How do you play with your mouse?
If I had my right hand on my mouse, that means I have to use my left hand for my skills but then I can’t move my character. See what I mean?
No I don’t really see what you mean. I can press one of the wasd keys while pressing 1-4. Doing this while holding right mouse button lets you turn as fast as you want.
Since you’re not using your mouse, I assume you backpedal. This puts you at a huge disadvantage. But you already mentioned that I think.
I also have keys bound to the button on the side of my mouse and my scroll wheel on my mouse. They are easier to reach than any key on my keyboard because my hand is already on it.
by remapping all of my keybinds to things that can be reached more easily while moving freely, and by having a mouse with 4 side buttons that I can map skills to.
If you’re interested in specifics, I put movement on ESDF and then moved my skills from 1234567890 to…
AMWMR ZMMXB* (M= mouse)
and then moved F1F2F3F4F5 to Q234N
*I skip from X to B because C is stow weapon, and V is turn around

No I don’t back pedal, that is stupid. The thing is, I do use my mouse but rarely, usually to use ground target skills and to turn when not in combat. But when I’m in combat I take my hand of my mouse.
You say you can keep 1 finger on WASD while hitting 1-4 but the way I see that is awkward. So I would have my index finger on D while my ring finger is stretching just to hit 1 or 2. I just don’t see how this is efficient.
Use a gaming mouse all of my skills are bound to the extra keys on the side. No need to ever remove your hand
Hello OP,
I cant use the 123456 skills while also using WASD to move at the same time.
I find this annoying to play and while using the 1234567 you always stuck in walking 1 direction (often to the right) it just doesnt play well..
So yeah i bought a mouse with 12 buttons to the side :-P
So i have all my weapon skills + some utility skills / target / Dodge all bound to my mouse
I use Caps lock for weapon swap
And QER are for the 789 utilities.
Only 1 problem left. the 12 buttons are tiny.. so i often misclick or use 2 at the same time XD.
Good luck!
You do not need any fancy gaming mouse with over 100hundred buttons. But if you feel that could be easier for you, well , go for it.
WASD (or ESDF whatever) to move, rebind A and D to strafe left and right not turn, use the buttons all around WASD like RFCXQE123 ,whatever works for you, for your abilities and then use the mouse/rightbutton to “look around” and move the camera.
It just takes some pratice and then you are good to go.
My keybinds usually:
WAD – (forward, strafe left and right)
S – dodge
QERFCX1234 – Abilities
alt+QE1234 – more abilities buttons if needed
Shift – Swap weapons
I would really suggest you to start using the mouse in GW2 from now on, even if at the start it’s gonna be a struggle! (maybe start by doing some pve with it) you will only gain benefit from it.
If you think it’s too hard to use keybinds and use mouse at the same time you can start doing baby steps, like use WASD to move and Mouse to move camera/target and click your abilities with the mouse.
Then when you have gained experience you can start to add keybinds for abilities to go along with the movement buttons.

I use a gaming mouse but not with a block of buttons on the side.
I remaped movement to the key arrows and did put jump/weapon swap on the nuber pad to hit it with the thumb. I did put targeting up the movement arrows. On the mouse i have: 5-9 on the left to use with the thumb, 1-2 top mouse left, 3-4 top mouse right and F1/F2 on the latch between my fingers. I bound 0 on the mouse wheel.
With training this setup alows me strong reactive play like my forefinger hittng 3 when i see a DH nee down while i still have other fingers for other keys.
Shure this doesn´t help if you have a standard mouse but it´s competative ….
my mouse is literally just for camera control (and ground targetting/clicking things),
i have all my skills bound to keys on a speedpad (nostromo N52te)
I have a Logitech G600 and do ANYTHING with my mouse. Left hand is free for drinking, eating, smoking …
I use SDF (like you’d normally rest your hand on a keyboard when typing) for left right and forward. Since you should use backpedal rarely I put that on C. This leaves the whole QWERTY line of characters free to do my atacks with. And I have a logitech G502 which lets me weapon swap by pusing the mouse wheel left, and closest target by pusing it right, plus all the function keys an engineer needs are bound to it.

