Q:
How are the teams determined in solo q?
A:
Nope, your fears are true. It picks the first five people it can find with the closest MMR ranking, these are typically the best players. Then it picks the next five it can find, which are typically lower-MMR ranked players because the population playing SoloQ is so low there just aren’t 10 players of similar rank.
There have been MANY threads showing this with screen shots. ArenaNet has not given a date as to when they will get around to mixing up the two teams randomly before starting the match.

This should be fixed in the next PvP drop, which may be next month, not sure.
We’ve got even more substantial matchmaking improvements on the radar, but those won’t make it in until sometime next year.

Oh boy, what a poor choice. And yet shuffling has been proven to work umpteen times in any physical education class. I would prefer it over random team building, but that would be ok, too.
Thanks for answering.

Sometime next YEAR? Well hell until I’ll find a premade. Or just go play something else. BUT ANYWAYS.
Since you’re online atm, wanna duel? I won’t give up until you say yes and I test your abilities.

I know, it sucks. They will be coming along with a lot of backend changes and improvements that need to be completed and then thoroughly vetted.

But will you reset the leaderboard? That would be great
I think system MMR should give first player to team A, then second player to team B. Third player to team A, and thourth to team B.

Doing this biases the outcome in favor of team A.

It’s unfortunate that the matchmaking element was overlooked before rolling this out.
It’s turned off a lot of players to a new feature that should have been a big plus for the game.
I love the great intentions of Anet and the game is actually one of the best MMOs out there, but it’s still frustrating to imagine how many more people would be solo queing (or still playing) if the matchmaking and ranking weren’t so warped.

And what about the supposed new pvp modes such as “death match” or “king of the hill”?
Guess my quote “gg making gw2 an esport” still stands until maybe next month or next year or maybe even 1-5 years after next year.
Yeah sadly its this way .
I waited 4 months for solo Que , posted a lot of topics on splitting premades from solo players.
Then the long awaited day came of the patch with solo Que implemented. I was so glad.
Till i actually played a few hours and smelled how faulty the matchmaking was.
Haven’t done any solo Que since it was known how the matchmaking worked .
( 5 players against 5 weaker players …. ) felt like a big slap in the face of a lot of solo players.
It really felt like anet wanted to split premade and solo que , BUT didn’t want there to be any fair play in the matchmaking.
Fair play was the only reason why people wanted a split in the first place.
So it resulted in a lot of " no way they that stupid " reactions of the pvp population.
And it has been like that ever since it was released.
( it’s not like fair play is a priority…. /sarcasm )

Why does this kind of trivial fix take forever? Other games would have had it hot fixed in a week.

oh well justin, here is the whole problem in anets patch politic. i can understand somethings take longer to implement then others. but hold them back to release a full stack at once is stupid if u know how urgent it is. and saying “we dont want interrupt your gaming experience” is just an excuse. we get interrupted every 2 weeks and every hotfix for pve. so it doesnt count. publish your fixes in these patches and stop waiting for more. you hasnt the time to do this.

In this case it’s because they are part of back-end server changes that can’t be released piecemeal.

You guys really are slow to patch things in general and you shouldn’t wait to release together so you can have longer marketing update page, but it’s nice we get more dev replies so thanks.
Am I to understand that the OP is complaining that he is losing to teams of higher rank than his own?
Working as intended surely? Low priority problem, I agree that slightly more even matchups would make solo queue a tiny bit more enjoyable but I don’t think this is something that resources should be allocated to…
This is about the MMR and leaderboard placement, not PvP rank.
This has been said better a bunch of times before by other people, but here goes: Stacked teams are not fun for anybody. Nobody learns anything from a curb stomp, nor is it fun for either side to win or lose by 500-100, which is how the majority of games end up with the current match making. Sure, if you’re new to winning it might tickle your fancy for a few games, but after a while you realize how pointless facerolling is. After that most people gravitate towards something more meaningful, like other games or sticking your hand in a toaster.
Fixing the match making should be a top priority, right up there with better PvP incentives, tournament infrastructure and getting rid of the current god-awful meta.

No you misunderstood.
I posted this after several totally imbalanced games in a row. Most of them ended even 500 – <100. I was both in winning and loosing teams. Being in the loosing one, I tried to pull all my tricks and combos, but nothing helped. Being in the winning one I button smashed and the victory wasn’t in danger at all. Hell, I problably could have just auto attacked and let my teammates do the job.
I don’t think you would call this as working as intended.
Instead I want to feel my skill progression, how a good performance of mine has a outcome on the match, even when its just a slight one.
I don’t know when you play, try 7am CEST = 1 am EDT.
OK that does sound excessively imbalanced. Games like that aren’t really fun for anyone. But I think the main reason it’s happening is low population tbh, and splitting the game between team and solo queues didn’t help with that…

Really? It’s one of the only problems that is entirely in Anets hands. The rest is mostly down to terrible players.

