuing. So I would strike that as a con.

i can accept this.
Daroon.1736:Do you not think that hotjoin in it’s current state is one of the primary reasons more people don’t play PvP and the community is so small?
Um NO it’s an issue but it’s not a major must fix now issue.
1) Fix people rage quitting
2) Fix the issue with people idling
3) Fix the Queue times
4) Fix the Match Making system
5) Fix the lack of anything to do while you queue
1,2, and 4 are bound together. You can’t fix 1 and 2 without fixing 4 and vice versa.
3 is a delicate issue, you can’t just trash can Practice and throw in a giant crowd. For a month that may fix the queue problems but then you just exacerbated points 1 and 2.
In order to even implement the idea of restructuring practice or “Hot Join” the following MUST be done first.
1) Fix the Match Making System
2) Implement a punishment system for people who idle or rage quit a match.
Until those two things are done everything else is a complete waste of time and will only exacerbate the current issues even further.

I still don’t think hot join is a good way to learn how to pvp though.
It’s filled with higher ranks farming new people and switching to whatever team is winning.
Remove rewards from HotJoin and Custom arenas.
What will happen?
Not much really.
Except massive leave of players from Hotm and Gw2 overall.

No. Even though I’m an elitist, I don’t agree with punishing people that can only play quick games and don’t have time for queues.
Simply disallow team-changing. Force players to join the team with fewest players. This will allow a short “queue time” of sorts, but it destroys the toxic team stacking and chaos that makes hotjoin completely un-fun and not a viable gaming experience for the majority.
The above suggestion would NOT apply to custom arenas.
“The jealous are troublesome to others, but certainly a torment to themselves.”
Pfff, the damage has been done imo.
Last time we saw that they removed the practice button. That should be enough. People won’t find their way that easily to hotjoin anymore.

Hotjoiners will ruin what little discipline people have in unranked/ranked matches. There needs to remain a practice area. Once they are comfortable with their abilities, they eventually get sick of the flaws of hojo and graduate to unranked/ranked on their own.
Let them progress naturally not force them.

Leagues will probably be ranked only. All hotjoiners that are in hotjoin for the rewards will go ranked to try and get atleast a few divisions of rewards.
Hotjoin is such a poor experience that people either quit pvp or they become a true hotjoin hero, which shows when they join unranked.
They can practice in unranked too, and they’ll learn quicker.
If matchmaking works better, you shouldn’t notice them.

Answer to topic title : No.
All rewards to be removed from hotjoin – No rank, No dailies.
Pro’s:
Many more players will play un-ranked for their dailies resulting in much shorter queue times.Leaving matches will occur less frequently ( I haven’t ever left a an unranked match so I am assuming that dishonor is applied – if not it should be) resulting in a much better experience for all.
The matching process will mean that more inexperienced players will actually have the opportunity to play in a more balanced environment which can only grow the numbers playing pvp regularly.
Cons
None.
Anyone believe they have a good argument as to why rewards should be given out in in hotjoin/practice other than ’it’s an easy place to do my dailies’ which has created the mess that it is in now.
Cons:
- I will afk the match more frequently, especially if my team is losing.
- I will be hostile against inexperienced players for joining and I will tell them repeatedly to go play PvE.
- I will leave matches more frequently because I have a job.
- This will all ruin the experience of other players.
- It is a dumb idea to remove Hotjoin. Here is a better suggestion. Go away. Don’t play Hotjoin.

Accurate response to someone who believe that HotJoin is a source of current problems in PvP.

Murican law 2015.
I believe hotjoin should give a better feeling of fairness to help retain new pvp players, and achieving that is not easy. Something around what Jekkt said would be good.
I dont mind toxic behaviors in ranked, that’s the lot of any kind of pvp games, but it should be punished in Practice. I also think that hotjoin heroes are detrimental, stomping poor new players endlessly, but I can’t figure a way to get rid of them besides having brackets that account for both total number of games played, and amount of games played on current profession.
But the population is too low for brackets. I already fear long queue times with League…

You want a solution? Here is a solution: Don’t remove hotjoin, don’t remove the rewards.

