Q:
How Do You Gain Pips From a Loss????
Personal score doesn’t matter, to get pips from a loss you have to put actual points on the board.
Still only a small consolation prize for being outmatched.

I gained 2 pips from a win last night to complete the first tier in the first division. I just assumed it was bonus that everyone got.

Oh hi Chaith. I just thought I would put up a screen shot. I am Odoreye. My points were good enough to be second on their team. This is fairly discouraging over all if personal score has nothing to do with pips as your individual skill and impact in a match still won’t help you progress.

You get two pips for win, when Matchmaking thought you will mostly likely lose given match.

That would be a really stupid concept. That’d mean that Anet don’t play their game…
It’d encourage more nobrain gameplays …
I don’t know but you CAN LOSE PIPS FOR WINNING.
Helseth just lost 2 pips on his stream for winning a 4v5 game with a DCed player on his team. LOL.

Yeah the over all match was not great. The point I was trying to make was that the game measures players performance through personal score. You can’t help who your team mates are sometimes but you can control your own performance in a match, more or less. If pips are only based on how your team performs, then there’s really not much point in trying. You’ll lose the pip either way.
And losing pips for a win? That’s just weird.
Also I appreciate everyone’s responses so far, but I’d really like to hear a dev weigh in on the topic. I have often observed a disconnect between expectations and perceptions of the community vs what the devs feel like they’ve communicated. I don’t think at any point we’ve had a dev sit down and give us the absolute black and white explanation of how pips work.

Asking for a dev?! What have you smoked to ask such a thing here?!
And FYI, personal score doesn’t really say how much you’ve helped the team. Personal score isn’t a pure indication for someone’s skill or his usefulness. It’s always been like this in GW2. Thus, it wouldn’t make sense to give a pip for the highest scored player of the defeated team! If it’s loss prevented you can be happy, but even that I don’t find it normal and totally unfair to the others.
I don’t have the time to fully explain why it isn’t a real indication but another time, or someone will do it.
But just think, would you like to see behaviors like 3 people standing on a point to cap, in order to have the highest personal score possible? I was doing this, 3y ago in hotjoins… which weren’t ranked games and it’s not beneficial for the team, don’t you think?

Hm…. Does that mean Wakkey and Phantaram were totally out-performed because they had such a pitiful personal score? The scrubs were probably camping capture points the whole game! :-)
All joking aside, your team would need to score above 200pts, I thinK 300 to get points from a loss. I’d be happy with 100pts against that team, though. ahem…

No, no, the team score (104-500) needs to be more like (300-500) for you to gain points from a loss. He, he. Good luck doing that against Ajured, though. I am going to bribe them with gold if that ever happens ;-)

I understand how personal score doesn’t always equal an objectively good performance. It is however the only way the game actually grades performance outside of win or loss. Again whether it’s a good system or not, it’s the only system. To be fair also if you look at the spread of personal score there is a natural break. The Mesmer and I had personal scores that roughly matched the out put of the opposing team. After that there is a significant drop in personal score that would indicate the other three team mates had a harder time competing in the match.
If your league ranking progress is personal, why is it crazy to think the game would have some way of recognizing and rewarding personal skill/contributions?
Also I don’t know what the threshold for team score has to be. I’ve had losses of 500-430 and still lost pips.

Does the entire team get points? Or only the highest score one?
You didn’t understand my point. This is really stupid system. This shouldn’t exist in a supposed competitive mode (ranked). I could understand “loss prevented” for some cases… but this?! it’s pointless.
I am not sure if it is a good system, but if the matchmaker royally hoses you and pits you against World Champions, for example, it compensates you for putting up a good fight. If you score < 200 points, you loose a pip. 300 points you gain a pip. I think >400 would net you 2pips. It works something like this. Not positive about the actual thresholds, though.

I give you that’s the only system. But it’s a bad one and was never indicative. As solo/duoQ, there’s enough people wanting to roam etc (it’s kind of normal if you launch a game alone), I don’t want the point keepers to be punished for holding a point.
It would be totally stupid to give a pip to the highest scored ones. But loss prevented, I could understand, to take away frustration. And even like this… it should be for the entire team.
I totally understand the frustration you got with teammates doing badly (I’m the first one who gets angry with bad teammates). But with loss prevented, you should be happy. It’s very selfish from you and the “take a pip because you scored well but your team lost” thing is really encouraging selfish behaviors and not sane for the game’s health. Specially in a ranked mode, I wouldn’t want that.
A dev mentioned in reddit that what happened to Helseth wasn’t intended and they are looking into it.

The comment still makes no sense..
This party-wide penalty is to prevent someone from intentionally disconnecting and preventing a loss for their friends. However it doesn’t make sense if you win, so we are looking into making this only affect losses.
Why should my teammate intentionally disconnect to help the enemy team and in which situations did that happen?
It also happened to Chaithh I think.. he ‘luckily’ only lost one pip for a win.

You lost to the Abjured! That’s very okay, nearly any other team would too. Those guys are world class elites.

That is answered in that very reply thread within the reddit.
I had a game…. lost 500-~420, won a pip… without being highest score. Had another game, lost 500-~420 too, lost a pip like it’s intended to.
And Helseth one is really hilarious xD
I don’t get this system.

MM predicted you to lose badly. Your team got enough points to get a pip.
