Serious sPvPers,

When you finish a SoloQ match, win or lose, how do you evaluate your performance?

What things do you measure yourself on?

Do you expect that you should make your team to win even with two of your five players AFK at base? Obviously not.

Just wondering how other serious players deal with the imperfect system that is soloQ.

I think if you’re a competent pvp’er you can accurately gauge the following:

-Were your rotations good?
-Were your mechanics good?
-Did you capitalize on enemy deficits?
-Did you win the 1v1’s you should have won?
-Did you adequately support your team?
-At any point, were you the reason the enemy took an advantage?

I typically ask myself questions like that for self evaluation. Of course I go more specific, especially against stronger players. It comes not only down to what did I do well, but what did I do to thwart the other good players on the other team?

Hello,

I think the criteria depend on the class and role you play during the game.

These days, I use a condition/control warrior, quite mobile, mostly as roamer and sometimes offtank. As such, I consider I’ve made a good game when I could:

  • properly analyze the tactics of the enemy team, providing good indications to my team mates and acting upon them,
  • get through the whole game without dying once, i.e. engaging and disengaging in an appropriate manner,
  • decap enemy nodes efficiently, and protect them from a single enemy,
  • pull 2 enemy players into fighting for a while, so that the team could better manage the rest of the map,
  • help the team win a group fight (doing warrior things here).

I mostly define it by how effective I was capturing/defending and thus acquiring points for the team

It depends. I almost always play side point bunkers so I’ll use that:

How consistently did I keep my point capped?
Was I able to successfully pressure far/mid/objectives?
Did I win my 1v1s? If no, was it a build vs build issue, or did I simply get outplayed? And if it was because of my build is there something I can do to change that?
How often could I draw 2 or more enemy players to me, and did I win/survive a satisfying amount of time?
Was I communicating to my team on how they could help me (like calling out when 3 people come to 3v1 me so I can get a rotation)?
Were my deaths actually #Worth or was I dying because of stupid decisions?

Stuff like that. Basically, was I playing well in fights and was I at least pulling my weight on the map.

My team is making me run hambow right now (ugh, dont even like war that much). So I evaluate my self with the following.

Playing aggressive on point during team fights without overextending. (ie: trying to hard for a kill, taking unnecessary damage, wasting stability at pointless times). aka make sure I’m making use of every moment I can deal damage within safe means.

Stacking might on team if I’m babysitting the point while they run off the point to finish a kill.

Making sure if I get into a 2v1, or a 1v1 I know I won’t win, focusing on surviving the longest possible time for the highest amount of points generated to team and enemy cap prevention.

Combining my CC with teammates CC to hold target controlled for the longest possible time.

Interrupting enemy stomps.

Using stability correctly for clutch moments of finishing and ressing; This is very much different than just using a stability everytime an enemy is down, because with proper team CC with much shorter cooldowns can usually doing a trick. This means being VERY aware of what classes the enemys are running, and knowing the possibilities their class may bring and being able to predict what could happen at this moment.

Rotating on and off point with another teammate to prevent unnecessary damage tanking; and peeling for each other while swapping.

Having a general plan with your teammates during certain situations(yes, I don’t go without a round trying to discuss a general tactic during soloqs.) and did I follow it correctly. ie: Was I supposed to rotate home if 2v1 occurs at home? or was the engi supposed to go? etc etc.

Did I make a false call during game? ie: thief can you take a look at far? oh snap we needed his help at mid, and its to late.

Of course, it depends on what class and role you are running. Simple things like “did I notice my teammate died” or “did I noticed the thief was attacking my home” or “did I land my skills properly” shouldn’t be evaluated, because these are addressed outside of the team mode, and is simply a lack of familiarization with the game (you’re still a noob and shouldn’t be ruining peoples rating in team arena. Go play soloq or hotjoin until you get your personal skills down.)

I main a boon/support guard bunker in SoloQ. So, I typically critique myself on the following:

  • Did I win my 1v1s (especially against glass cannon builds)?
  • Did I successfully defend any points I was tasked to defend by my team?
  • When in 1v2+ situations, did I last long enough for my teammates to arrive and tip the balance?
  • Did my arrival to ongoing combats tip the balance in my team’s favour?

I think those are the core elements of this build. As others stated above me, things like being aware of the general map situation, paying attention to chat, keeping tabs on decayers, etc. are all important, but because those factors hold true for every player regardless of class or build they’re going to be constant.

Of course, one very important thing to note is that you (or I) won’t win every fight every time. Sometimes, we can do everything right and still lose because the opponent was simply better or luckier. So if for example I lose in a 1v1 against a glass cannon warrior, rather than beat myself up about it I simply consider what happened and attempt to modify my play style accordingly to prevent such an occurrence from happening again.

To answer your second question, if two of your players are AFK at base, then you shouldn’t expect to win. However, I believe you should always try regardless. Go for decals, try to avoid zergs and hope the AFK players come back. Occasionally they’re AFK for a legitimate reason (baby crying, important phone call, etc.) and are not purposely taking advantage of their team; such players tend to hurry back as soon as possible and then apologise for their absence. Real life gets in the way occasionally.
