Well for me, not having many friends that pvp I decided that I was going to YOLO queue my way up.

Amber, Emerald and Sapphire was easy enough, you either don’t lose pips or tiers. Ruby was actually pretty difficult at certain points. Matchmaking feels like it is about luck. One thing is you hope you don’t get matched up with 3+ man premades, another thing is you hope you don’t face MMR tankers, the guy who is amber but is actually a lot better than that indicates. You lose a crap ton of PIPS if you lose and gain only 1 pip if you win.

And sometimes you get terrible teams, people who don’t call targets or communicate, or don’t know the basic strategy of the game or those who run terrible builds or are not mechanically gifted at the game. Or sometimes your team comp sucks really bad, i.e not having a bunker. And sometimes you are facing people who are better than you simply, like facing a diamond player as a ruby player. Even though you all might be ruby or diamond, sometimes the skill gap is a lot bigger than what you would think.

Despite all these things working against you as a solo queuer, I think if you are genuinely a decent player, who plays a decent build you will get past these hurdles, and move up tiers and divisions.

I personally got up to diamond yolo queueing, I have pretty much no-lifed the hell out of ruby, it took me about 3 days to get out of it, played about 230 games from amber to diamond. I feel like I’ve been through hell and back. There were times where I lost like 6 in a row, some of those losses can be chalked up to the above. But there were times where I was able to string together like 7 wins in a row.

Honestly though, despite how flawed the system is, it was actually kind of fun going through the complete ups and downs of yolo queueing (but of course it wasn’t fun losing like 6 in a row, and smashing desks). Some of them were pretty heartbreaking too and very bad, like me and the team throwing a 200 point lead.

Of course I haven’t started my adventure in Diamond yet as a yolo queuer (not sure how much harder it would be over Ruby) but I think as long as I can win slightly more than I lose, it is only a matter of time before I can hit legendary (of course there is Diamond being super hard because the skill level of players shoot up dramatically). It may take me up to 400 games played just to cross that division. But I am taking a break to do stuff with the guild because I’ve been anti-social these past few days lol.

Well, I guess my message out there to you Yolo queuers is that you shouldn’t give up hope! I hear a lot of people struggle a bit at ruby (I did too sort of) but it is definitely possible! If you are a decent player you will make it!

I personally played a Marauder Power Sword/Hammer Revenant in all of Ruby. I played this build because I found that a lot people dont stomp (getting the impossible odds stomp is key) and a lot of people don’t res (the infused light trait comes in handy) and basically it allowed me to fill in a lot of holes for the team. And it could actually do pretty well contesting points 1v1 and 1v2 because of all the evades/blocking/healing.

And if I do make it out of Diamond, I will be sure to document it here! But I feel a little bored playing pvp because it is the same old meta builds you are fighting. The annoying unkillable druid who always contests your home, the bunker mesmer/ele that seems to always be mid, the thief who runs around decapping everything in sight, the condi rev who deals 3k burn ticks as well as direct damage burst, and the scumbag DH trappin nodes.

Also yolo Qd till diamond.

The skill cap in diamond is noticable higher than in ruby. Considering my average skills most of my matches were even and it feels like a real pvp right now for me. It’s enjoyable so far and I’m only at tier 3.

I also solo queued to diamond. Emerald as surprisingly difficult for me and took forever it seemed to complete but after that I got through sapphire with no problems and thanks to an INCREDIBLY luck run of about 23 out of 25 Wins in ruby I made it to the final 2 tiers in 2 days and made slow progress to finally reach diamond in a game when I was matched with an ESL player in my team (when I saw that I just concluded to myself I had won that game, and did, haha). Now I am in diamond I have made no progress at all (win a couple, lose a couple, win a couple, lose a couple) so it seems that this is the league I belong in. I am now looking forward to a lot of fun, close matchups.

ESL players huh? 70-80% of them arent better than what youll find in random higher MMR soloq.

I mix it up between solo and duo que with some people on my friends list. Should hopefully hit Saphire tonight but having a blast regardless.

