How do I climb out of silver?
You’ve answered your question your self. You have to duo queue, or be able to 1v5 the enemy team and win. In order to climb out of silver.
Solo queuing in this game and Paragon, is a highly punishable offence.
But at least I admit it!
PoF guys get ready for PvE joys
Duo queue with someone you work well with. It may take some losses to find people to duo with.
If you really are gold caliber then duo with someone who is around 100 points higher than you are now. You should win more than you lose and because of the rating differential, you will gain more for your wins and less for your losses. But do keep in mind that the situation is reversed for your teammate. So you’d better bring the wins!
What’s your build? play something with good damage and mobility, never try to climb as support.
What’s your build? play something with good damage and mobility, never try to climb as support.
I may not be knowledgeable enough to say this but I think its the other way around at low ranks. I’m around 1400 games played mostly on my thief:
Thief
611
49.26%
Elementalist
237
51.90%
Ranger
173
53.18%
Guardian
129
48.06%
Warrior
122
45.90%
Revenant
84
51.19%
Engineer
36
47.22%
Mesmer
9
44.44%
Necromancer
2
50.00%
(the only support class with lower % than 50 is engie whom I just picked up a few days ago)
And the reasons why I say this:
99% of the games the initial split is 1 home 4 mid on both teams and in 80% of that 99% the team who takes mid first wins, because:
1. nobody never leaves a mid fight even if they are losing.
2. you can play smart and rotate well, decap/backcap stuff and whatnot but the average IQ of the team simply does not qualify them to be able to rotate around a good teamfighter duo/trio —> if they lose a 3v3 or 4v4 they will engage the same 3v3 or 4v4 every time they run into enemy players. they never make the conclusion that if they cant win a fight with sheer force it may be alittle more helpful to try to outrun them or something other than just being slaughtered every 30 sec.
In higher tiers where people know some stuff about rotations, class matchups, class roles, etc… Then I do believe that a thief or a mes can be extremely effective. But in lower tiers players are like little robots. They always do the same, and never listen. Winning the first mid fight will give you a 70% winrate in bronze and silver imho.
You don’t. I was placed in almost Gold3 and now dropped to Silver3 cause I guess condi is love, condi is life (powercreep), and I am just constantly loosing matches. Even if I win some I loose more. Gonna finish last chest and drop this season for good, maybe even next one if they don’t fix this kitten.
Maybe duo with someone will help, I don’t have ppl for that.
Your ability to climb in current system depends on either 1. cheating/exploiting or 2. duoq with someone really good or 3. ability to win 1v3 fights.

I solo queued plat on a necromancer without even using soul reaping. You don’t need a duo to get out of silver.
OP would do well to post some gameplay vids so we can tell him how to improve. But I’m betting that the OP is more interesting in getting his salt vindicated than to actually improve.

I am relaxed. I’m legitimately trying to help the OP. In order to give the OP useful advice we need to know how the OP is playing. Otherwise there isn’t really much to say other than “go watch some high level streamers and git gud”

Well i got gold t3, trying diferent buids and observing the winning ratio. more tem 5 loses streaks = something wrong in ur build/playstyle. But yeah, in silver the trash random unluck factor(afks, Dc’s, etc) is very bigger.
if u real good, u should try any “carry” build: tankness+mobility. that why i swapped the meta necro to a minion necro.
Silver players almost are very meta depedent, they didnt know how to counter non-meta or hybrid builds. Thats basically why i get out of silver using weird builds than meta builds. Above this level is the ppl that can synergize a build/traits with their playstyle.

I’m playing condie chrono with scepter/shield staff right now(sometimes sword/shield staff )
I use 180 condi power signet, blink, portal, moa and well of eternity/healing signet
And I’m watching Helseth’s guides
I’m seeing lots of condie revs lately,is it a better class?
Not really, condi chrono carries harder, but condi rev is easier to play.

