I’m firmly against the idea of progression being added to PvP in the way we saw with the new skills (25 skillpoints, fork over 40k glory for level tomes or go PvE for a full day!).

However, if an unlock system was paired with a tournament rank requirement, it could be very useful. I’ve seen top fifty players solo queue and wind up with rank 1s on their team who have obviously never PvPed before. This is really bad, both for the high ranked players, and the rank 1 who gets steamrolled all game!

Instead of basing these unlocks off of skillpoints/glory, what about if Arenanet locked tournament participation until rank 20, but had unlockable runes/skills/sigils/amulets every rank up until that point?

This would mean everyone playing in tournaments was still on a completely even level, but also gives a sense of progression and achievement to new players, while simplifying the amount of things they need to think about when first starting out.

To me this is advertising the lesser of a great many evils. If it tied to account rank, then I suppose it’s similar to LoL’s system where you don’t participate in ranked play til 30. Which is fine i suppose. Still they are slowly breaking away from the system that brought me to be interested in gw2 pvp.

This could be a good way to handle this, while hopefully helping some other issues.

One way to do this I’ve been thinking could work would be a little more work intensive on ANet’s side. If proper tutorials were implemented to teach the basics of sPvP and conquest mode in general, these unlocks could be rewards for completing them. Ideally, a short video, and a simulation with npcs similar to those in the HotM, would cover each topic. For each tutorial a player completes they will unlock a new item. To make this less of a hassle for experienced players, you should be able to skip the videos, and the simulations should be relatively quick and easy if you understand the topic of the tutorial well (but hopefully a challenge if you don’t).

However they end up doing it, the biggest thing now is for us to throw out ideas that we wouldn’t hate to see implemented. Hopefully the devs will like one and we won’t end up with huge gold or time investments needed.

Well, I agree, I don’t think unlocks should be added.

This was my suggestion to adding unlocks in a more constructive way, at least, compared to the 25 skill point requirement for the new skills.

The ONLY way i see these unlocks helping new players would be if they implement a separate queue to players from rank 1-20 and they played between eachother, and along the path to getting rank 20, they would slowly unlock ALL the runes for FREE. It’s the only implementation that makes sense if they really want this to help new players. Anyway, I’ve never even seen any new player complaining that their brains can’t process the amount of runes lol

it took you a full day to run a couple of skill challenges? (they’re the ^ icons on the map)
firstly you could use a birthday experience thing to instantly get to lv20, then you only have a few more ^ things to do, and you can do them in the starting zones.

if you don’t have a birthday experience thing (not sure who doesn’t!) you could even just ask a high lv friend/guildy to run you through 25 of them, 30 mins – 1 hour and your done.

or if you have a high level char (most people have atleast 1) you could just do them yourself quick and easy, there are 202 skill challenges so you’re not exactly short on options!

though i agree we shouldn’t need to do this for everything new in pvp (just like all of the current things that don’t need unlocking in pve to use in pvp.

luckily most of the new heals are useless anyway so you don’t need to bother getting em :P