i know what you mean
i wasnt in exactly the same situation, but ive been playing a mmorpg for ages where you control your character with mouse so my left hand was exclusively reserved for using skills
therefore transiting to these games which are flooding the mmorpg scene for the past years with gw2 being one of those games, where you have to both control the movement and use skills with your left hand has been difficult for me
what i can try to help you with is:
1) you definitely need a gaming mouse with extra buttons for such mmorpgs (hence these mice are so expensive and increasingly popular) to reduce the load of work your left hand has to do, especially considering that for most people left hand is less agile than right hand
2) forget using f1, f2, f3 etc for your skills, rebind them elsewhere, either to mouse buttons or to keys around WASD. F# keys are way too far away from WASD so you will lose the control over your character whenever you try to use them
3) using a mouse is definitely important, constantly holding the right mouse button allows you to immediately react in the direction of threat/enemy while turning with keyboard can be much slower
4) rebind strafe from Q and E to A and D since you will use mouse for turning your characters, strafing is important moreso in pvp, also that will allow you to bind skills on Q and E which are important buttons since they are close to WASD
Additional advice OP, just hold down the right mouse button 24/7 until moving with WASD + paning the screen with the mouse becomes second nature to you.
Set your skills to default at first, then keybind them appropriately like the above posters
OR
Invest in a gaming mouse that has, literally, 9+ buttons on the side for the thumb to press. For some one that has 0 muscle memory for gaming with a mouse, this is probably the easiest solution for you.

copypasta here:
Hello!
There are two different keybinding methods:
First one is called “reach”: you use the ESDF for moving. You can easily press YAQW and RTG and SHIFT+RTG buttons. Easy combinations: 10
Second one is called “modifier”: you use your little finger to hold down SHIFT and/or the CTRL key. You can press Q, ERF, SHIFT+ERF, CTRL+ERF buttons. Easy combinations: 10
Also never forget: the easiest keystroke is the SPACE. So now I always have the SPACE+modifiers binded.
Currently I’m using:
Q: weapon swap
ER: weapon skills #1 and #2
SHIFT+ER: weapon skills #3 and #4
CTRL+R: weapon skill #5
SHIFT+SPACE, CTRL+SPACE and CTRL+SHIFT+SPACE for three utilities
Redragon Perdition mouse Num pad: 4 profession skills, healing skill and the elite.
Extra button: dodge
If you don’t have a gaming mouse you can move the attunement bindings to the number keys.
You will be surprised how smooth a combat can be…
For example on every profession I put the “mobility-teleport” skill on CTRL+Space… it’s like a second nature now.
My Oh-kitten button is the shift+ctrl+space usualy (like condi-remove or mist form or stone spirit… you name it…) The only thing I have to do is stretch my little finger out and hit Space…
And this keybinding improved my PvP-WvW experience a lot… Sure I have a MMO mouse now with 20 buttons but I still use the old keybinding for the most of the time…
I just got used to it…
Good Luck!
Left hand -> wasd and 1,2,3,4,5, keys default while
-E swaps legends (playing rev);
-legendary skill (0) to Left Alt;
-Q to skill 7
Right hand (using Razer naga Hex):
-auto attack
-Skill 6,8 and 9
The things is -> find a close range of buttons/setup and practice a lot of pvp with it many many hours till it become a part of your body.

You can use a gamepad (like a Razer Orbweaver) that has a D-Pad Joystick for movement using your thumb and then have all your skills keybound to the pad.
Using WASD to move, and your 1-4 keys for skills is nothing new. It’s common in many games because it’s easy to do. Some games opt to default bind abilities to QERFCXZ - all those around WASD - because some players find that easier, too. What this means is, no, it’s not too hard, but also that it does come down to individual preference.
Some players like WASD. Some move their movement keys over to the right, so they become ESDF, so they have more letter keys easily accessible from that position. Some move their movement keys up to WQES so they are closer to the number keys which are bound to their skills.
When I started this game, I went up to about level 30 on my first character using the keyboard for everything at first, and then just for movement and my mouse to click the skills. All because I did not know you could hold right click to steer your character. Using the keyboard to turn is so much slower and awkward. You hurt your reaction time, your awareness, your ability to direct attacks toward a target etc. With the combat system GW2 has, not using the mouse makes the game less enjoyable.
I advise rebinding your skills such that you can easily reach them from the hand position that covers your movement keys, and bind each such that the same finger won’t be needed in more than one place at once. Then, work on using these new binds. Stick to them. You’ll feel worse and want to go back, but that’s just because you haven’t muscle-memorized them yet. Your memory and muscle memory will be conflicting - memory says use the new binds, but your more immediate reaction from muscle memory will be to the old binds. Once you update your muscles to be on the same page, you’ll see a significant improvement, and be happier for it.
Edit: Your keyboard layout is also a factor. For example, some keyboard keys are larger, or have keys spaced further apart. A very common example is the difference in F-key positioning. If you use the F-keys, you may notice 3 different starting positions for that row when you change keyboards. The first keyboard I used (which was a standard free-with-computer keyboard) had F1 in line with 1, the second (a membrane gaming keyboard) had F1 in line with 2, and my current one (mechanical gaming keyboard) has the F1 above the space between keys 2 and 3.

