How long till I stop sucking?
You’ll learn a lot by playing but I’d also recommend you watch people like cmc stream d/d ele on twitch.
A combination of trial and error + observing how the top elementalists who stream often will pick your game up quickly.
pvp is really different from pve. you may wanna practice on hj first. probably play 100 games or more there then you can start playing unranked.
most people who play on unranked have been playing pvp for months now or maybe years.
this might help you out.
PvP is about more than just being able to fight other players with your class.
Here’s a recent thread that links some recent items from around the forums that’ll give you a broad understanding of what’s going on and what you need to know. It’s not specefic to the ele class but there’s good stuff in there regardless.

I feel you become a solid player if you get around champ title on a class playing one or two builds.
Around 20-30 the skill usage begins to feel natural.
Around 50-60 you start to use the skills properly.
Past that and you refine your play with an eye towards specific situations.
I found that i couldnt play d/d as well as the better d/d players. It literally took me 5 matches to find that out and i switch back to staff which is what ive been since pre and im much better vs the better players on staff then on d/d. All im saying is you should try all the different ele builds and finding what your most comfortable with before sticking to a certain weapon set and traits.
Being new to pvp isn’t all about knowing your class though, you need to learn your role and the rotations as well. Plenty of games are lost because people think winning as about the fighting and ignore the conquest part of the game (i lost count when i saw newbie zerg someone at close and think they were doing good).
As a DD ele it’s very handy if you have a good map awareness (know when the other spots will be unguarded so you can decap – and cap if your team can handle the fight that you’re about to leave or else you return after the decap). The fight rotation you’ll grow used to pretty rapidly, although it’s a bit getting used to the attunement dancing if you’re used to another class (barring engi).
Watching top players on Twitch reveals how FAST combat moves in this game compared to typical “stand and cast MMOS”.
To be really good in GW2 you have to be reacting to the other player’s move. That means you cannot look at your keys, but rather you have to be looking at the screen the entire time looking for the telltale animations by your opponent telling you what he is casting….so you can instantly counter it.
Full disclosure: I cannot do it yet.
you get a ‘feel’ for pvp/maps/positioning after about 50 matches or so. But stay the hell out of hotjoins. Your skill will never get better there, as its a hotbed of stupidity, with no match balancing…
Thank you for all the responses. I’ll check out all the resources posted as well.
