i think the PvE / WvW players would rage much heheheh.
but for friendly fire enabled for sPvP i think it would be very interesting.
this means i would burn myself if my warrior fire off combustion shot at his feet.
though i am not sure if the game engine supports such a feature.

…would open up a world of grief in matchmaking.
I’m not gonna say aoe spam isn’t obnoxious and needs to be toned down but there’s probably much better ways to deal with it.

Add resources to all class so that there is more than just cooldowns limiting their use.
Also make ranged casts more telegraphed.
Not exactly ad hoc fixes but steps in the right direction.
Either reduce the damage from the AOE effects or reduce the “Area” affected by the skill. Man I just realized they got a lot of work to do at Anet.

This. Single target skills should always hit for more damage than general AOE. It should never even be close. It is way to easy to just pain circles on capture points and doesn’t really take much talent to do so.
Think they could go a long way with increasing the size of capture nodes. I notice aoe spam is the most frustrating when contesting a point and the aoe is completely carpeting the whole space.
Sometimes when It’s 1v1 I can see it as not such a bad thing where I have to choose between contesting that point or taking the damage (most likely sacrificeing some CD to counter it) but when there is 2 or more cleave classes there it is just too much.
When on a big point like graveyard this is lessened to a degree.

I agree, and a similar point/feedback has been raised many times. In response we got skyhammer, which has smaller points with less room to move away from points unless you feel like instant death; and the most important point is the smallest of all with holes all around.

You first should give us more details about your idea of “friendly fire”:
Are talking about:
Implementing friendly fire for every skill?
for every aoe, including cleave?
for every field?
The next issue is:
As the title already says, the issue aren’t the aoes themselfes, it is the AoE SPAM.
For decreasing spam, methods could be: higher cooldowns, decreased durations or just a reduce in the acces to aoes for some professions.
Implementing friendly fire would harm a lot of “skilled” play.
E.g. Engi smoke bomb + toolbelt bomb -stealth
It might also harm shatter Mesmers (just imagine if they would also hit their own team). In addition, what’s with necros death shroud #4 and #5? Those skills arent usually the top example for AoE spam. However they would get affected by your suggestion. But every necro uses those skills, so basicly you would harm all of them.
In addition, what about those aoes which already affect allies and enemies? e.g. marks, symbols, chaos storm or null field?
Yeah, this would make EVERY game into forced 1v1s except for possibly thieves and spirit rangers, and maybe burst ele because everyone else has AoE/cleave embedded in very important skills and are actually incapable of not using this. Staff eles would literally be unusable, as would most warriors and even mesmers with their very limited amount of AoE would end up killing friends who just happen to be too close to the enemy.
So no, a thousand times over. Most classes/builds do not have the option to build single target only, not to mention that it would hit eles, who are already the weakest class, harder than anyone else.
Besides, if AoE was really the problem you would see rage threads about staff ele, seeing as AoE is everything we are, though we are pretty much never “braindead AoE spam” because that gets us killed.
Reduce aoe by reducing the need for it.
1) Smiter’s boon minion necros in pvp.
2) Make normal ranger spirits untargetable (minus elite). Projectiles go through them (minus elite.)
3) Reduce synergy between stealth and phantasms for mesmer. (Stealth kills phantasms?)(Stealth and Phantasm traits moved to same line (one or other)).
Or some other means to remove the NEED for aoe. Atm in the meta you must have aoe to beat meta builds.

Yes those are good solutions too.
I am not sure if there is skilled aoe spam- just aoe spam with different effects. Yes necros would also suffer. Some aoe could be non-friendly fire- like symbols.
Aoe is actually my friend because its easy to use with high ping, but atm it has too much impact for too little skill. Some (not all) ele skills are great examples of how aoe should work- obvious animation somewhat long cast time, best used with teamplay (stun/imob+ aoe etc).
Bad examples are bunkers/semi bunkers that can just lay aoe fields everywhere, while evading/blocking/invun/etc and do a lot of damage and cc without much skill or chance for counterplay.
But friendly fire would be amazing, just imagine the tears….
As I already said, I m no friend of AoE spam, but you suggestion is just a bad idea.
In addition, AoE is a good counter messure to AI builds.
So if you tone down AoE spam without also dealing with AI, AI builds will become even more “stronger” in a relative way, as there are less countermessures.
For the Cleave AoE damage Age of Conan had a great solution. Your main target gets hit for the full damage, the secondary targets get hit for I think it was 50% of the damage.
That way also the cleave AoE could be reduced.

Yes I can, and that is exactly the point. Like you say “mindlessly”.
There are so many skills that are just “mindless” aoe, requiring no skill to land, with no real downside for using them.
