I left the game about 1 and half month ago, because 95% of my matches were 500-200 winning or losing, have they fixed it, or it’s still bad?

I’m sorry to hear that your games haven’t been to your satisfaction; however, can you please provide a little more information?

-What class were you playing?
-Were you playing a meta build/ cheese build at the time?
-What type of match were you entering? Practice (hotjoin), Unranked, or Ranked?

If you were just playing Hotjoin, you will have horrible matches. There is nothing that can be done about it, it’s practice.

If you were playing in Ranked by your self, the only thing I can suggest is tweak your build to be more team oriented. Ideally, you should play in Ranked with a friend or two. Entering Ranked by your self is not something you can really control. The more people you have on your team and you are able to communicate with, the better your team will perform.

From my own personal experience, I think I’ve only had 4-5 games from Unranked that were in the 500: 200 range. Ranked wise ( i always go with a friend) only 1-2 games that were 500-200 range. Time frame wise, this would be roughly just this year (2015), maybe I’m just lucky.

always join by myself. only have a certain amount of time each day to get in so don’t want to ask people just to leave after a couple matches. I play ranked btw. class is irrelevant and so is what build i’m playing when I get a team that is all pugs versus teams that have 3 or more premade. granted I have had pug teams beat teams like that but those are few and far between.
so I would be a big’ole +1 for bring back split arenas for solo joiners and team joiners

Class is pretty relevant as well is the build. It will be handy for others to assist you if we knew what your focus was. Perhaps the build you were playing is an obsolete build or needs to be fine-tuned to match the current meta.

E.g.

It is not a good idea to run hambow against a Power Ranger who has Rampage as One.

If a majority of your matches has a lot of Ranger and you’re playing hambow, this may be an issue as to why you’re losing a lot of games. It only takes 1-2 people not on their games to cause scores like this.

No offense intended anywhere in that statement.

today I kept going up against an Apex premade + some other esports dude. probably about 4-5 games in a row. some were fun actually, others not so much. you can learn and improve a lot in these situations, but if it’s a complete stomp then you cant learn anything. like when youre always fighting 3+ people and getting instagibbed because your teammates are kissing the ground the entire match.

in short, matchmaking is still freaking terrible, and it’s still not distributing professions appropriately. for example, 3 thieves today against a balanced comp with no thieves. it’s loco man.

I actually think that the matchmaking is working quite accurately, I hear a lot of these “QQ MATCHMAKON SUX” comments but mine has been pretty consistent, I regularly queue with the same group of players are 80% of the time there isn’t anyone who is vastly less skilled grouped with us. I’ve been screen capping all my matches to test this, and they’re pretty consistent too.

I see some people above picking the worst matchups, but I think they’re cherry picking pictures to make it look worse than it is. It’s been weeks since I’ve joined a 4v5 that wasn’t due to my own DC and for the most part the games we get end up pretty balanced.

If you were just playing Hotjoin, you will have horrible matches. There is nothing that can be done about it, it’s practice.

I agree with Benjamin.
My matches have been a lot of what’s shown in his pictures. If I end the game by 200 or 300, I know it’s a team composition issue more than anything.

Sometimes my teamates just blatantly runs to an area knowing full well that we’re all dead and out-rotated. It astounds my how little coordinated some people are in solo pvp… or how little they pay attention to their own team.

Yea, the score differentials like that are usually more indicative of an unlucky matchup or a random dead-weight rather than matchmaking. The thing is it’s incredibly easy to set your team back hundreds of points by just playing below average, but it’s incredibly hard to make up for one guy, so whoever gets stuck with the person thats playing drunk or something ends up in situations like that alot.

eh unless we get a rage quit 95% of my matches have been 5v5 and balanced classes.

Whether its a good match up or not is iffy. Maybe 1/8th of the time I’ll run into a clear premade and get stomped. The rest of the really bad match ups are just dead weight players. They AFK at spawn (not really, they complain the whole match, I can’t believe how often this happens) because we lost mid at start or something silly we might be ab le to come back from normally if they’d just play ><

Everything Wolfey has said, is completely and utterly wrong by the way. Even down to “don’t play a Hambow vs a Power Ranger”. A Hambow is actually the one direct ultimate counter to a Power Ranger. Any Ranger build for that matter.

At any rate, if you want to “forum specialist” yourself, make sure you post correct info. Otherwise you just look like a big troll and are helping to mislead new players.

It also slightly disgusts me that you seem to be veering people’s focus away from the very blatently obvious problem with the MMR algorithm in conjunction with solo ques.

No offense intended but seriously man…. let’s not act like it’s his fault for having bad matches. After all, the MMR algorithm is supposed to “find people at his level”. Whether you’re excellent or new, you should be running 50/50. Not getting slammed 500 to 100 with your solo que team vs. some 5 man premade who runs AGs and ESL

Im not saying this is you but many people who solo que are really only there to test there own builds and ideas. So you see the guy running into a 1 vs 3 situation or a guy running to a point where 1 other player is there and there build is terrible for 1 vs 1.

