How to beat Chrono as a Tempest?
When I play chronomancer I often have trouble against shocking aura elementalist. I can win if I dodge well but it definitely counters sword and shatters as long as you stay close to them. Diamond skin can counter some condition mesmers. But it is hard and you probably have to be the better player.
Shocking aura being wind on a sizable cooldown means it’ll come late in the battle, and an early air overload is going to get interrupted even traited for stability, avoided and waited out (though lightning flash fortunately doesn’t cancel it) or at worst bursted down during the animation. I’ve defeated some DH’s, Reapers, and Druids well enough but all the Chronos seem to know when to pop their blocks and stack confusion. I do some stuff in fire but the lack of condi damage means the burning provides minimal pressure while water is good for chill or even an overload heal if I have the time.
Its a tough match up indeed. Most mesmers have enough invuln and dazes to make the fight difficult to win.
The biggest thing is getting interrupts on them.
The beginning of the fight is all about avoiding their damage and shield 5 skill.
If you can force them to blow all their cooldowns without losing much health it will put you in a good position.
You might want to consider changing your shouts since they are a long cooldown.
I know that powerful auras is a strong option, however, your survivabilty will increase substantially by simply changing your utilities to lower cooldown auras and taking cleansing water.
Allies still gain the benefits of auras from shouts and Elemental Bastion which I feel is more than enough support.
You should really take Invigorating torrents instead as well since auras will remove conditions.
Not enough damage in your build to justify traits and utilities to increase damage output.
Sorry if thats all over the place. Alot goes into fighting chronos, however, I find alot of their rotations generally the same.
Bad Elementalist
I don’t think it’s possible to “win” the matchup as Tempest in the sense of killing the chrono.
If you’re willing to run Cleansing Water + aura regen over Powerful Auras + overload stab, you can stall indefinitely. The trick is to not use your cleansing skills while diamond skin is still up — let the clones or staff autoattacks hit you to proc diamond skin. Once you dip below 75%, swap to water and/or use one of your auras to cleanse and pop back over 75%, then let diamond skin do the cleansing again. If you keep this up, your defensive CDs will last longer than the mesmer’s offensive CDs. (You can see Wakkey doing this really well in a lot of the earlier Proleague matches this season, before mesmers stopped trying to decap against him).
But stalling indefinitely against the mesmer isn’t really a “win,” since that means you’re not around to support your team in teamfights.
Your best bet is to get a rev or thief to +1 and down the mesmer quickly (with your support, including condi cleanse, shocking aura to interrupt blurred frenzy, Air5 to interrupt block). Or swap in someone who can do better in the matchup (like druid or war) so that you’re free to leave the point and join a teamfight.
With Powerful Auras (which I notice you’re running), I don’t think the matchup is winnable. The mesmer will put on condis faster than you can cleanse.
