This is the number one reason that makes me logout after a few sPvP matches. I don’t even care about matchmaking. I’m fine being teamed up with rank 8s vs 40s… I really am, I will give them some tips and they will do better next time.

But getting chain matches vs superpugs and having 0% chance to win before the game starts is just so demoralizing. I really really really love this game and this is (for me) the most un-fun and unfair feature in sPvP currently.

Having put many hours in Starcraft 2 and LoL, I feel those concepts are borderline mandatory. Matchmaking is more complicated and I really understand it’s taking them so long to come up with a solution. But throwing pugs against premades game-after game-after game is a crime.
And in the end it really hurts both sides. Back in the day where all my friends were still playing, we would queue as 5 man and destroy low ranked pugs. In was honestly sad. Literally, I felt bad for the other teams. Not because they “sucked” but because I was the fun killer for their evening.

It’s really a shame, GW2 has so MANY things right and it’s the lack of basic features that hurt it so bad.

I am a solo tpvper (my friends show no interest in pvp) and I play tournaments solo on a daily basis. The biggest problem I have with tpvp is not with playing against premades, I have beaten premades before with other solo-ers who communicated well and most importantly “wanted to win”.

At the moment the solo queue is plagued with players who do not give a flying cat about the match. Yes, I’m talking about the afkers, leavers and the noobs who have no idea what to do. Problems will still remain if a solo queue is introduced, there will still be afkers, leavers and noobs.

The only way to solve this is to tackle the issue at it’s core. We need to stop these afkers from afking. We need to stop these leavers from leaving. And we need to stop these noobs from noobing.

Compare the pugs of Dota 2/LoL to GW2. They are of completely different calibers. “Most” moba pugs are so dedicated to winning, they understand this word called “Teamwork”.

This is basically the reason why I stopped playing months ago.

If you join with a team, you’ll most likely face a bunch of pubs and destroy them.
If you join alone, you’ll most likely face a premade and get stomped.

Also, daily PVP achievements injected a bunch of PVErs into the system who couldn’t give half a kitten about PVPing and are in just for those laurels.

The only thing that could make me consider getting into the PVP scene again is the creation of a system that caters to both solo players and team players. We’ll see what happens when Custom Arenas go live for everyone I guess, but I’m not getting my hopes high.

(class stronger than mine) is OP. (my class) is underpowered. (classes I beat easily) are fine.

Definitely beaten some of the “best” as a solo queue. Problem is the leavers, afkers, and the no shows. The MMR is a bit wonky too because after you beat some people who are like r75+ on the leaderboards you shouldn’t be paired up with rank 1 who says, “I have never played pvp before. I am a WvW guy”.

Why should they care if Arenanet doesnt, though? Cant blame them for not caring about yet another fight against a premade. Besides even though Gw2 doesnt have a sub, in pve that is, now the amazing pvp part has hotjoin option sliders for gems olol, there are games actually focused on e-sport that are actually free to play without any need to buy a box for 60 bucks. So how many amazing players do you really hope to encounter here anymore, anyway? How many new guys do you think are coming in with that attitude? Leaderboards are a grind, its up to arenanet to foster an environment where people want to actually improve. It must be measurable, it must be meaningful.

And if this was an e-sports game with a healthy playerbase, there would be rating, and you would quickly rise out of the rating pool of ’afker’s, leavers, and noobs’. Just like, you know, every single serious e-sports game since ever?

Noobs, leavers and afkers get away with it because there’s is nothing on the line for them.
If the game had rating and your kitten and ladder progression was on the line you would queue to fight for your win.
When you queue for your daily laurel it’s so easy to say “Ahh kitten it, I’ll try again in 10 mins”.
Adding rating and ACTUAL MMR to this equation instantly solves this problem. Leavers and people who insta-leave the game stay at the bottom of the pool fighting each other.

One can only dream.

This makes me really sad. Because when the game launched, there was a HUGE competitive community converging to GW2 from various games. The game had so much potential, it really did. It wasn’t shallow hype, coating a trash shameless cash-in game (like Warhammer online or SWTOR).

90% of all those people left and never came back because the game lacked (and still does) core competitive features.
I don’t even dare imagine how big the competitive community would of been if the game had an actual ladder since release.

I’m on the same boat. I mostly solo pvp and when I get grouped with a pug that wants to win, a victory is that much more sweet when it’s against a premade. There should be ranked and unranked 5v5’s so that those who want to practice on their own with a pug should not have their rating affected.

I don’t have much hope for custom arenas atm because it’s still conquest being shoved down our throats. I really really don’t understand why there can’t be another game mode that’s not conquest. GvG, CTF, KotH, etc., and the list goes on and on and on…

No its not the laurels, because you can only get it by doing pve daily OR pvp daily and if pve’ers are getting laurels from pvp dailies, all that means is PvP dailies are too easy and quick to get which means they need to make it harder.

What the issue is, people that don’t care leaderboard rank or who are very terrible at pvp are FARMING glory via tpvp because theres no punishment for them, they don’t lose tournament tickets trying, they are already 0% on leaderboards hence they have nothing to lose and everything to gain, by extra 200 glory, a chest, leaderboard ranking, they can work on there champion title and so on. Basically they are farming glory, titles, and pvp gear, why would a terrible pvp’er do hotjoin instead of tpvp when hotjoin only offers glory and a worse title than tpvp.

Theres just no punishment for losing a tpvp game for people are very terrible at pvp and they can redo it as many times as they want to. That is why ANET needs to back back tournament tickets, so terrible pvp’ers cannot farm tpvp all day long, that will also make people group more because they will want actually win more than get glory in tpvp because you get another tournament ticket when you win.

Ever since ANET toke away tournament tickets an increase in people who don’t care a lot if they win have been flooding the tpvp.

I understand the AFK or leavers, sure a punishment “1 hour unable to queue” is OK, but do you want to punish people for not being good, really!!??
The thing that is probably happening is simple, there isn’t enough players queueing at the same time of enough skill levels for the match making system to work. There is no match making system that can make up for a lack of playerbase.

In my experience queues pop instantly and still end up with mismatches as terrible as 3x <10’s, 1x <20, and me 49 against a full 40+ premade. It wasn’t exactly an isolated incident either, because it happened 4 matches in a row after that. There’s really just no good reason for that to happen. Ever.

For starters, pitting Premades against Pugs and then rating them based on the outcome is laughable. Those are two entirely different levels of game play. But to not restrict the matchmaking by tiers of experience, either ranks or matches played, makes no sense at all, and strikes me as something that should be integral to the match making process. Without it there is simply no way to “protect the new player experience”, which is a fundamental point of having the MMR in the first place, as well as protect the competitive integrity of ranked matches, the other fundamental point of the MMR.

Ranked matches are a bit of joke at the moment though, and the leader boards are just a complete farce. This issue really needs to move to the front of ANet’s queue for “what to address next”.

2 steps are necessary:

Separate solo queue from 5-man team queue.

Break up solo queue into tiers.
Bronze
Silver
Gold

Matchmaking system will only pull from the pool of players within the same tier as you. Bronze-rated players only play with bronze-rated players. Silver-rated players only play with silver-rated players. Etc.