I find most solo que people dont understand or dont make a build that will work with other players.

Same here, I’m an average casual player, and the matches I get seem mostly random. I get 4-5 games with very strong enemy or player that are total beginners (some don’t even cap point) and then few games where I have very strong teammates. So maybe 1 in 10 games would I say its really matched.

Some one said its elo based system… and then I remembered Leage of Legends and their “elo hell” few years back. It was exactly the same thing. AFAIK Riot worked a year on the system to fix it (kinda).

The question now is, is there a way to get more balance matches?

And what to do when people that never played PVP (it’s obvious after first minute) join ranked games? Should I just afk for 10 minutes? Cuz hey, you can’t even properly report ppl in GW2. I don’t do this, but today the matching system kittened me off. I mean I can’t even get dailies sometimes >_<

Anet… Why would you allow beginners to join ranked if you know the system is flawed or even broken?

Finally… The money is put aside for HoT, but if I don’t see any improvements about matchmaking in the changelogs before release, I’ll rather spend it on something else.

PS.: I play pvp legendary warrior build and only that.

Im not saying this is you but many people who solo que are really only there to test there own builds and ideas. So you see the guy running into a 1 vs 3 situation or a guy running to a point where 1 other player is there and there build is terrible for 1 vs 1.

I find most solo que people dont understand or dont make a build that will work with other players.

Most people who test builds do that in hotjoin or unranked.

yeah, it’s a godkitten mess. run and don’t look back. my experience today has been the same as RoRo’s. and yesterday, and the day before.

I’ll be perfectly frank here, ive stuck it out with GW2 through thick and thin, but once Overwatch is out and if things aren’t fixed, theyre gonna lose a lot of pvp’ers for good including myself.

Most things in yolo queue I can tolerate because random goes with the territory. But every couple of days I get a match that starts 4v5 like in the attached screenshots.

I can’t for the life of me understand why this happens. Why cant the match be postponed until a 5th player joins? If there is no 5th, why can’t everyone just re-queue in Heart of the Mists?

For the most part, it’s not a match making issue, at least what the screenshots are showing. The problem comes from two distinct issues.

1) Full Team vs Mixed Team
My guild and I did a 5 ranger team a couple of nights ago just for fun and we got mixed teams to play against.

2) People being sore losers / stuck up elitists.

For Number 1 the only thing we can really do is seperate Queues and that’s been repeatedly reported on and beat to death…. we are just stuck on a wait and see….

Number 2 I think we should discuss a bit more on. Before, we had Dishonor but there was a serious bug with it hitting innocent people. What would you guys like to see happen with this?

2 is actually quite rare. maybe once or twice a day out of like 20 games.

for #1 – we wouldn’t have to do a separate queue if the matchmaker had more rules to it, such as distributing profs evenly. for example, you shouldn’t be allowed to roll with 4 other rangers while the other team has none, or one.

very often, I would say more often than not, loss results from 2 mesmers on one side being matched up against 2 thieves. or another example – 3 medi guards on one side, and a bunch of squishy specs on the other with zero guards. this kind of stuff is what makes people rage.

personally, I don’t care if it’s a premade. just distribute the profs appropriately. and it’s obvious that gw2 does have rock, paper, scissors elements to it. unlike the 25 people playing esports, the rest of us don’t get to choose a comp. we should either be able to select our builds pre-game, or the matchmaker should be more intelligent and do it for us.

I dunno. I only have 320 games played and solo queuing is predictably random. I’m fine with it. I get games where I have to carry hard and games where I get carried hard. Most of my games are pretty close in score terms (500-400). I’ve started to shadowplay all of my losses because its a good way of identifying and correcting my own mistakes. The only thing I don’t understand is the 4v5 starts.

I get it when people disconnect or ragequit. I just don’t understand when games start 4v5 and stay 4v5 for the entire match. These are all games with less than 3 minute queues

no. if you went in with 5 rangers, the matchmaker shouldn’t start the game for you unless the other team has at least 3 rangers, for example. so then you would wait for 3 rangers to queue up. in a mixed queue, those with a premade team should wait longer because theyre at a huge advantage.

you could make other rules. for example, if there are two medi guards and two thieves in the queue, the matchmaker shouldn’t place two thieves on one team, and the two guards on the other.

third, two necros and two rangers on one team – these guys cant stay on point, so playing against a balanced comp of equal skill/MMR would be ridiculous. split it down the middle and give each side 1 ranger and 1 necro.

etc.

but who’s analyzing this stuff anyway? what sorts of metrics are they using? are they even interpreting them? imo, it would be a lot easier to just put the 10 players on a pre-game versus screen and at least make the professions visible before entering the game. here, players could decide to swap profs, QUIT, or change up their builds.

without this kind of infrastructure in place, we will never have more than 25 people playing gw2 esports.

