I think it is strange that hotjoin provides a better, more fun game experience than solo queuing for tpvp.

Tpvp in premades is a lot of fun, but solo join is quite bad in my opinion. You often get only 3 or 4 people on one team, a mishmash of skill levels, and premades vs pugs.

As far as I can see tpvp is really only suited to premade groups; solo join tpvp is just an inferior form of hotjoin but with better rewards The only upside over hotjoin is the 5 per team format (also in hotjoin, but mysteriously hidden at the bottom of the list so usually there are few or no active 5vs5 hotjoin servers), and the ability to play with 2-3 friends as a group (which u can pretty much do in hotjoin anyway).

Hotjoin has gotten a lot of flak in the forums, but it certainly seems to blow solo join tpvp out of the water.

Any thoughts?

Hotjoin was fun when they added 5v5 since 8v8 is way too zergy for me. And then when more than half of the 5v5 servers became duel servers, I never entered hotjoin for a long time now and only solo que in tpvp. But yeah, hotjoin is supposed to be fun. But only if you like zerging for glory farming or dueling.

Once they add dueling (if they do, rather) those 5v5’s will die out. They need to reduce the cap to 6v6 at the very least for ALL servers. Then it would be much better. And yes, those extra four players on the map do make a difference because of the size of the maps.

use the server browser for standard 8 vs 8 game.

find a game that has like 9 – 15 players in it and join in.

solo queue >>>>>> hotjoin

doesn’t matter if you face a premade or only have 4 players, that is what you should be hoping for if you want to grow stronger. measure your progress by personal discovery & performance improvement, not by wins or losses ( since both are currently meaningless both in hotjoin & tourney ).

I prefer Hot Join and agree for the same reasons.

In theory tpvp should be better than hotjoin, but in practice it is not. I find about the same level of skill in hotjoin as in solo join tpvp, except that solo tpvp is more unbalanced.

Doing tpvp as a premade is of course very good and really boosts your skill and understanding of the game . However, hotjoin is on the whole more challanging balanced and fun than solo tpvp, I really don’t see the point of solo join tpvp in its current state.

yesterday I tried solo que again… faced a full premade rank 45+ while I had a rank 1 (for real) in my team. Never again.

i agree that pug vs pug tpvp can have low skill overall, but it is still taking place in a more balanced environment than hotjoin, so people can learn better with a stronger incentive for victory.

you don’t get to fight teams & superpugs in hotjoin—that is the main reason i soloQ. i would prefer to practice fighting good players in teams 1vX than farming in hotjoin.

eg. in tourneys i can practice reacting to a roamer adding to a node fight or proper rotations when our node gets pushed, but in hotjoin most node fights start out with a free neut or it is necessary to zerg dodge. hotjoin is a completely different creature.

now, this is just me trying to make the best of a bad situation. the game is presently dead, hopefully ANet has some resurrection plans coming at a time other than soon.

I stoped doing solo queue atm cause i only face premade teams and most of the time i face pretty good premades.
So i just go hotjoin until they fix the solo queue cause all my friends now playing PvE without laddder or gems or the qp’s that you can saw off to provide something from tournaments than glory that you get in hotjoin without having to go voice and play what ever troll build you like without raging etc.

Split solo/duo from premades and add ranking or something to show off.
Like in Gw1 you saw all was about achivements (HoM) what is my achievement in PvP ?
How can i tell how good i am to others without ranking? Not farming qp’s and that stuff.
Loose and gain rating as in gw1 gvg.
There is no competitive scene of pvp without ladder.

Hotjoin is in most cases circle zerging …

Sometimes, when people start to drop out ( most likely because they finished their daily ), it is fun because its 2v2 or something like this, but thats it.

In tPvP you have a team strategy, you synergize your builds for your team, and you call & get help if needed.

Also, you have voice to set up your burst etc.

This is much more fun then running in circles and blowing all AE abilities you have on random opponents.

I’m not afraid of losing so i prefer tpvp even though i solo join mostly. best way to learn and improve is from watching premades carry out their combos and strategy. Hotjoins are best for glory farmers or PVE players who come just to clear pvp daily

I love hotjoin and try to turn it into my own little survival game by rushing the enemy zerg alone

That hotjoin is possibly the worst “fun” / casual instanced PvP I have ever played, largely zerging around and ignoring trying to win, is not my idea of fun, it makes pugs in other games look like pre-mades on Teamspeak in comparision.

