Q:

Because it seems pretty darn near impossible to effectively overcome a team when there are 3 or more mesmers on a team (which seems pretty popular at this point).

My guild faced a team which had multiple mesmers, and they bragged it was 17 vs. the 5 of us.
We lost.

Have atleast two people on your team with good reliable AOE damage. bomb Engineer, Great Sword Guardian, or Elementalist. They can all dispatch the mesmers clones reliably effectively ridding of quite a bit of their damage source (shatters and illusions). Make sure to Mark the real mesmers (the one dodging and casting other skills and isnt glowing bright pink).

uMad pretty much nailed it already, bring the AOE & teamfights to the mesmers

don’t spread out to thin, call targets on the real mesmers as soon as they get out of stealth

thief works amazing vs mesmer aswell, d/d & s/p destroys them when their cooldowns are down and before that spam shortbow 1 it basically gets rid of illusions by itself

I have an answer: Run 2 Guardians 3 thief’s. Send 1 guardian to close point and let him afk there. Others go hard point which is usually mid. If you take mid leave another guardian there and then 3 thief’s roam where ever help is needed and target 1 person for insta kills.

This, also 1-2 axe rangers. I switch back to my axe as ranger when i encounter mesmers. Axe arcs through phantasms and illusions and you get to harm the mesmer eventually. Your dps output decreases a bit yet still you get to put a persistent pressure on the mesmer. Also a tip, alwasy focus on the pinky phantasms at first.

Well we still havent learned to play against mesmers after meeting at least one in every match for 4 weeks. So if you meet 3 mesmers in one team you’d probably need to practice for 12 weeks to beat them or develop strategies.

Dont forget how confusing and impossible to follow mesmers are. For this i recommend cleaning your room. Any chaos around your pc has the chance of focusing your attention away from those mesmers. Which is killer since you’re a noob if you cant beat mesmers, as anyone can do it if they just focus. You might wanna paint your walls a different color too, something more calming so you dont get confused so easily. Dont expect to beat mesmers unless you’re dedicated and skilled enough. Other than that they’re fine, you guys just cant put in the extra effort.

Get a bomb/grenade engineer and an elementalist on your team for team fight support damage, and at least two thieves to pin point and wreck the real mccoy mesmers. They need to be able to spot them well, and the rest takes care of itself. Haven’t encountered a good team that used 3 yet, but the above strategy works quite well on a team with 2.

Any tactic involving singling out mesmers or taking down their illusions falls apart if the mesmers are all running a different build. Some illusions are harmless, others must be killed before they can deal a ton of damage, and others must be avoided because they go boom. One of the mesmers is tanky, two are not, but one of the two that isn’t tanky also goes boom. By the time you’ve figured out which one is which and that to do, you’re 150 points behind.

That just means your stragety needs to be quickly adaptable.

AoE Damage is a good foundation to start against mesmers, but it’s not the whole of it. Illusions that go boom are only dangerous if you’re near them. It’s a good start to assume that all illusions must die as that’s essentially the strength of all mesmers. You leave them up, they can shatter you, or get close to be overwritten or killed for conditions.

Too many players go straight single damage in this game which really does give Mesmer’s the edge, as they’re a counter to that playstyle. More wide, AoE damage really does them in and singles them out for all the crowd control.

Actually GankSinatra pointed out what’s wrong with the mesmer class…so everyone has to focus every ounce of attention on the mesmer to kill him…yeah, good that he brings no team mates…and especially not to tournaments, eh?

last night for a laugh we made a team of identical mesmers with identical names, won easily, Imagine the surprise of the necro bunker build when a mesmer walks up , he prepares him self for his 1 v 1, then the mesmer drops a portal and 4 copies appear then suddenley bam 20 mesmers in front of him, fun times but it does show why mesmer stacking is so crazy, it really is hard to deal with one try multi especially with the same names except dashes etc above the letters and same looks.

Greatsword guardian: symbol of wrath → whirling wrath. AoE damage to kill all clones and the symbol is a light field so AoE condition removal for any mesmer traited to give conditions when clones are killed. That’s two moves in about 1 second.

Deals damage to all classes easily and destroys mesmers.

If you really can’t find the real one, I would advise glasses. It’s not hard.

There are some issues with mesmer stacking. It is pretty clear mesmers were designed with the thought that there’s only be one fighting you at a time. When you get 2-3 the chaos gets multiplied in a way that makes it mostly unmanageable. Especially when you have cheese like 3+ portals. Going through a portal needs to put your own portal on cooldown if you have it.

This. I would just add, have someone on “kill call” . The guy whose job is to call for targets and make him your assist. So he (whoevers best at Mesmer recognition) will tell you all to assist (Ctrl T) and focus one at a time. They blow up quick with a well timed “switch”.

I think the issue is mostly stacking mesmer’s. Sure 1 is easy enough to deal with. But most comp’s are running 2-3. Like a poster said earlier, when you portal in 4 mesmer’s and have an instant 20 man army, you can try to call assist target’s, aoe, or w/e, but you are still going to be rolled.

So the answer is to bascially use the other two OP classes to combat the OP mesmers…
