The Dhuumfire thread
How come gw2 is not popular in esports?

i don’t need to say more…………
I’m not coming back, not that you care.
It isn’t Esports because Anet doesn’t want it to be
Plain and simple.
What Esport games have:
1v1/2v2/3v3 gamemodes
Large map selections
In-game ladder system
In-game Tournament system
In-game Tutorial videos displaying class mechanics and/or map mechanics.
Saving and viewing replays
Switchable equipment/trait templates (add a 5m cd..)
Stronghold should have came out years ago along with 2v2/3v3 modes but this game only had a fixed budget. They chose to spend their resources on PvE rather than focus on PvP. Obviously PvE was the smarter choice.
There’s a large PvP player base Anet have yet to tap into. It’s easy to implement an immersive PvE environment but even harder to deliver a competitive pvp experience. Currently there’s very few pvp items here that cater to these players. The heart if it being Leaderboards and Gamemodes.
Rank: Top 250 since Season 2
#5 best gerdien in wurld
It’s too hard for anyone who doesn’t know how to play the game to watch a match and know what’s going on.
That’s with every mmorpg. Most rpg’s can be quite complex compared to a 4-5 skill set moba game. This game really isn’t bad as far as rpgs go.

And MMORPGs have never been eSports successes. WoW only managed to do it for a very short time because Blizzard shoved so much money at it that they artificially created a scene which died the second they came to their senses and stopped wasting the money. MMORPGs are designed with PvE as first priority, the exact opposite of what eSports do.
because the mongoloids that would watch it wouldnt understand a kitten thing that was going on

I’m surprised no one mentioned that the game isn’t free to play.
Money.
If you are a professional or aspiring video game pro, this isn’t the game to get rich on.
This is hardly the issue. Only a handful, if that, of players in other games are actually “rich”. The salary for competitive players in other games are extremely low and the majority of their money comes from tournament winnings, which very few earn due to the high competitiveness. The rest of the “pros” earnings is from streaming which most players find themselves having to do. Professional League of Legends streamers make more money than professional League of Legends players (assuming they don’t win Worlds).
The only games that offers more for prizing is Dota 2’s The International (and only The International) which is mainly funded by the viewers themselves. Even that isn’t enough to outlast a pro streamer.

It’s not just Dota 2. There’s other games out there that offer better prizes.
It is an issue. Look at some players in the tournament scene. They disappear and show back up once WTS qualifiers are coming up. The incentives to play weekly aren’t there if you have grown bored of the game and not just playing because you really enjoy it.
And your point about LoL streamers making more money than LoL tournament players isn’t too big of an issue, as I’m sure if you are highly skilled and even the least bit entertaining or educational you could garner support on Twitch in those types of games.
This isn’t at all a gripe about Arena Net. They can only be as generous as their resources and budgets allow them to be.
I would add that the fact our competitive scene in GW2 is so tiny, and it’s really hard to find four other players who want to tryhard together and make that team last for long periods of time.
I commend you for your efforts in helping it grow
Do you think $141k is rich? The top income number is coming from a guy who has played since 2007. That’s 9 to 10 years. That’s like $14k-15k a year. CS earnings are REALLY low compared to other games, so bringing up CS isn’t the greatest idea. SC2 has more winnings.
Try 3 years. CS:GO hasn’t been around for 9 years. So, yeah, your math is wildly off base. That’s over $40k a year from tournaments. Not “rich”, but middle class money. Who knows what the guy got from other places.
He’s been active in CS for 9. Read up on him.
I used to run the Academy Gaming tournaments for GW2.
Money.

Lies… anet had the full on goal to make conquest “esports” from the get go. In the end though we all knew that it would fail (if you didn’t your a foolish cookie).

Even so, that’s nothing compared to LoL and Dota 2. Regardless, the point is that money isn’t the issue. It’s complexity of the game that doesn’t allow for outsiders to understand it in a short amount of time. Also, it’s not F2P.