But actually on a serious note, if you can describe what problems you run into, I am sure there are many of us willing to help better understand what is going wrong and how to better approach your games.
Hi
As most said. Duo with someone you can work well together. I tried it solo and gave up. I climed but it was like 100 games for a half division. This season i am in gold and it´s the same.
Greetings
Wolfgang
Most of the problems I run into are:
People rushing mid on their own
Far suicide when enemy respawns are coming
No idea about map mechanics
People chasing 1 guy off point
People who dont finish/rez downed
More than 1 going home
Afk’ers/dc
Bots
And also matchaking matching me against platinum + players at silver level(yes I checked their mmr)
I make mistakes too sometimes but I don’t try to 1v4 enemy
I had a match yesterday where everyone clicked without needing to communicate.
No one stayed mid to try to take it when it wasn’t going well (not sure anyone died). We almost seamlessly swapped to far/home and just sat on the nodes for a minute collecting a lead. Then back to mid and lost far, but we decapped far almost as soon as they took it.
I’m not sure how to achieve that kind of synergy consistently without communication. So I’d say the best way to climb is communicate effectively. In combat, saying “back” can help not let people die.
It is also helpful to have portal support for home. You should be able to bunker up home against a decap if you keep an eye on the map. If you can guard home while supporting mid it takes a lot of pressure off your team. People function better when they aren’t stressing about being constantly backcapped.
Also help your team pick a target. So many teams don’t bother with targeting. You need to know what target is the biggest threat and which is the squishiest (not always the same one). Depending on how the fight is going a target call may win it for you. Also do this for downs on your team. Target them if res is possible and give your team cover for a res. Chrono shield is good for that.

I actually have done better overall playing solo than with a partner. The only exception is when my partner was a silver tier (I’m Platinum) and we have won about 70% of our matches. But I started this season in Plat after going 7-3 on my placements, all solo
Restore that which was lost. And all shall be as one.”
I had a run of bad luck during placement matches this season. Normally start aroundgold 3 to 3 but started at silver 2. Was able to climb up to gold 2 in solo q.
Advice is this. There are some matches you can’t win. Just accept that. There are also some matches you will just cruise through. But there are a few where it comes down to exactly how well you play. Win those and you will advance.
I’ve also noted the game is incredibly streaky. I’ve had win streaks of 6, 7, and 12 games. Also had a lose streak of 7 games. During all of those I played same build and same competency. No way it was just random luck. Matchmaking does seem to favor one team each match. Best thing to do is keep playing when you’re on a roll and stop and wait a day if you start losing.

