I Don't Know How Else to Say It
Keep at it and just imagine how finally honed your skills will be when they get the nerf bat upside their head and actually have to L2P meanwhile your already a motherkittening juggernaught for playing on hard mode the entire time…

You either play a thief or a bunker !.
Make sure you make enuff tourney tickets before this game is becomes a sheeple USD fleecing machine!
Rgds,
Before the flame war starts, please hear me out…or see me out..whatever the text translation is.
I have done nothing but champion for ANet and go to bat for them, but I just can’t take this PvP anymore.
I have come across few games with worse balance issues than this game, worse CC spamming and worse “Alpha strike” (when they blow a CD and kill you within seconds)
Well play better! Yes I agree, there is always something that can be done, I have watched videos, learned class mechanics by playing as the classes I have trouble with and done my research on what to do in several situations.
Well get better by playing! I have played a lot and specifically geared my skills/gear to try and prevent some of this burst.
What has it done? Nothing, you still get killed within seconds, there is no DR on anything so if you come across a few classes that can CC, you might as well go get a drink cause you wont be playing your character at all as you watch them lay on the ground.
This isn’t skillful pvp…it doesn’t take skill to pop a couple CD’s and kill someone within a couple seconds. I am sorry if you think that is what it is, but it is not. There is little strategy in the game modes as well because a lot of it weighs heavily on your group make up.
I wont even get started on bugged skills…
All in all, I am gonna give it some more time and really try to love this PvP, but at the current rate…no one I know enjoys it and we have all been hardcore PvPers for years and years in many different games. The CC, Burst, unbalanced classes, BUGS, and static game mode just ruin it.
Anyways, I am sure I will get a bunch of hate replies or “l2play” comments but please understand, I give feedback because I care and I want the devs to see not everyone is just happy as can be so maybe it can help in making the game better.
Seriously pls guys….I don’t get it at all…I’m playing a freaking ele( the profession with the most whine threads) and I don’t see any of the problems you mention, it’s really a matter of l2p man, during every fight I’m well prepared to be CCed at least 4-5 times in row, jeez during tournaments I prepare myself to be the target n1 and still do great
I’m sorry man, but the issues a lot of people are encountering with bugged skills/traits, insta gib classes, chain cc and everything….this really isn’t a l2play matter.

it’s true, pack stun breaks and invuls for PvP or you’re basically making it easy on them.
I was hoping to avoid the cliche “L2P” though.
you can’t really deny the flood of backstabbing thieves that never reappear from stealth and mesmers flinging phantasms though. balance is a bit whack atm, but it’ll get better.
patience
I’ve stayed at this party entirely too long
The bunker builds problem will be resolved in due time, there’s nothing much to do about atm and I wonder if nerfing bunker builds is really the way to go.
With the amount of ele whiners playing staff arcane bunker or guardians wammo wannabe, it would not be wise for Anet to flat nerf those builds.
The only solution would be to increase the number of boon removal skills in game and to extend the use of poison to other professions also.

On top of stun braker, you’ve got interrupts also that you need to save for those chain CC sequences, professions which use CC chains tend to become predictable so you can sort of try to develop a counter strategy that works for you.
For example I use d/d ele to counter every other profession now, using the same build I simply change approach, from counter oriented to extremely aggressive style ( against mesmers where speed is everything).
Against those CC sequence I make great use of chill ( which I can stack up to 14s in one go based on the enemy) and burst them down afterward ( as they’re extremely squishy compared to me)

Until when will we have to endure game after game ALL with rogues, ALL with instagibbing, ALL with delayed / bugged unstealth, ALL with 2 seconds deaths, ALL with some cheesy 3 button FOTM classes designed by a 5 old?
There are some in depth classes like Ele, some well made classes like Guardian and engy but the rest is no better than playing WoW.
Yeah I mean, I really appreciate people like Arheundel giving advice and what he does. I am not one to make a post and just go NO PVP SUCK blah blah…
I would LOVE to hear strategies from everyone and how they are dealing with it, I am desperate to fall in love with this PvP because I like ANet and I like GW2, but not enough to stay silent when there are clearly broken things.