The scoring system is beyond moronic in this regard, winning should award signifcantly more glory (for those that for some reason deem glory to be of any importance).

I guess the mode does not help, though that is more down to map design, other games have conquest and people (yes pugs) actually play the map properly and try to win. Take Rift for example there is a map called Codex (a lot of players favourite map), it works for pugs because three of the four points are very close and you can actually see those three points from the central point (which also ticks for more than the other points so, even for the clueless it is simple to make a useful contribution to winning, go to the center point) so don’t need to rely on communication to know what is going on and allowing players to react quicky wihout it being a laborious trek of capping/decapping from one point far off point to the next.

Or perhaps the playerbase is simply terrible.

I played thousands of BG/warfronts/warzones in other games, I should be their target audience, yet I’ve barely played sPvP since the first month in this game, as outside of the redeeming features of nice fluid combat and no gear advantage, it is simply not very good, judging by the populaton of sPvP, I am not alone in this view.

I’ve only been to hot joins once or twice ever since they added the solo queue feature. Reason being, hot join is a zerg fest, and you get players that are all less than rank 10s. Solo queue has much more of a challenge, especially when facing pre-made teams. Beating premades with a solo/duo queue gives you such a great sense of accomplishment. Not to mention, your role in a team is tested to a much better degree in tournament play than it would ever be in hot joins. Of course, hot joins is easy glory, especially for a thief like myself.

We were discussing that solo que is broken, and IT IS obviusly broken. A full pug team, even if they are good (a rank 1 CAN’T BE GOOD) will lose FOR SURE against a full premade, no matter what. You learn WAY MORE farming hotjoin all day long instead of wasting time in this kittening bullkitten solo que system. Now shut the fock up and go play SOLO QUE, I bet you’ll disinstall after the third try, when you’ll face again a full premade with a rank 1 in your team.

I sometimes go solo just for fun…and for sure if i have a bad team and they have a good premade they are going to own us…and that’s completely normal, i don’t care if i lose when i go solo…i know it’s just a matter of luck, if i want to be competitive i go with my team…if i just want to have fun (Or testing something) i go solo and accept defeat without problems….so what’s YOUR problem here?

I can answer that question. Hotjoin is better than solo queue tpvp.

All the things you said were good about tpvp I agree with, but it only applies to doing tpvp as a premade. None of those good points actually apply to solo join tpvp.

Solo queue is just a less balanced, slightly more boring version of hotjoin. I rarely see strategy or skill beyond what I see in hotjoin (reverse is often true) unless I do tpvp with my guild/friends (which is not solo queue!).

Let me stress though: tpvp with your guild/friends is a totally different story (and a very exicting one).

You’re probably rated low enough where there are still a lot of people who leave, have no idea of team strategy, etc. As you move up in rating you’ll see these issues less and less.

This would be true of any similar game (e.g. LoL). But of course the issue with GW2 in comparison is its tiny playerbase in sPvP, which is possibly the reason for the skill range disparity you would see in a team of solo q’ers. It’s really hard to say at this point if it’s the match-making system itself or the small playerbase that is the primary cause. It may help once ANet implements visible ratings which will deter people from afk’ing/leaving and giving more incentive to attempt to win the match by coordinating with your team.

I’m actually surprised that many people have defended the status quo; unless I have at least four guildies/friends with me I find it really frustrating to step into tpvp. Of course the merry-go round of spvp hotjoin is also frustrating at times, but I think that is a lot to do with the one game mode (as Sylosi says above) and maybe 8vs8 being too large a number for these maps.

However, I think if there was some way to fix the issue of some players not showing up for the game it would make the solo join tpvp experience much better.

Or maybe after thousands of games I’m just bored with the one game mode and have more fun messing around and setting my own agenda in hotjoin when I can’t play with friends.

To be honest the last 10 solo que pvp 2 team tourney matches have been really close, but I seem to lose them and even if matches are really close if you’ve been on 5 game losing streak you just want to win and it doesn’t matter how good of a game it was… you lost plain and simple.

I am not interested in those things, I just like playing good challanging pvp.

Anyway, I tried again today with the solo join tpvp and have narrowed down the problem to the cases of players not showing. I had a whole string of matches today with full 5vs5 teams and it brought the experience up to the level of an active 5vs5 hotjoin server.

There is still something lacking though-it just doesn’t differentiate itself enough from hotjoin 5vs5.
