Q:
Since the current rank finishers will eventually become unattainable, I figure it’s time to get my dolyak and possibly wolf finishers before that happens. The problem is that I only have, at most, about an hour a day to play, and I’m concerned that I won’t be able to make it before the changes are implemented. But I could be overreacting.
So my question, as suggested by the title, is this: How long will it take me to get to rank 30+, given that I’m currently around rank 14 or 15? I know my last rank seemed to take forever to get, but then again, I’ve been playing PvP casually and intermittently since launch. For the sake of calculations, estimate about a 50% win rate, I guess.
A corollary to that question: Which would be quicker for the ranking up process, hotjoins or tournaments? My typical routine is to form a party with my wife, submit our two-member roster for the team queue, and play a hotjoin until it inevitably pulls us out right before the win.

Yeah, I know. I just wondered how much of a “long time” would be needed to do this. If I would have to work hard at it for the next 8-10 months, I might find that discouraging. But I have little basis for comparison, so I thought I’d ask the community.
Regarding my math…
I didn’t write it down at the time, but I think I did my math by estimating two hotjoins played while waiting for each solo queue match, averaging 50% wins for each, and 7 minutes per match. Clearly, this is just a ballpark estimate, but depending on the game types played, the numbers ranged from 72 to 110+ hours.
So, in short, it’s feasible.
If you only have an hour to play a day there is no way you can achive r30 before dec10. Doing a lot of hot joins maybe 5 hours + a day might get you r30 in a around 2-3 weeks from r15. Will be way shorter if you choose a roamer class that can get a lot of kills.
I took a break from the game at rank 23 or so back in February. I came back in June and have been playing SoloQ for about an hour a day since then.
I only recently reached level 30.
So no, unless these changes need 4 months to roll out there’s no way you’ll reach rank 30 in time.
i think we still have enough time.
lets look at the blog post again.
Ladders and Seasons
The final stage of our rewards overhaul will be ladders. Players will be divided into divisions and will earn points for playing to work their way up the ladder. At the end of a season, players will earn PvP-specific rewards both for their ladder standings and for their level of participation. Ladders will replace existing leaderboards.
Once ladders are implemented, ranks will be retired. To honor the effort that players have put into the rank system, existing players will be able to keep all unlocked rank finishers and will earn a special title based on your rank to show that you were there from the start. Variants of existing rank finishers will move to the ladder system and will be used to show your current standings on the ladder from season to season. The original finishers will not be earnable again.
Ladders are the final step on our rewards road trip, and as such, they are a long-term project. Infrastructure needs to be built, new rewards need to be created, and other pieces need to be in place before we get there.
tl; dr
ladders will not be implemented at once.
expect months before everything is in place for sPvP ladders.
this is what i think, at least.
It shouldn’t take long. Maybe 500-600 hotjoins. The ladder system that will see the end of ranks is a long way off.
Okay, cool. I knew I had no way of possibly doing it by December 10, but I also knew I didn’t have to. I really doubt they’ll remove ranks in less than 4 months, but I wasn’t sure how many games I would have to play to get there.
I might have to do some math. Can anyone tell me anything about rank points and how many of them are required to rank up? Does the amount increase with each rank (as it does with XP), or does it level off (as with World XP)?
EDIT: Never mind, I found it on the wiki.

5 hours a day for 3 weeks sounds right
According to my calculations (assuming a 7-minute game on average, but not counting bonus rank points), it could take anywhere from 75 to 100 hours, plus a little more for down time and build tweaking.
Takes me about a day (2+ hours) of team queues to rank up after rank 30 but I do that rarely now. I play 1 or 2 solo queue games and maybe a few team queues. If you do the same you could reach maybe rank 25 til the 10th. Maybe faster in hot joins.
r30 is not that bad at all, I’ve seen people who’ve hit it in a week or so of solid playing. Go for it.

The amount increases every 10 levels or so.
Right now, you said you are rank 15. Until you get to rank 19, you will need 4000 rank points for each rank up. After that, you will need 7500 rank points for each rank up from 19-29. Then, you will need 15000 rank points to go from 29-30.
So, you will need a total of 54,000 rank points to get to rank 20, and 136,500 to get to rank 30. This means you will need to get around 106,000 rank points to get to 30 from where you are now.
You earn rank by participating in PvP, you the amount you get depends on if you win or lose, how many top scores you got, if the match was over 7 minutes or not, and if you are playing in ranked matches or not (solo queue or team queue).
A win in hotjoin will, on average, get you 200 rank points. A lose will net you around 125. A win in solo queue will get you around 400, with a lose getting you around 150.
Assuming you did everything in hotjoin, and theoretically got all wins, you would need around 530 wins. If you had all loses, you would need 848 loses. So, you can assume with your win/lose ratio you’re going to need to play anywhere from 600-700 hotjoin games (if you didn’t do any queues). If you assume the average game will be around 10 minutes, that means you’ll have to invest around a maximum of 8,480 minutes total (if all you did was lose), or 141.3 hours. The shortest amount of time it would take would be 5,300 minutes (all wins), which is a minimum of 83.3 hours. So, you can say it will take you at least over 100 hours to accomplish, probably anywhere from 110-120.
In short, it’s doable in a few months, but a bit of effort and dedication will be needed. Any involvement in queues will speed up this process as well.

You need 2,271,500 rank points to get to rank 62. You’ll get to rank 70 at 3,421,500 rank points, meaning you need 1,150,000 more rank points. With only hotjoins and all wins, that’s 5,750 games. That means the shortest possible time it would take (each game being 7 minutes long), is 671 hours in hotjoin.
Suddenly, Skyhammer farming doesn’t seem so evil.

I’m already 62 and i wish i went skyhammer farm when i had chance to go straight from 60 to 70 instead of taking the long way and still at 62 now….after all farming like crazy is going to be rewarded….nice one anet, i still want to know how am i supposed to get my phoenix..since farmers already have it and i pvp since start, not just went sh farm for 2 months and back to pve..

I dont understand the point in removing the finishers….Why not just allow players to continue to go after them?
There is no player out there that has even attained the Dragon finisher, removing it out of the game is a terrible idea. I cant imagaine how many hours have been spent trying to get these finishers and now we suddenly get this.
If the finishers are going to be removed, give us 12 months before this change so we can atleast have enough time to still go for them.

With the extremely small size of the PvP development team, I personally would not expect ladders before the end of 2014.

You’re correct of course.
As a side question from a new pvper, is hotjoin more effective for rank farming than solo queue?
depends if you farm skyhammer or actually play tournies.

The only thing they are implementing is earning gold from matches and having new pvp rewards to buy, such as tomes of knowledge. So yes, you’re right. That’s not the issue. The problem is that they ARE removing rank at some point, which means we no longer have all the time in the world to get the ranks we want. While the time frame is longer than a week, it’s no longer indefinite.

Solo queue wins earn twice the amount of rank as hot join wins, but loses are roughly the same. However, solo queues are just that: queues, you won’t be in them 100%. I’d say do solo queues and then hotjoin when you’re waiting for the queue to pop.

Hotjoins will still net you more because there’s no downtime. Right after a match ends you can jump into another one, and it’ll already be in progress. I’ve got 800 rank points in less then two minutes because of this. Tpvp does give you more, however you are waiting for a que to pop. So if all you care about is ranking up, then hotjoins is still the way to go.