Sure I’ll be glad to help , I’m an ele but I’ll ask my friends to give you suggestions when playing : guardian-mesmer-thief-warrior, sorry no rangers, engineers or necromancers in my friend list.
I disagree with the dying in seconds part. To me that is a very, very rare thing to happen. I know it gets said a lot, and it’s not the ultimate solution or anything, but dodging the burst is quintessential in improving your play. Of course, you can’t always do that, so you need to always be equipped with backup plans. Possibly multiples of them until you get more used to things. Overall though, I think the best piece of advice these forums should be giving is not to dodge more, but to dodge less with more precision during their peak outputs of either control or damage.
I primarily play the Engineer, and my only backup plan in the sense of things is 25k Health and Runes of the Earth. I don’t die to any of the traditional combos whether it’s Engineer Lightning, Warrior 100B, or Thief Backstab. Heck I don’t even die to the Shatter Mesmer combo, and that strips my Protection. The vast majority of my burst mitigation is preemptive through blinds, dodging, and two high cooldown pieces of control. I very, very rarely am even caught by a burst combo, but when I am I don’t die. I think every build needs either a team behind them, or a way to deal with these.
The vast majority of my fights are 20 seconds or longer in duration. Heck, with higher skill in my experience, the fight takes exponentially longer. I have a couple of buddies in which my fights always last more then 60 seconds. Given, they don’t use the burst builds (or straight up bunker builds), because they don’t find them very effective. Honestly, this burst phenomena is frankly not effective in a 1v1. In team fights I see more value in it, but it takes coordinated bursts and control.
I’ll admit I used to always use burst builds, and I used to play a Warrior. It’s just not that good once you find real opponents. These combos should just never land. You can use skill to achieve this, but in my opinion and experience the advantage is by far with the defender. Unless of course, you both don’t see the combo coming and lack backup plans. I’m not saying it’s easy, but it’s possible. I don’t consider myself that great at the game, and I can do it. I really think everyone else can do it too. I don’t even think practice is the fastest way to learn this, but knowledge and experience. Play all the “overpowered” stuff (or have close friends that do it for you), and you learn how to counter it.

To offer a converse point… I was frustrated with PvP for years in other games for many reasons… I like aesthetic rewards, I like being able to experiment with builds and still making them viable, I like never having to PvE to PvP.
And with the devotion of the Anet staff, I truly feel like it’s already great and only going to get better from here.
I find the PvP competitive and fun, and quitre rewarding, although there are many things that need to be tweaked, obviously. PvP feels liberating… I’ve played nearly every class except casters in PvP and each one felt like I could truly express my own creativity in the build and still win, and that’s huge for me.
No need to keep up with gear, and no monthly payment.
You can walk away anytime and come back later as things get fixed/balanced.
Conquest is ruining pvp.
Outnumbering the opponent is far more effective than knowing your class and executing well. free tpvp shakes out to who’s got a headset, and paid tpvp is just gonna take that reactionary shuffle-board aspect to the next level while further perpetuating the bunker fixation
But if we get another option in the form of 3v3 the sky will fall out…
Meanwhile, that’s what’s happening to players who desire such

I, too, am an Ele trying to spread the word of our excellence. Honestly, I run less than 15k HP, 2500 armor, and I don’t die in seconds unless I’m zerged. Even then, I can usually last 5, sometimes more if I’m really on my game and get lucky. Thieves and Warriors aren’t even a problem anymore.
I do agree that bunkers are silly.
This game has this fantastic new invention called CC removal. Try it.
This argument has caused many disagreements within the MMO community. Most of it dealing with fear of losing the advantage. However, some people think that skill should be the substance to fill the cracks where the developers fail to. In my eyes people are misunderstanding the difference between “balance” and “skill”. “Learn to play” is a counter argument which factors skill in to the equation. Skill is not what is being discussed however. For example: when two fighters enter a ring they are all given the same equipment to fight with, and yes, skill provides us with a victor. Now, say fighter A was given gloves with iron rolls in them, and fighter B provided with normal gloves. While fighter B could learn to fight against such a disadvantage and still win, why should he? It’s an obvious flaw within the balance of the fight. In game, when one class has a singular move which can out damage (percentage of health, as to eliminate the “glass cannon” argument) an entire combination of 3, or 4 moves of another class and provide the same outcome, then how can you justify balance? Is balance not the relationship in which one class has to another providing equal results (without factoring in skill) just as the fighter’s equipment?

Plus 3 stunbreaking Cantrips?