You could consider buying a gaming mouse.
Most of the buttons that you would use would be on your mouse.
Otherwise try bind most around you moment keys and use them with that hand (both movement and abilities) and the remaining buttons on your normal mouse.
Gaming mouse with at least 4 buttons will make your life easier, most gamers have a gaming mouse and some have considered it to be as essential as a controller for a console when it comes to action based MMOs.
If you do not have a gaming mouse nor can afford one with at least 4 buttons accessible via your thumb. (don’t get anything less than 4 for your thumb if you do intend to purchase one) You are still able to play depending on your class.
A suggestion would be WASD as your movement, which is standard. Be sure to rebind A and D to strafe left, and right.
Q E R as your utilities,
12345 as your weapon attacks
and F keys for class mechanic skills. <- which unfortunately can be cumbersome depending on your keyboard.
However you have they keys ZXCVGT along with “Shift + anykey”, “Alt+Anykey”, and “Ctrl+anykey” to work with to bind “take” and “set target”, along with your doge, heal, and elite.
If you are able to click your mouse wheel that can also be a useful function.
If you are on a mesmer who has kittenter skills or a guardian who has 3 virtues you may find it difficult to find keys to bind.
Personally my set up is
WASD = move
QER = utilites
1 = skill 1 (can be auto attack)
2345 = class mechanic
C = Heal
V = Elite
Mouse wheel click (mouse 3) = Doge
4 = skills 2345 on weapon skills.

All in all though you should find a setup to turn with the mouse.

Hi, i use my own configuration. I have a MOBA gaming mouse (means no additional keys) so i binded everything to my keyboard:
WASD move
12345 basic skills
QERT heal/utility skills
F1F2F3F4 default profession mechanic
CV elite skill/F5
ALT dodge
TAB target.
The only downside i experienced with this setup is that i sometimes ALT-TAB out of the game. Otherwise it works great for me, i hit diamond last season soloq
Oh, wow! OP you should really invest in a G600 gaming mouse. It has 12 buttons on the side and 6 on the top. This way you can keybind all your skills including target, untarget, stow and draw weapon. I play Druid, and don’t think I could survive without it. How do you untarget to leap away and control your pet without using mouse?
Illustrious Exhausted Primordial Legendary Druid, and Mesmer for fun

Uhhhh no. Getting to Ruby is a grind but getting to Legendary is not. You actually have to be good and know how to play. I was just lucky cuz I play thief which doesn’t really utilize the mouse unless you are using SB. I played one hell of a thief and would probably reck most players. But to say Legendary is nothing but a grind tells me you are simply full of salt.
I no words have…
“You actually have to be good and know how to play.”

I was for movement, r for heal, f for dodge, 12345, and shift plus r f c and g for utility and elite. Shift is really easy to press.

Every friend I introduce to the game asks the same thing and I laugh at them for a while as they imagine me rapidly contorting my fingers to mix elites and utilities into my combos. I don’t think any high level player plays with the default keys (how do they expect us to reach 5-0 is beyond me).

All it would take is for you to win 51% of your games and to play a ton of games and you will eventually hit legendary. So yes it’s still a grind.
You can think I’m salty all you want… I never made it a
goal to make it to legendary. I simply don’t play enough to reach the number of games it would take even if I had won every game I played this season and I’m perfectly ok with that, perfectly happy to participate in AGs and do my thing.