I don’t agree, mesmer can be really effective in low ranks becouse you can add mobility to bunkering. You can win 1 vs 1, you can help midfights and have a little bit of bunkering ( much more than a thief ) and on the same time , if you play smarty with portal you can outrotate your enemy team. I am not saying that mesmer is op or that but i am saying that in lower tiers it can be really effective. For example , if i don’t cap close i let portal down at start so that if team dies on mid i can try to go far to decap or help mid, just for saying a stupid example .
I was a high MMR player when I was in NA, I transferred to EU and currently play with 280+ ping. As such I’m in high gold at the moment but I think I could do high plat if I try hard it.
I found silver harder than gold, I think the way it makes you break out of silver is you have to be able to carry an entire team consistently. It’s much easier rising the ranks of gold than silver in my experience.
I agree with a lot of things here with my experience and wanted to give this thread a bump in order to bring it some more attention.
I brought this up in the GW 2 reddit in hope of getting a discussion about the current PvP state there and what we like to see with the expansion.
Posting a link to my Thread here; https://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/6qr2l2/hoping_for_new_pvp_life/
I’ve been placed in Bronze before, and got to 1498(ugh) so far this season so Gold 3 and hovering around there.
I’ve been Diamond In SC2, Diamond in Overwatch, Gold in League (hardly play it, too toxic), and Gold here (I think it’s fair to say I’ll make it to plat/legendary if I invest some more time, but we’ll see if I go crazy first). I like to think I have a healthy approach to improving myself, and I always ask myself what I could have done better and try to ignore the randomness of bad team mates or other circumstances.
This game will really show you how Trump got elected. It will show you why people don’t want to vaccinate their kids. It will show you the deepest, darkest corners of ineptitude and you have a choice: Play CondiChrono or bathe in the fires of the mud smeared hordes of PvE heroes.
I’m sort of kidding. If you can actively determine where you can cut your losses the most under pressure…. if you can determine who to focus and keep them from throttling your buddies who don’t know better at mid…. if you can just 1v2-3 people with mender engi… you will climb.
This assumes mechanical skill is above your peers, and trust me, decision making is going to be the real element in helping you climb. (I recommend people to 1v1 every chance they get, I recommend them to take outnumbered fights in WvW, and really create opportunities to say “What if I did this instead?” Question how you play and don’t make excuses for losing.
Your personal movement from where you are at is so specific to so many variables of how you approach each game. My only advice I can truly give as a lowly Gold 3 Scrub is be a kittening Zen Master. Be calm, decide quickly, change your mind quickly and be sure in your logic.
Always Roaming
First of all. I do believe that there is smth very wrong with either the MM system or the game rules which tend to snowball most games into stomps. As someone already said, lots of matches are decided before the starting gates even open. So it is like a coin toss. But there are also those close games and this is where your personal performance will matter and can make a difference.
Opinions will vary. But I had best results in silver and gold by using something tanky like support ele or tanky engi. I noticed one common thing for many players in bronze-silver-gold (of course not all of them). They do not read the map. Or at least not analyze it very well during the match. So what I often do is take something tanky and go cap a point which is currently not defended. More often than not this will prompt 2-3 people from the enemy team to come to take it back. At this point my intent is to hold it as long as possible and hope that the rest of my team will put that extra time to a good use. My goal is not to kill anyone. Hence I am loaded will purely survival skills. I just dodge, heal, kite, whatever it takes to stay alive as long as possible. Lots of players in lower leagues will not understand that chasing me around the point for a long time is detrimental to their team. It’s not a very satisfying way to play but I noticed I climb most when I use it. Now I don’t know what happens above platinum tier but I don’t think that is your concern atm.
you climb out of any bracket by being better than the people on your team and the people on your opposing team. People in silver will make mistakes that is expected of silver tiered players. If you don’t belong in silver, you will be able to make up for their mistakes and win the match still. if you can’t do that, then you won’t move up. A big issue i see with people stuck in a bracket is that every loss is never their fault. it’s the fault of everyone else on the team. And sometimes that’s the case. But you should never look to blame others for why you loss. instead think of what you could have done differently to win. How you could have overcome those mistakes. And also, step outside yourself realize maybe you are also the reason the team loss, or at least a part of it. Just think of what you could have done differently. Blaming others is the biggest detriment to growth.
I’m someone that has worked my way up from silver to platinum at least 10 times this season alone. When i play my mesmer, I can consistently make it to platinum. When i get my alt classes, i drop back to silver. Always. It’s just where my skill level is at on those classes. So it is possible to make it out. That is how you do it.
If solo queuing, play a class that has a consistent impact on the match without requiring specific outside support.
Alternatively, start duo queuing with a pair of solid classes/builds.

That is easier said than done unfortunately. You know, i’m seeing the same mistakes for years. I used to be top100 in the very old leaderboard, then i didn’t play a lot with the new system and varying around high gold, and it’s still the same happening and that Anna has described above.
I’m having games where i keep drawing on maps and ping where help is needed, and still have players going far over and over, or pushing lord at 200-200. Probably half of my loses are due to such situations.
Thanks all for advice, but this just keeps happening:
whenever im about to break out of silver (like 1 match away) MM just keeps sending me on loss streaks
almost all of the matches are blowouts xD

