How about a proper team ladder
You know, in the summer hype of 2015, I thought that Ranked Queue will only be for team but they did a top 10 guild challenger stuff that no know look or see.
This would had really, really make something for the competitive scene.

The problem here is how difficult it is to actually build/teach/practice with/maintain/schedule times for an actual 5 man team. Even when people are willing to do it, they get burnt out fast and require breaks from the pressure. Running a serious 5 man team can feel like a part time job in a hurry.
I like your idea but for GW2, it’s a good thing that guild league allows you to substitute players in at will, when you need to. Also, running a ladder like you mention would put even more pressure on scheduling. It’s already difficult enough to get all 5 on to sit down and play at the same time but when you have scheduled matches where there are now two full 5 man teams who need to be online at the same time to finish their match, you’re putting a lot of scheduling mandate in to this and most of the matches will result in no shows, dodges or just teams requesting to be removed from the competitive roster.
In my opinion, the guild league is setup perfectly. It’s competitive yet casual and allows players to schedule their own times to play. It also acts as a qualifier for the ESL. If the arena-net team did anything right it was the guild league ladder. The algorithm’s match making even works well for full 5 man teams.

It can be any 5 players from the ones you entered into the competition, so if there are no shows you just swap that guy out. The point was you can only use the guys you registered in your team or guild. In the years I participated in the ladder we rarely had any problems, the people that wanted to play were often always able to.