This.
Matchmaking and 4v5 SoloQ is a FAR more serious problem than just about anything else in sPvP right now.
We’re getting the fix for these issues to you as quickly as we can.
The additional matchmaking improvements go beyond what has been discussed here, and will take longer to implement.

Will we have to wait the same amount of time for rewards to get people to play PvP
or ways to deal with 1x/2x/3x/4×5?
I think the matchmaking could be mitigated if there were just more people playing

Justin, I like the way you respond to posts. You’re more transparent and it feels like a human instead of pasted community manager policies.
I guess I can’t understand as to why leaderboards / PvP match data weren’t setup in a manner that could allow for piece-wise fixes. A sensical backend setup would have had results data architecture, rating results calculation, and matchmaking algorithms split. Only the matchmaking portion would require a tweak; even random assignment of 0-9 (which could be argued as having +/- to the above bias) would be better than what is currently in place and should be easy to implement.
Anyhow, I guess we have an answer now and can only wait.

I think the time span clearly demonstrates the small size of the staff supporting PvP. I get it. The money is all in PvE, and it’s a business, after all.

Truthfully ask yourself the following questions:
Do I expect people to sit around and wait for a full year for a matchmaking implementation that should have been implemented from the get-go? (Note: On a game that was loudly marketed as an e-sport, but lost a majority of it’s competitive players within the first year. )
Does the public perception of our PVP development staff seem positive or negative? Do they think we allocate enough resources to the right changes or not? Can we ride this until next year? (Note: Every game has it’s share of doomsayers and whiners, but is there any truth to it?)
Can we compete with the new generation of games that will be released in a full year?
Are the responses of “great feedback guys!” starting to look incredibly robotic?
As far as I can tell a gaggle of drunken Luchadores throw darts at a wall.
You think match making is imbalanced? lol, thats just the tip, You ever heard of syncing que? yea thats something ANET will not comment on because I guess it just cant be fixed.
Premade In Voice channel vs Solo Que players…

I’m not going to feel bad if someone moves on to something else, each person is going to do what they feel is in their own interest. One of the great things about our game is that you’re always free to come back and try things out at any time.
If you’re asking if we feel pressured to get these changes out to you as quickly as possible, then I would say yes and no. Yes, we definitely want to see the game improve sooner rather than later. No, we do not feel pressured to release before the changes are ready. Personally, I can’t wait to share the changes I’ve been working on with you guys.
Does the public perception of our PVP development staff seem positive or negative?
I know it can often seem negative here on the forums at times, but we do get positive feedback as well. My biggest concern is that the more constructive members here will be drowned out by people venting their, often valid, frustrations and concerns in less productive ways.
You ever heard of syncing que?
Should be practically impossible once the matchmaking changes I’ve talked about make it your way. Purposely losing a match will still be a concern, but it will always be a concern.

Firstly, thanks for taking the time to answer some of the questions.
This game’s combat system is easily the best of any MMO I’ve ever played. It’s incredibly frustrating to see such a polished engine with such a crappy framework. It’s like having the engine of a Ferrari in the body of a minivan. Yeah, it runs like a beast, but who’s going to drive 200 mph to drop kids off at soccer practice?
We’ve been dropping off the kids for a long time, it’s time to move on. Let’s pull the engine from this kitten heap, and get some real changes. Be transparent if you are going to force us to wait a year. Give us something on a fairly regular basis. Even if it’s just “we worked on this, it failed”, it’s better than not saying anything at all.

This guy is awesome. Honesty. He’s doing what he can to try to improve this game, and if it isn’t moving fast enough for you, it is unfortunate, but he is a realist and isn’t going to tell you “Just hang on, we’ll get there, ‘soon’.” If you can’t respect that, I dunno what to say.

Best explanation of this game that I have seen. The core of the game is fantastic, but it released with PvP in an early beta state and it still isn’t where it should have been at release. There is no way this game should have released with 1 PvP game type, No ladder, No solo que, No functional matchmaking. It was a business decision, I understand why it was done, but it should never have happened. The GW franchise had rabid PvP fans that were expecting a solid PvP experience when this game launched, and not applying sufficient resources to provide a product remotely near to the expectations of that fan base was penny-wise and pound-foolish. Hopefully they can right the ship, but time is running short if it isn’t already too late to stop the bleeding.
