Give me some tips anyone. Do you target the pet or what?

no you ignore pets… by the time u do any damage they swap them out.. and the healing on bm pets is good enough for you to not bother with it as u probs wont kill it before your dead anyways..

the best way to beat a bm ranger is to interrupt heals and try to strip some boons.. mainly regen..

the probs your having are not because of the pet…

it’s because of the healing..

You have to interrupt the healing. That’s basically your sole option.
If it’s Healing spring and it gets off than you have to interrupt/immobilize the leap.

Pet’s soak up way too much damage and just get swapped out. We talking back-to-back hasted pistol whips “Why isn’t it dead?” kind of sturdy.

You can try to remove the boons but meh. Getting poison on them obviously helps assuming it doesn’t vanish off em a moment later.

To be honest I usually avoid fighting them 1 on 1 haha because I figure its a bad engagement for a necro with no utilitiys of any use in a 1v1. On occasion I am forced to though and really I often just get owned so hard lol. Hence I wondered for tips :P

Using the terrain to kite the pet is very helpful. Jumping over the small fences/hedges on kyhlo, running up things and jumping off ledges, and just plain kiting will help significantly.

Poison field and trick shot with a thief is good enough.

Anyone have an example build of this? Just want to get an idea what they’re working with.

As a necro ? there’s no way.

i would like to say " interrupt the heal" but most rangers finally understood the superiority of healing spring, and no one uses the “long cast” troll ungeunt and heal as one.

i would like to say " try to kite the pet by chilling/crippling him" but even pets cleanse conditions as long as they have signet of renewal.
moreover birds have long swiftness uptime, and canines have leaps & CCs.

the only thing you can do is to delay the unavoidable, or rather try to avoid bird burst and do what i said above, while keeping poison on him.

And don’t waste putrid mark or your heal before he uses Entangle, otherwise you’re dead meat.

on a sidenote:

BM hybrid ranger is the toughest 1vs1 prof, there’s absolutely no way to defeat him unless you’re a mesmer, on a balanced build, abusing staff phase retreat ( since it makes the pet to lose aggro, LOL 6 months old bug) or shatter mesmer with 250 bloodlust buff using Moa on him and bursting him after moa’s evade ( HIGHLY improbable, but it happened to me once lol).

If you’re talking about a duel I think the only class that can beat it consistently is a perma-stealth thief abusing blinding power + heartseeker with the heal/condi remove in stealth traits, but it’d be a long duel.

If you’re talking about actual tourney play in a team fight it is best to just go after somebody else. Most of the damage is tied to their pet, and all pets outside of the bird can simply be kited in circles and they will never hit you. If there is things like ledges around (such as around the mid node on Legacy) that makes it even easier as pets cannot jump down ledges.

If you need to attack a node with a BM ranger guarding it you can send a bunker there with strong node control (probably a guardian) and focus on knocking the ranger off the node to neutralize the point. Although honestly vs tanky 1v1 specialist builds like these it’s best to just to try to force team fights where you will likely have an advantage.

The only pet that can be killed on a BM ranger is if they are using birds and if they are you only have 16 seconds to do it. You can attempt to kill it but I would use a few guidelines to do it, one is to try and use aoe’s to hit both the ranger and the bird with aoe condition applications as this will be moved to pet from empathic bond (if they use it), if they use Signet of Renewal then you have more work to do. Also if you kill one you get 48 seconds to kill the second and after that another 48 seconds which is much easier than 16. If you do it they are stuck without a pet for quite a while if not you just wasted a bunch of time to accomplish nothing, its a large risk.

But I think the most important thing for “strategy to beat them” would come down to the class you are playing against them. BM Rangers do well against low damage over time due to healing spring and the leaps, regen, energy regen, and several weapon dodge abilities. So if you want the simplest solution it would be high burst damage, approach it similar to how you would deal with a regen/heal elementalist.

^ hight burst can work, but it’s difficult to pull off with the evades. Look to actually land a cc chain, then burst imo. It’s just hard to do solo.

I normally beat them with my ele if I have elemental (elite), but I have serious problems againts condi rangers.

as a necro you can put up decent pressure – fearing heals and dodging jaguar burst / torch #4 will severly cripple the damage applied.
keeping track of emphatic bond, healing spring cd and pet swap cd are also very helpful. if you keep track of EB you can epidemic the condis right back on the ranger or just unload on ranger, epidemic and the pet gets double the conditions, thus it should die rather quickly.
if you play epidemic/terror build you can actually beat the ranger if you play it really well – the bad ones that is and there are a quite a few around. but they’re not putting much thought behind their actions, nor are they using their pets correctly.
it’s possible if you are a really good thief and manage to harras on range with poison and then go in with the haste procc if the dodges already were blown.
engineers work as well.

I was able to defeat a few in recent soloQ tournies on my thief. I run a p/d & shortbow build and stayed in the node with caltrops/poison field and mainly kept them poisoned and used the Healing Seed that I was able to steal. It was a long, boring fight and landing CnD to heal conditions was hard, but you can conveniently land it on the pet.

In my experience as a BM ranger the only people who can beat me are thieves due to stealth and being able to burst me down quickly. The stealth really messes with my pet.
Mesmers same reason they can just stealth and phantasms due more dmg then my pet lol and are ranged. Otherwise maybe a warrior who caught me off guard, specially if my cooldowns arent ready. if both are downed a warrior vs ranger, a warrior always wins in a downed battle vengeance stomp my pet Rez lol. In a duel tho I find it sad that I can literally stand still push 2 3 4 (sword dagger) timed correctly nothing else and kill a warrior lol sad.

But that’s the answer avoid the pet as much as possible dodge keep moving. Terrain as well.

I play a tankier staff necro, and i’ve never had trouble with this beastmaster spec hunters yet, fought several always win fights. either they die or flee.

Could be non of em are really good at it…or im just an exceptional necro. Havent had to fight any on my eng/war/gaurd that i’m aware of yet….but as for necro they seem to be easy as long as your not glass cannon.

You can pick shaman for the hybrid BM or cleric for the full bunker ranger ( +double moa pet if you want to go full bunker)

for a thieve i tried a few build and finally came out with a build that let u at least have a chance to go against a bm or trap bunker ranger. Their endless kiting and healing with condition remover make them hard to kill and their pet just kill you before u take them down.

Edit: i don’t use the gimmick build i hate that play style i prefer engaging fights but i still don’t find 3 hit kill bs thief are that strong once you get to know their gameplay.

A thief doesn’t stand any chance against a BM ranger.

thief are BM trap bunker rangers food, yum yum. same for phantasm mesmer, their illusion get trap in the trap most of the time.

i tend to try and get in close and use the pet as an epidemic post.. if the pet and player are both getting hit by marks and grasping dead then they get quite a few conditions after the epidemic. Before stacking wait for knockback (if they have longbow) then after epidemic go straight into ds, once out go putrid mark. By then they should be hurting.

boon stripping is good as well

poison poison poison poison poison. throw up whatever trash condi you can to make poison stick.

you are fighting through 2 unstrippable heals at all times ( grandmaster BM trait & SoWild ).

learn pet anims, avoid them. ranger is ~30% of dmg output, pet is ~70%. avoid cripple / chill as best you can, these snares guarantee pets will connect. conversely, any CC works well on pets, they take a while to path back to you after recovering.