This is stupid. I just came back last week after a 3 month break and I’ve been cruising through ruby purely soloqing with over 64% winrate. I’m 1 tier away from diamond with around 130 games played: http://www.gw2score.com/PvP/player/eksn7264

Yeah PvP isn’t very fun right now, yeah you run into premades, yeah the system can be gamed. But if you can’t soloq to diamond it’s just a learn to play issue.

it’s definitely not impossible. aside from the first tier of ruby and last tier of sapphire, i did the entirity up to t5 of diamond via soloQ. And as other people in this post have shown, other people have also done it soloQ.

You can chalk it up to luck if you want, but I honestly think 5 loss streaks(for example) aren’t entirely luck. I mean, look at phantaram. He progressed to diamond soloQ, and did it in a relatively low amount of games. He streamed most, if not all of it too so you can look at his VoDs if you want

I only queue solo…not even duo. And as u can see in most screenshots there are quite a few ppl who do it. You just need a + 50% winratio.

Got to diamond 100% yolo as a venom share teef, and a handful games as staff tempest (mostly when we were 2 teevz.)

So much hate it was crazy.
Tbh i feel i need to step back before trying legend, not because balance is a mess, not because of the snoozfest meta, but because i need a break from all the braindead hate.
Funny enough, 99% of the hate occurs between 6 to 10pm, so there’s that.

I have to agree about the ride there.

Its funny because i honestly feel alot of us probably hit a snag. For me it was emerald t4 and i was like why am i losing im so much better then these people. Eventually i got to diamond aswell.

I mostly solo que with a few duo and trio ques. Actually the first week of the season i was 5 man teaming it and we rushed threw amber and i solo much of the way from there. Ive gotten to t2 diamond but i know ive hit my cap and alot of the games are actually interesting and fun again.

That’s all I do. I’ve been stuck in Ruby for weeks now and I accept that perhaps this is where I belong. But what bothers me is all these smurf diamond/legendary premades getting into ruby matches and taking two pips on a loss while only ever giving one on a win.

Great to see a lot of people having got to diamond solo queueing! To those who say it isn’t possible you couldn’t be more wrong!

Sure you can’t carry your team in a traditional sense, but doing the little things like calling targets, taking it upon yourself to stomp downed players and ress allies, pinging mini map to alert people of home, telling your bunkers to stay mid, contesting far in either a 1v1/1v2, on a neutral point, rotating to contest a point when your team has wiped are all things in the end that will relieve the burden from your team and essentially help them carry themselves. You may not be able to carry your team alone but you certainly can be the difference between winning and losing.

Sometimes you’ve got to look at it like, what could I have done better in this game, you can only blame your team so much after losing 3+ games in a row.

Every team is prone to making big mistakes, especially a team of pugs who think it is a good idea to continuously send 2 far and wiping when you win all the teamfights mid.

IMO the best way to probably do it is play a bunker chrono/tempest/druid but you can definitely do it with many meta builds.

It isn’t usually a good idea either to continue playing once you have lost 3 in a row. I think that was my mistake. I would try to play through my frustrations. But I was able to string together many wins.

I managed to go on two huge win streaks in ruby, the second picture was epic because in that last match, where it was 499-500 it actually brought me to diamond. My heart was racing because my team was actually supposed to lose that one lol.

Midway through Ruby and I just soloQ- I tried a few matches (less than 10) with a friend but I don’t have a lot of time to play and soloQ is just more efficient.

I haven’t had much trouble with the process other than I don’t have a whole lot of time. I’ve maintained over 60% winrate throughout but I sometimes can’t play for 2+ days. Just gotta keep at it but I definitely have already noticed increased queue time, sometimes hitting 8-10 minutes already. I’m not sure I’ll be able to progress through Diamond based on what people report about soloQ wait times…

Solo Q in ruby. Play vs premades of 3-5 about 75% of games. Its a kittening joke with the current matchmaking system.

Again when yoloQ, uncheck stronghold, it’s a pub stomper’s wet dream.
