After I got some requests to do a video like this I talked to Ventari to play some duels vs a good thief and after some wins and losses I uploaded these duels to show you guys how you can win against a S/D thief as a condi necro
Now i thought about making this a series where you guys can tell me in the comments or here on the forum which class-matchups you want to see because you have a hard time fighting a certain class.
I will then invite top players to duel these classes

Just saying:

1. Sizer could have played better, there is no reason to go shortbow against a necro, you simply lose pressure and go to necro advantage ( range).

2. Ventari plays actually good, but WHY NO CD TRACKING for the love of god .

3. Ventari was clearly better than him. It’s hard to judge from videos like this, there where situations where Sizer just tried to walk away from Necro pressure, and any thief knows it’s pure suicide.

He should have played better with Inf strike, and there was also no reason to start with Basilisk at the start, losing a potential full condi cleanse, or from stealth, basically overwriting Tactical strike with Basilisk.

Basically Ventari played perfectly while Sizer did some very gross mistakes, knowing he should be quite high ranked.

well yea that was the reason ventari was winning the duels we just wanted to show hot it works if it works the problem is thief is kind of a counter to almost every class in duels so its pretty hard to find a match where the thief plays perfectly and the necro as well and the necro wins..

Nah in duels a thief can actually lose against tons of classes ( engi, necro, war, spirit ranger, eles), it’s in team fights that a thief is basically immortal.

In a duel, the thief is aleays visible, he can’t go away and come back at full health after 10 secs.

S/D thief is good 1vs1 but not invincible, the only class which will lose EVERY time is the mesmer.

as far as i have played against s/d thieves i usually win in tournys when it comes to a duel and i am mesmer still a thief is so much stronger in duels than in actual teamfights because he has to waste a lot of initiative to stay alive vs the cleave dmg of 5 people

It means you’ve played against bad thieves or that you’re no more using crappy shatter builds.

In a teamfight you just need to swap to shortbow and Disabling shot, dodge, Disabling shot, dodge, disabling shot, dodge, withdraw, Signet of agility and so on and on .

In a team fight when focused i can evade for 15 secs if not more, and if for some reason i’m not already out of the fight, shadow refuge and bye bye.

This of course if you do not have a Shadow return available.

S/D thief is always a waste of time if you focus on him. At least if he knows how to play.

As i’ve been referred, a good chunk of good thieves in EU rerolled to D/P because “too mainstream” and “too boring”, so you probably are not facing good S/D thieves anymore.

I can understand them tough: S/D is OP but it’s miles behind to the thrill of playing D/P.

i played against several top thieves and they usually farmed me with my old build but like everyone else i adapted to the meta haha

It’s not so obvious, most mesmers just stick with their old shatter and gets farmed and QQ.

yea i see a lot of mesmers running around with the old spec as well..thieves have changed their builds eles did rangers did everyone else did but most mesmers are either too lazy or not motivated enough to change their builds thats why i opened up my youtube channel to provide them with new ideas

Would be interesting to see him fight a good pistol dagger thief. A skilled p/d thief will never lose a duel.

a p/d thief that is actually good honestly will never lose a duel. YOu can time the p/d 3 skill to port you away when a stun lands the animation is that quick. Plus you land all your Cloak and daggers you will never get to half. I have beaten tons of mesmers, spirit rangers mm necros, just by stealthing off the AI.

I think that the s\d thief could play much better than he did in the video.
But this is only a 1v1 situation and in all honesty, s\d thieves specs are not the best against an heavy condition spamming build. Not saying they are the worst spec but surely there are some better build for countering a necro in a fair 1v1 duel.
I still think s\d thief is the best for a tournment situation tho, it’s sustained damage coupled with its mobility makes him realy hard to focus in a team fight situation but realy Dangerous if not focused at all.
I main thief since beta and I respect you and your team Sensotix but I think that 1v1 Necro vs s\d thief is not fair and not common to see in tournment., at least if you don’t leave the necro alone defending 1 node, that I don’t think so
In my opinion if I only wanted to show a duel between a condition Necro vs thief, probably I would choose an heavy condition removal thief spec, relying on stealth in that case, that it’s not the best choice for tPvP anyway.

and tbh i have never seen a condi necro winning vs a s/d thief in a duel before…neither in streams nor on 1 vs 1 duel servers
but i appreciate your feedback and i will try my best to actually record tournament situations

Was looking for ventari, but would be fun in a sick, sadistic way to do thief duels too. I like dueling practice.

I’d be curious to see ele (any build) vs. valk warrior running the typical mace/shield + GS build.

Why are you guys making S/D thief to be some kind of god mode?

People who main thief knows it’s not that good and D/P and P/D thief is much better for 1v1s.

I do not though. I adapted to the meta: rolled a warrior.

i watched and was helpful in term of general mechanics. but if you want this for educ, i’d add some notes to video. what is general gameplay in terms of keeping distance. what are necro combos and rotation. what are thief telegraphs to watch for. with that kind of commentary it could be super useful. especially if you add those as captions to video itself. could be some work, but that kind of library prob would be most valuable asset ppl can learn from.
i agree that thief seemed somewhat apathic, mostly running in distance while necro kept hitting from range. if learning to fight thief, need to know what to do when they get in your face.
