Since there are so many glass thieves in hotjoin these days, I thought it would be interesting to build a thief-killer and go a-huntin’.
So what’s a glass thief’s counter? I guess it’s going to be:
1: Able to withstand the initial burst as you stand there as bait.
2: Ability to debuff their attack ability
3: Enough DPS to take send them back for a short nap at their base.
What are your ideas?
The Alien (condi necro),That Wreckin Crew (Mesmer)
Silentshoes (Thief), Wind of the Woods (condi ranger)
Melee BM ranger crushes most thief builds pretty easyly, though it does take a little while.

I have played 6 classes extensively, no guardian or ranger. Warrior definitely.

Brb instakill if they have no stunbreak
Brb see thief, pop stability, let him steal, dodge, hit F1, 5, 4, 2, dead thief pops up out of stealth

Thieves (at least the Dagger Thieves) can’t deal with CC and have no access to Stability.
Stunning them is the best way to counter them and Hammer has plenty of AoE cleaving stuns. Best thing is you can couple it with a few immunities to mitigate potential backstabs.

longbow-hammer war always wins against thieves.
Any kind of thief.
Just the longbow is enough to kill any thief in a frontload 1vs1 fight.
Strange, hammer is like the most telegraphed weap in the game.
You can beat a thief but only if they let you, they have the ability to escape combat like no other – Felne Grace, Heal Evade, Sword #2, Short Bow #3 spam, Refuge, other Stealth/Ports.
In a 1v1 environment its their choice to die not yours to kill, which is why so much is written abouth them as they frustrate the hell out of people. Ofc they can die in a team fight if they make a mistake like anyone else, regardless Sword #2 is OP and needs to be changed also Feline Grace is too much.
offensive meditations guardian is the hard counter to gc thief. sw/f + sc/t
idk if the build still works, haven’t played it in awhile, but I remember it was like sooo many blocks thiefs and warriors couldn’t do anything to it. Terrible mobility though.
Hammer is pretty easy for thief to deal with, you can just drop a pistol 5 and dance on them. LB is a pain in the kitten for thief though.

@OP: Another thief (go shadow arts and train the thief all game if you really hate him), an engineer, a warrior or a one-shotting elementalist that catches you off guard are the classes I personally find the hardest to deal with. Well, maybe not another thief since after playing a thief for a solid year or so, you kitten on 99.99% of the ones you encounter.

I win almost every 1v1, with the exception of some engineers and necros of they catch me off-guard.
Engineers are definitely my worst match, between their. Onditions, confusions, blinds, tons of healing and cc…there’s not much you can do.
Again, it depends on the player.
Some sun-lock warriors absulotely destroy me…but for the most part I have the most trouble vs engineers and outnumbered fights.
But I’m an advanced player, most hotjoin thieves are noobs and if you play well, you should be able to have o trouble destroying them with any class you choose.
But again, if I had to choose an anti-thief class, I’d take an engineer.

And that is imho the issue with thieves in the nutshell: What holds them back is AoE along with condi-spam. And that is why I would hate a nerf to AoE and condi-spam if it didn’t come together with serious changes to thieves.
Depends on the thief. Sword pistol / dagger pistol thieves will generaly beat wqrrqirs but wqrriqrs will beat sword dagger thieves. But may god have mercy on your soul when you fight a good p/d p/d thief. A p/d p/d thief that is good will never lose a 1v1.

There is no counter to s/d thief. You cant beat what you cant hit. Doesnt mean it cant be beaten. But still. No real counter
You could learn how timing works, and maybe switch to a ranged weapon.
But I understand how those might be extremely complex tactics more suited for hardcore TPvPers rather than people who just want to screw around in hot join.
On-topic: find the thief spec that’s giving you trouble, roll it, and play with it for a few days. You’ll learn the strengths and weaknesses pretty quickly.

lol, It depends on theif build, most are cookie cutters though, people rarely see P/P, and dont know what to do when they encounter one, its fun staying at 900 range bursting down people. If any one comes up to me I blind them, if I get too low they cant catch me. But you can beat theif with any class, it depends on how versed you are and how versed they are at that time.

RFI, Withdraw, Shadow Step, Inf Signet, Shortbow 5, 3 dodge rolls and 2 sec swiftness per roll are all great compliments to eachother, too many nuuby theives rely on stealth, and stealth does nothing for you against stun lock warriors.