The issue here is that you don’t understand that the criteria for maintaining that 51% is the difficult part. That’s like saying an amber can keep playing like an amber and hit legendary if their win rate is over 50%. You have to keep improving to maintain that 51% (or make a premade with the previous meta cheese).

surely you can grind it. my pal is a flawed but decent player and plays flawed builds, and he got to legendary. he advocates a lot of bad rotations too. but, he plays in premades and has a stupid amount of time on his hands to play gw2.
I never left emerald due to having a lot of other things to do apart from pvp, but I played a lot of games vs full diamond and legendary teams due to who I partied with. they were better sure, but not that much better. it’s much more about games than skill.

My binds:
E for interact.
Z instead f1.
alt+2 instead f2.
alt+3 instead f3.
alt+4 instead f4.
1-4 and mayus+1 for weapon skills.
Q for healing skill.
F elite skill.
Mayus+2, R and C for utility skills.
My left hand is always in the left of my keyboard ^^.

In a way it gets easier once u get higher up. Since teammates tend to rotate better there is less need to carry. Where at lower end teammates sticking to 4vs2 fights in middle is quite common forcing me/ you or whoever to solo a multitude of enemies.
Good you say? Without mouse you played at 60-70% of your max potential at best. It just shows that proper rotating, positioning and knowing when to engage and when not to is more important than playing at the top of your game mechanically. So if youre talking about good in a mechanical sense….definitely not.

WASD
1-5 for 1-5 skills
q + e for utility 1 and 2
z – b for F1-F5 skills (never liked to alt+ or ctrl+ stuff)
Mouse: heal, dodge, elite, defensive utility #3
95% time when fighting in PvP my right mouse button is pressed down for movement.
Re-mapping you keybindings to fit your play-style is always a good option.
That and getting a mouse with more then 3 buttons.
Use key binds or get a gaming mouse. I am using a Razer Naga gaming mouse and it is awesome, really took my gaming to a new level!
What you are doing might work for PvE but will put you at a huge disadvantage in PvP. Use your mouse to turn your character by holding down the right mouse button and moving your mouse. Use WASD to move forward, backward and strafing. Then map all your skills to custom keybindings that you feel comfortable using.
In the beginning any of the options will feel weird and unnatural to you and you might play really bad for a few weeks. But the more you play the more comfortable you’ll get and soon you’ll play at a whole new level!
Hope this helped!

If you are playing reaper, you really don’t need a mouse.
Can get a MMO Mouse like http://gaming.logitech.com/en-us/product/g600-mmo-gaming-mouse or other similar mice from Razer and Corsair.
Also use the Action Camera. I use to keep up with the Mesmer and attack them when they come out of stealth.
This way you’re hands aren’t over taxing the left hand and not over taxing the right hand in trying to keep up with your skills and so forth. And if you play other games, you can use all 12 skill slots that they have and key it for the additional bars by using Shift, Ctrl, and Ctrl + Shift for the skill slots. Yeah, I can’t honestly play GW2 without an MMO mouse so addicted to it
I have a Crazy layout .
movement
W,A,S,D,q(strafe),e(strafe) this extra two button movement lets me Angle moving forward while turning the mouse for a Full Circle around a target and all i need to do is double tap my movement keys to dodge .
for the rangers pet , i have all the commands key binded R = f2 , X= recall , Z = toggle attack/passive
Mouse button 4 = Attack(this is so i always have a Thumb free for a quick Pet redirect using this and Z i can control the pets position to keep it out of AoE’s using Targets away from the main target to redirect the pet in passive mode.
Mouse 3 = 1x Utility skill (normaly my stun breaker or Hard CC (like Muddy terrain or Glyph of tides ect part of the damage combo.)
mouse 1= Manual click/point (if my fingers are too busy with movement keys + pet keys, this allows me to Free up my mouse for Aoe attack like Barrage and Muddy terrain for a quick Mouse 3 Ground targeting)
and abviously 1-4 are still in finger reach .
G= auto loot > Loot ALL , F= Res/single item pick up.
Yeah with my setup F1-F5 is Ctrl + 1-5… That way you can use the MMO mouse to do all that… and in GW2 ‘=’ key is set to toggle action camera so that I can toggle it on and off on my mouse.
Also the scroll wheel when pushed is used to stow my weapons so I can fake cast some skills like signets and a few shouts.
and on Logitech MMO mouse you have an extra right mouse button, that can be keyed to act like Ctrl key.