It does a pretty good job of explaining in simple terms why you can’t keep partitioning a queue unless theres an unbelievable number of players in it 24/7. I understand that alot of matchmaking criteria are relaxed so that queue times do not routinely exceed certain thresholds. I don’t get long queues anyway, so its not a problem that effects me as much as it affects top players who are dangerously close to spending more time queuing than actually playing matches.

I actually tryharded GW1 gvg around 2006-2008 and I spent vastly more time queuing than playing matches. Off peak queues times for top 50 gvgs were routinely 1 hour+. At peak times they were routinely 30 mins+. The longest I ever queued for a gvg without getting a match was over 2 hours.

When you waste that much of your life queuing, you will take anything. As bad as it gets with mixed solo/team queues in GW2 pvp, I’ll usually take that over waiting. I understand that for more stringent matchmaking criterea and acceptable queue times, you need a tonne of players that GW2 doesn’t really have right now. Very few games do for a long period of time.

if you build it, they will come. put the infrastructure in place and more people will play. don’t compromise on quality. we’ve had enough of that I think. pre-made vs. soloq is another issue I didn’t really want to get into, sorry.

but im saying just do something simple, like if there are 4 necros in a queue, don’t give one team 3 and kitten them, while giving the other one. if there are two thieves and two medi guards in the queue, don’t give one side the two thieves. these rules wouldn’t prolong queue times at all. im just calling for even prof distribution. this is of course just a band aid solution, as I would much prefer a moba-style pre-game screen so that we’re matching players and not builds/profs.

How is this not a matchmaking issue, i play dota for 2 years, and worst i got was 3,2 vs 2,2,1, and i can count in 1 hand how many times it happened.

If gw2 pvp had the same population (in Numbers) of dota2 you would get a similar experience.

Matchmaking can improve but can’t make miracles.

Not so many people to match perfectly skill and roster size

That’s a good article… so I assume GW2 does not have 60K concurrent players in pvp. Then I guess premades are quick answer to the problem.

I really wish total beginners would not be allowed into ranked games, because they are just adding to the problem of matchmaking issue.

bad math , games take 15 mins at most and connection is not a real problem. I game at off peak hrs gped with sea players and never had any problem. Their pool of players is small. Even with small pool you can get good match making by making players of similar skill wait different times to get on the same match cycle.

Yesterday I played 2 games on ranked. First was about 100-500 loss (we had 4 vs 5 and later just 3 vs 5 enemies). Next game we had 5 vs 4 enemies and circa 500-100 easy win. Neither game was any fun.

Today I have played 6 times unranked. Four games have been a total blown out loss and one game was a 500-0 win for us (5vs5 in courtyard). The most “balanced” match ups had 150-500 final score. We had 4 players vs 5 enemies. And the final game was 400-500 loss. I was the top scorer for my team in both games.

I am mere spvp rank 28 and I always solo queue and I have heard similar horrible experiences from a friend of mine who stopped spvp because of this. Evenly matched games are way too rare. I am not particularly proud I was part of a team winning 500-0. That kind of wins or losses should be extremely rare in a well-designed game.

4vs5 should not even exist. The game should restart the queue if there is only 4 active on the other side (not leaving the spawn in 15 seconds). Auto rebalancing (adding a new player to replace the missing one) would also be good.

Badly designed maps (Skyhammer, Spirit Watch, Courtyard) + totally failed match making are the biggest reasons people don’t want to play spvp. The 1st one is very easy to fix. Just remove those 3 maps from unranked queue as well. Secondly there should really be a separate queue for partial premades/teams and randoms.

If Arenanet wants to expand the player base, they really must cater the solo queue experience as priority #1, otherwise no new player wants to keep playing spvp.

Yeah, I just had a pug vs pug match that was 2 rangers, a thief, an elementalist, and a guardian versus three thieves and two guardians. The guardians both quit pretty about 45 seconds in and some of my team basically camped their respawn to more efficiently kill the remaining thieves.

The final score was 500 to 36. Horrible matchmaking caused people to quit the match, which lead to a pretty bad display of sportsmanship, and a blow-out. If I was on that team, and I was new to PvP, I would probably never come back.

I’ve been duo queing today, we have lost almost all our games, the system seems to be putting so much weight on us just because we are duo.

You can’t carry a rifle warrior who dies to Svanir 3 times with 2 thieves, one being p/p against a med guard and double cele engi with a shoutbow.

And this has happened almost every game for the past 10 or so we have played.

even if I had 70% winrate, I’d still have left

Well, matchmaking is pretty bad sometimes…. but in your case.. could this be the real problem? :p