As others have said:
1, Lack of updates whilst they focus on the expansion/living story
2, Their “feature patches” just remove features (solo q, mmr leaderboards, raid on cap, ranks up to 80, paid tournaments, 8 team tournaments, duelling whilst queueing, pve whilst queueing)
3, They lack a coherent direction – they move a few steps in one direction then a few steps back. They have been poorly managed as a team imo. Someone at anet needs to sit down and map out the ideal features for their pvp and work towards that with a global vision in mind. Not just ad-hoc changes which fit into no overarching strategy
4, No balance changes to keep things fresh and interesting
5, Very powerful specs which are frustrating for most to play vs (turret engi, longbow ranger – I think most agree on these 2)
6, A catering to 30 dudes who play for their college fund rather than to the masses who bought the game. Too many funds get directed into these tournaments.5 million people bought the game and they give away REAL money for their pvp tournaments. The result? 5 teams show up (the same 5 every week) and around 500-900 viewers even on guild wars 2’s official channel (a tiny audience). In short, remember the pax tournament nobody cared about? Yeh they delayed balance changes for about 6 months to not effect this stupid thing. That cost the game alot as people gave up on it. Too much catering to the few people prepared to base their weekends around this game in tournaments that nobody watches.
Quoted for people to read.
While the argument about some specs being extremely OP is arguable to some, the rest is spot on.
It has been reported that internal team direction is lackluster by current/prior developers/designers and whoever follows the pvp scene closely can confirm that they cater only (95%>) to the selected few.
Seriously?
GW2 at the moment have 8+ years in the development!
1 game mode and 7 maps, half of witch are garbage.
No build templates.
No separate queues.
They could not even make 1 map a year. It’s a joke. PvP still in beta.
(edited by Yakez.7561)
1. Lack of consistent balance patches
2. Conquest is boring and almost impossible for casters to commentate on
3. Not F2p
4. Only one game mode
5. Lack balance patches on the reg
6. 3 years have gone by and you can count on one hand the amount of changes to maps/gamemode
7. Viewers would have no clue wtf is happening mostly due to lack of clear objective
8. The amazing combat system is really only appreciated by the players playing the game i feel like, not the people watching.
9. Another huge reason is because of the queue problems making this game boring to watch on Twitch. Twitch is EXTREMELY crucial to a game going esports.
10. LACK OF TENDER AND CARE GW2 NEEDS.
11. Lack of balance of the patches being balanced and stuff
My frands! Instead of just rattling off reasons why this game is stinky, maybe we can all offer reasonable suggestions for improvement! After all don’t we all want to see the game get better! Aren’t we all one in this my frands! I’ll just use my previous post as an example!
Terrible game mode! The only esports MMO game mode is arenas but they refuse to implement it!
Well that’s easy! Regardless of your stance on how esports arenas actually are, you cannot deny that it’s easily the most popular form of MMO PvP! The objectives are simple, the maps are small and easy to make, and there’s a huge playerbase just waiting to combine arena PvP with Guild Warts 2 combat! Plus it’s esportz!
Tiny population with zero growth!
More free trials! Guild Warts 2 is a good looking game with nice combat! I’d wager most people who played the previous free trials went on to buy the game because of these things! Plus no subscription fee for a once super hyped MMO game doesn’t hurt the cause!
Tiny competitive scene with zero growth!
Incentivize players to get better! What reasons do players have to get good at this game when they can just play easy, braindead builds like shoutbow and turret Engi and power Ranger and farm their dailies and the leaderboards which doesn’t reward player skill at all! Put in a better leaderboard and institute a rank system based on MMR! Players who advance ranks can be rewarded with PvP only armors, weapons, titles, etc! Plus you can make tournaments separated by rank! This way new bronze teams don’t have to face world champion teams and become disheartened and quit playing competitively! You don’t match a high school basketball team with the New York Knicks and then reward the Knicks for winning the game! That’s just silly!
Awful to watch!
Put in a slider in the options menu that tones down all the useless flashy animations and effects! Casters can tone them down a bit to make things easier to see for the viewers! Maybe add in a free camera mode when spectating! Also conquest is just annoying and boring to watch in general!
Bad balance with 6 months in between patches!
Self explanatory! Maybe create test servers where a select few players can play on and test new changes! That way we can avoid Anet releasing something just awful like Skyhammer and subsequently take over a freakin year to make minor changes! Also Skyhammer is still terrible! “Oh guys! You’ll love Skyhammer! We tested it internally and you’ll love it guys! You’ll just love it!”
Don’t take 6 months to shave! Don’t be afraid to revert changes if they’re bad!
Hope that helped! Wahoo! Bye frands!

Also the lack of balancing principles is amazing. Like Skull Crack instant cast is overpowered but not Overcharged Shot at it’s current state?
You’re kidding me right? Epic fail, zz. Z-axis teleport on a tanky class like Ele too? Real? Just no principles. None.

Courtyard is bad enough. Arenas should never come to GW2 with Anet’s extremely poor and largely infrequent balance decisions. Additional game modes means more balancing which they’re already terrible at. The two go hand in hand with one another. You should never have one without the other. The current game mechanics are still littered with bugs and blatant balance issues. This is the reason why GW2 pvp has stagnated.

This game will never get away from brain dead builds because that’s just how the game is designed. That and Anet can’t even make one decent ladder system, nevermind a multi-faceted ladder composed of different leagues like bronze, silver or whatever.

PTRs are nice for companies that actually balance on a regular basis. Anet would need some serious reforms to how they approach balancing and designing their game for them to even consider making PTRs.
It’s fun sitting on the forums talking about how this game could be improved as though Anet reads any of this or as though the game hasn’t been out for almost 3 years and still suffers from the same garbage it has suffered from since its release. lololololol.
I’m surprised no one mentioned that the game isn’t free to play.
Starcraft 2 says hi. F2P isn’t necessary for “eSports”, you just end up with a smaller potential viewerbase. In the case of SC2 though a much higher % of people watch competitive which makes up for the otherall lower player numbers.
this game just needs More game modes like 2-3 each of them with atleast 2-3 maps
and a working Ladder system.
and a reward system that rewards you with Unique stuff that only can be get from PvP.
and from here we can start talking about esport and Actual balancing.
-Total War: Warhammer
-Guild Wars 2
I think the biggest issue is that without playing the game you wouldn’t understand a lot of what is going on. I don’t watch streams for any game but when I spectate matches it is even sometimes hard for me to tell what people are casting because the game is fairly fast paced and you can’t really see what abilities people are using unless they are a clicker. I personally don’t really understand why anyone would watch someone else play a game though.
1. Downed state-this can never be balanced right.
2. No 1v1 modes, you cant /duel people, which makes the game INCREDIBLY hard to learn as a new guy.
3. The only 5v5 small team PVP game mode is Conquest, which implies sitting on points. You fight for your right to….sit there…
4. sPVP is actually player vs player vs map. On khylo you have the trebuchet, which has no place in a low scale fighting enviroment. In some maps you must focus too much on staying on the map and not falling off bridges/ledges. Skyhammer is a failure, and should not be ingame, especially in a competitive enviroment such as spvp.
5. If you happen to fight against your counter build 1v1 then cya brah, you cant do much, even if your opponent is much worse than you.
1. Balance updates are too slow. Any esport game has much more frequent updates.
2. Conquest is not viewer friendly. There are not many big moments. Casual viewers don’t know what is going on.