Indeed you and many more would do PvE dailies instead and the remainder who do want a fairer game would help grow the PvP community.
Thank you for summing up perfectly why rewards should be removed from hotjoin.
@OP thanks for summing up why I am glad you don’t run ANet.
None of the people playing hotjoins or going to the custom rooms to do their dailies have any effect on unranked and ranked matches. Sane people while playing matches in unranked and ranked aren’t sitting there being bothered by people getting their daily done in a hotjoin or custom arena. It’s nowhere in our minds. People that worry about that kind of stuff are probably also worried about gay marriage ruining marriage for straight people. In other words, unreasonable people with irrational fears.
Removing rewards from them doesn’t make PvP better or the que times any faster, it just punishes people who play the game casually or prefer the PvE side of the game. In my mind there is nothing wrong with those people. They just prefer to do different things and though I have no hate towards them I would prefer they not be on my team when I que up solo because they won’t be as good a teammate as the people queuing up to play PvP. Forcing those players to do a grind to get rewards from PvP is not going to make them join the PvP community, it is going to make them resent PvP.
PvE’rs are PvE’rs and PvP is not some new concept GW2 came up with. It has been around for years and they know of its existence. They just have no interest in that type of game mode and if they did they would do it instead of getting an easy daily from the custom arenas made for them.
No. For one I find it extremely boring to sit in the lobby and wait for a que in ranked or unranked by myself knowing I could likely be fighting a premade group. And no I’m not complaining about premades, I’m okay with them I just don’t fancy the idea of fighting them when I qued alone. Secondly I like hotjoin, it’s more fun to me. I like getting to play matches with the same people and getting a chance to chat, I like the more chill atmosphere, I like instantly being able to join. It’s just more fun to me and I don’t mind getting less reward because I enjoy it more anyways. Leave it like it is, people will play what they want to play lol.
Lets get one thing straight.
The problem is not the rewards, it’s how they are rewarded.

im wit u, hotjoin is much mroe fun than queuing. unless they add RA, i’m sticking w/ hotjoin. i don’ have time to click around hotm in queue w/ my click in my hand bored.
I suggest the following be done instead:
1) Rank Points in Practice also known as “Hot Join” be lowered by 33%
Rank points are fine in practice. If you lowered it then made a cap until you could solo q hardly anyone would bother trying to make it.
2) Set a hard cap on how many rewards they can earn in a server day. I would suggest no more than 5 rewards a day from PvP from Practice. This would mean you can only do 1 tier a day from practice.
There is already a cap in hot join for the reward tracks. You can only earn 25% of a track in a given day (not including daily pvp reward potions).
Let me be at home where I can ragequit easily if I am not having a great match, then I will not go over to unrank and ranked to ruin everyone’s matches.
Indeed you and many more would do PvE dailies instead and the remainder who do want a fairer game would help grow the PvP community.
Thank you for summing up perfectly why rewards should be removed from hotjoin.
Unranked and ranked will only grow into a community of ragequitters, and afkers if they remove reward in hotjoin.
It will not teach players how to PvP regardless on how much you say it does. In fact, it will drive new players away because I will be hostile to them for being in my team.
This is summing up why rewards should not be removed from hotjoin. Unless you like playing with ragequitters and afkers.
Also, I will do my dailies in unranked. If I don’t foresee my team winning, I’ll just afk because it is a waste of time. I will double cap just so I can get my daily capture done. I will play ineffectively like I always did in Hotjoin to get my dailies done in unranked and ranked.

Not remove but limit rewards for hotjoins more.
Teszla
Not remove but limit rewards for hotjoins more.
No need to. Hotjoin rewards are already low. Unranked has 3x more reward.

I can’t even contemplate how to come up with a reasonable counter argument to this.

Why bother? It is simple, don’t remove hotjoin nor the rewards. Your proposal and argument is dumb to begin with.

wat? I have never touched anything except ranked/unranked since I started the game, had no idea the dailies were more easily done in hotjoin either.
I think most players like me, who are relatively new, go for the unranked button, because that is literally the first thing that pops into your face as you enter pvp, I dont even know what hotjoin is :S
Practice(hotjoin) gives you less rank points anyway, the system is fine as it is.
forcing people into a mode where people want to win win win, will result in less people joining , or the community becoming more toxic with elitist vs casual

Good for you – Stay where you are.
If you do happen to investigate hotjoin, I would be very interested to hear your thoughts.