This is good advice. You can’t expect to carry every match. Chances are if you could do that, you wouldn’t be asking how to climb out of silver anyway, right? But if you’re consistently playing better than your teammates, you will start to climb. Bad luck is only factor in the short term. Play enough games and your skills will make the difference in enough matches that you’ll start to climb.
If that isn’t happening after playing many matches, you have to admit that luck probably isn’t what is holding you back. You need to do something differently. If you’ve tried tweaking your build several times and nothing seems to work, then you need to take a closer look at how you can refine your game.
I started at the bottom of gold 1 in this, my first season. I found myself stuck at the top of gold 1 for weeks, seemingly unable to break out of it. So I tweaked my build, using the meta build for inspiration. Suddenly I found myself climbing gold 2. When I hit a wall again, I started to find players I worked well with to duo queue. And I climbed again. Now I’m bumping around at the top of gold 3/bottom of platinum 1.
So what’s next for me, since I seem to have hit a wall in low platinum 1 (1534 rating, season high so far)? Well, I’m new to PvP and I only know how to play elementalist (and only d/d at that!). So I figure my next step is to learn some new weapon sets (focus, specifically, as that’s the meta), watch some videos, and talk/play with more experienced players.
I take every opportunity to talk to players higher in rating than myself. For instance, yesterday a higher ranked platinum player called me out during a loss. I didn’t get angry about it. Instead, I whispered him after the match and asked for constructive criticism. He calmed down, apologized for calling me out, and gave me some good advice including specifics on how my class should be played and where I might have made some mistakes during the match.
I also joined a teaching opportunity that was posted on the forums. It was a couple of top 250 players in voice chat, answering questions and sharing tips including positioning, kiting, even things like spots you can use line of sight or get up on top of things that can obstruct attacks or prevent teleport skills from reaching you.
Above all, just do your best to be patient and look for opportunities to learn. Getting angry and blaming your failures on factors that are out of your control does nothing to help you improve. Remember that!
I was silver at the start of season then climbed to gold. After that I went on a massive loss streak.I fell to mid silver. Now I’m high silver but if I win 1 match I lose 1.So I’m stuck at the same rating.I got matched against players with legendary rank yesterday. How do I break out of this cycle?I don’t think I belong in plat or legend just give me my gold back
:(
And my playing didn’t get worse in fact I think I improved.I can win matches at gold level when I duo queue with a gold friend but he isn’t always online sooo…
I’ve solo queued from silver 2 in season 5 to just barely in plat 1 (1,516 SR) this season. I pretty much only solo queue. Even though I’ve won barely better than 50% of my ranked games.
Ranked Queue: 608 Games Played. Win Rate of 51.81%. (from GW2 efficiency)
Your ranked placement is ultimately based on who you beat and who you lose to, and not so much how much you win/lose (as long as its generally over 50%).
The only constant across all your games is you, so ultimately that’s the major factor.
Play a class your good at (actually are good at, not think you’re good at). Look at what your team is lacking at the beginning of the game (roam? support? DPS?) and swap to that IF YOU’RE GOOD AT IT on a class you’re familiar with. Use unranked to get familiar. Look at GW2 efficiency. It gives you a list of classes you play in PVP and some stats.
Class/Games Played/Win Rate
Thief / 1767 / 55.40%
Mesmer / 853 / 53.34%
Guardian / 314 / 57.01%
Warrior / 158 / 55.70%
After looking at that in season five I stopped playing Mesmer. I simply wasn’t good enough at it, especially after that many games played, and I’m clearly better at thief/guardian/warrior.
Now I heavily switch between guardian (if I think we’ll be squishy)/thief (if we need roaming +1)/warrior (if guardian/thief are both taken).
If I’m on my thief and we have another thief I swap to warrior or guardian, depending on what we need. During off-season I unranked with all three so I can stay good at them and try different meta/original builds simply to get used to them. It pays off eventually, and I just have to not fall out of plat (my goal for this season).
Play a class that needs less skills, like ranger: you do dmg with pet so need nothing to do and if you have some basics, like rezzing or healing you will do more then before.
or play warrior, there you can choose: high dmg that kills enermie hopefully fast enouth you dont need to time the defence, or high defence and try to not use 2 defence skills at the same time.
Well if your allready that good that you can win every 1v1, try to use some of your skills for the team, reserve management => you have 50p your allies maybe 20 but enermie has 24p and 27p at the 2v2. using one supportskill and you give from your 50p, 10 to the allie (40 you allie 30) and he can beat with you the other team^^ or weak the enermies with dmg debuff so on => you have 30p allie has 20p but each enermie loose 10p (14 and 17).
Normally the matches are close on the playerskills, means if your bored cause you win but the team don´t, you could carrie them by using skills for the allie matchup
