Last week I was rank 269 in solo queue, this week I’m unranked. The reason is the 40% win rate I had, as opposed to the 67% win rate the week before that.
I would like to blame it on bad team compositions etc. but watching people like Sizer easily climb up the ladder means that some players are good enough to consistently carry their teams. Why can’t I? I am not wondering why I am not Sizer, I know that, but it should be enough to stay in the top 200.

At the moment I play a d/d Ele, sometimes d/f using the 4 0 2 2 6 celestial build. I go close all the time, since I don’t trust anyone else to actually stay there and hold the point and since both builds are awesome for 1v1 situations. There’s no class I fear and I dare say that I win 80% of my close point duels.

Nevertheless, I feel like the outcome of the game rests entirely on the shoulders of my team. Most lost games go like this: They lose the first mid fight, Guardian bunker settles in, they never recap it, gg. On some maps I try my best to jump into mid fights and get off a few rotations but there’s usually at least one mesmer or thief who will instantly go for the free cap, making me retreat back to close. Long story short, what happens outside of my little close point kingdom is out of my sphere of influence and that just sucks.

In solo q you can’t expect to do mad split rotations so it always starts with 1 close rest mid and maybe 1 escort for close. If this initital assault fails, things often stay that way.

So my question: How do the top 20 players do it? How can they consistently win games despite having leavers, afk’ers or single digit ranks in their teams? Is it a matter of class choice, do they spam party chat all the time with OP strategy advice?

Yeah when i was running close bunker i never had the ability to influence the fight. But dont know about this silly matchmaking …. but 90% of the time i ran that, the team lost mid 4v4, 90% of the time …. Even if i decided to help mid after cap … it was already lost by that time. Thats why i stoped running close bunker build. Only time it mattered was if they decided to go for close and far, but at my time playing ,that never happened. But it worked magicly when i run it with my friends party (prety much on equal skill level).

Also there are classes that can carry better. One is good thief, who can punish enemy for every mistake, kill solo roaming player, fast help close, decap far, kill their galss canon, kill far bunker …. all in all it can easily turn the tide. The other are good bunker guardian and warrior, for keeping point or winning the teambattle. Some could argue also good elementalists, new d/d, could do that in sologames. (i guess switching between classes-what is needed, also helps)

Thats why i would make wild guess all top solo players run thief, guardian and/or warrior most of the time and none of them is speced for close def.

That was my guess as well, that they just don’t guard close but roam around on what’s needed. Ele might not be the best class for that though, since most dd and df builds revolve around sustained dps which gives the enemy plenty of time to react or his teammates to come to his aid.

If you want to win reliably roll a Guardian.

Guardians are the most vital class for every comp and have been since day 1. Going up against a team without a Guardian of your own puts you at a severe disadvantage.

Yes, other classes might be more overpowered and stronger at XYZ. But when it comes to winning, nothing is more decisive than having a Bunker Guardian.

First of all it depends on the map but its easier to carry with bunker builds(pref Guard). Mid fight at start is really important, you can influence the match more by contributing to the first encounter. After you win mid bunker it that will help a lot more than sitting on home for most of the match, due to the fact close is the easiest point to decap. I could say more but cbb.

You’re doing it wrong…you should go like “pro” ones, que up in odd hours when there’s little chance to get good opponents and sync up with mates on ts (They said it’s fixed but believe me that if you do that the right way at the right time it works..you just need someone with very similar mmr) Top soloq works like this since it was released, or just don’t give a kitten to ladder like most ppl do.
Btw odd hours tournaments work well in tque too..probaby even better. Easily went around top 100 soloq in 1 hour on first account at 4am just to try that out, too bad i can’t really play during night but tested it some weeks ago and worked perfectly. There’s also an even better way used by many time ago, during night when noone’s around you just sync up with your first account and 3 friends on second account they don’t care about…the ones in your team play on ts, if they get on the other team they just afk making it 3-4v5 (Remember all those complaints about 4v5 matches and ppl afking in base? Yeah…right…), i can’t really write here who kept using this method for months but many old top 20 did that, when you have thousand of hours and thousands of tournaments in pvp messing around in high ladder you eventually know some of those “pro” triks…and many probably still do. There’s a reason why ladder is broken and noone cares bout it after all. Better choice atm is to go pug giving no kittens to ladder and stuff, it’s waste of time anyway.

First off, if you from 67% win to 40% in a week you probably don’t have as much experience as you think.

Having different builds (and classes)that you are familiar with helps tremendously.

Also, sometimes there is literally nothing that you can do to win a match because the comp and/or the players make it impossible. My advice for those situations (if you’re really concerned about rank) is to play selfishly. i.e. only engage in fights you can win, and don’t be afraid to run like a mofo

Soloq, where it’s 5v5, 4v5 and the super sweet aww kitten 1v9’s!!!

I agree with Emap, a good mid-bunker guard or roamer thief are the two main classes who can carry a group to a win that would have otherwise been a loss had you played a different class.

The state of solo Q atm is that people just zerg, very few games are played with tactical roaming/bunkering in mind. So if you can solidify one of those roles for your team by playing the correct class it’s a huge + 1 in your teams favour. Close second is signet/stance warrior, not really a bunker or a roamer but stacking faceroll tank+dmg specs works stupidly well in GW2.

I run a backpoint ranger in solo and team queue and I think maybe your issue is that you aren’t playing the role properly. You never sit home point. Instead you go far EVERY time it is empty and push mid when you can tell your presence will influence the fight. Your goal is to make it so that their homepoint guy can NEVER leave his point while you can leave yours.

Beat their homepoint so bad they have to send two to kill you, then your team can manage the other points 4v3. It is a little finer than what I’m getting at right now, but since you main guard I think the issue is probably just your rotations. It is when I play ele or guard.

Don’t protect home point. I know, I know—protecting home point is good. But you are too important to your team to miss any teamfights. That’s right. You have to be in everything.

Ele is a good carry profession. You have mobility, teamfighting, and solo artist capability. Carry the teamfight at mid, race to close point to hold it 1v2 because two of your teammates just lost a 2v1 there, decap far because your team wiped and there was nothing you could do. Intercept a straggler and kill him off point. Win another teamfight, etc, etc.

Be everywhere and do everything.

You should never, ever lose home point. You should also never lose mid when you capture it. It’s all about counting, if you see that their home point guy is moving somewhere, then you should move too.

However, to carry you have to be a bit better than an average player, and win teamfights with equal numbers. So if you are 5v5 at mid then you should win that. If you think your team can hold a little bit 5v4 (still in case their home point guy moves) then you just capture far and help mid. If their home point guy is pushing to your home, just kill him, because you want to carry, meaning you should be stronger than him.

If you’re going to try and hold home without leaving it much to help out elsewhere then you’re gimping your team at mid. If the opposite team is all at mid and your still at home then it’s a 4v5 at mid. Unless your team is competent, outnumbered fights in solos are bad news. I personally suggest to allow others to bunker home or at least keep eye on it. You should be roaming more, as support roamer is the role of a d/d ele. You need to help out at the fights both at mid or side nodes.

Thats exactly how i play my d/d ele and I am in top 100 solo q most of time. Play hard and smart