You do realise how powerful elementalists are don’t you in bunker spec form?
It’s not a matter of l2p at all. I played in a hot join last night and there were 3 eles, all with exactly the same setup, sceptre/dagger etc, and all 3 were equally ridiculous to fight against. They all used the same rotations, had the same ability to heal up to almost full and could kite endlessly. The game was farcical at the end.
When you see randoms playing the same class doing equally well against everyone they face, it’s not that they all happen to be being played by skilled players, or the players they face on other classes are awful, it’s the class design that’s the issue.
Do people honestly think ‘Wow!! i’m amazing on this class with this build! I was really bad on other classes, but i seem to absolutely kill playing this. It’s clearly a L2P issue for everyone i’m up against!.’
Chris – i get what u ar saying, and like HACKKS said earlier: patience.
I’m playing guardian. I had rly big problem with warriors on the begining of the game, so i focused on killing every one of them in sight. I feel lack of busrt dmg, i’m not fond of bunker builds, and i rly dont like spirit weapon spec (if u want computer to play for u, run chess on PC with computer on both sides and just choose yours) and i use it only if i want to troll ppl and be OP.
Back in subject – warriors 100 blades – u need 1 stun break or 1 good dodge, after they burn they skill just kill them they have nothing else. Ppl doesnt know how to play when they miss they burst and my greatest burst dmg – around 9k (yeah, u heard – 8,5k for sure on guardian) is from rolling behind 100 blades warrior and doing my burst in his back, sweet.
Later i had rly problem with mesmers, after phantasm buff – my strategy… put target on real mesmer, kill phantasm when u see them and a mesmer in the meantime, like some side task.
Latelly thiefs – save dodge roll only for running from heart seeker (learn the animation) and pistol wheep. Try using blind, aegis if u can and retaliation to scare them.
I’m will gladly help if u want to spar with guardian and i would have lots of questions about your game play and prof to. I want to learn this game and kick butt especially of those who have edge becaus of lack of balance in some aspects.

Chris – What profession + build are you playing?
Damage resistance only goes so far, even “tank” builds tend to get dropped pretty fast when focused or in some cases just bursted down. The key is damage avoidance (stun breaks, blocks, dodges, and in some cases positioning and team movement). Sorry if you already know this, but I didn’t at first and I was just as frustrated.
It sounds trivial but I stopped getting killed by thieves pretty much altogether when I really practiced breaking stuns, dodging, etc.
Know your place and stand where you should be. It is not a 1v1 game, play smart. Video is just for watching for fun. Yes, I sometimes get kill by second just because I am not in the right place.
I play only support build, not DPS. It just follow by what I play from GW1 and later on WOW. I am quite happy that those DPS use all skills on me and try to kill me.
Bunker is the really issue, it is not unbalanced, but it is boring the games out. However, it can be balance by maps, just change the map. The point holding is not a good model in my view. Remember all ways remember a important point: Beside the skills, maps also balance the game.
I feel that the a lot of these balance problems, survival issues, etc.. arise from a few things. sPvP is essentially for grinding glory. Why grind glory? Perhaps you like upgrading your armor skins, I, for one, fall into this boat. The zergfest sucks, but it is a fairly simple way to quickly get glory. If your looking for competitive game play, sPvP is not where you will find it. People need to get this out of their heads.
Secondly, tPvP can, and will be for the most part, extremely frustrating if you do not queue with a group. Even more so, a group which is able to verbally communicate. In group fights, experienced teams WILL focus players. If you solo queue, or even queue with a friend, advancing to the 3rd round is rare. classes are not balanced for 1v1, nor should they be. A well played and organized group is essential.

Depends on what I’m up against. Generally, though, 8v8 I run Signet of Earth or Arcane Wave, 5v5 I run Mist Form for stomps.
Use cc breaking skills (some have traits aswell) , i roll with a thief and a guardian and that’s really a matter of build , if u get toughness in a decent amount you wont get a 2 second death, it really goes to a matter of playstyle , like when i go thief i go full glass cannon, while guardian i stack some toughness to have more durability, i’d say in spvp all in all there’s alot of balance, on wvw glass cannons usually dominate in most situations , imo spvp is quite fine, wvw seems more problematic now
anyway ive learned that once u play and understand a class you should have the tools to mitigate dmg or stuns, im not saying this out of hate … but l2p is a good solution

Oh ok roll all defensive build and 3 defensive utility just to compete got cha.
All seriousness there is a problem with the pvp in this game most of the time people don’t complain if they are obviously playing mesmer, guardian, thief.
They are just the most enlightened players in the game I bet if it was switched to those 3 professions being useless and necros, rangers, eles were top dog then it would be a different story.
The only other MMO I’ve played is SWTOR. My character, a charr warrior, has been lvl 80 for a few weeks but I still feel very much like a noob. Believe me, I get “pwned” plenty in sPvP, but..
Man alive, I love it! The pace is insane, I like the easy in and out, I really love feeling that, even though I was beat, it clearly was NOT that, despite my hours of grinding, my character was horribly out-geared.
In sPvP, I’m surprised that PuGs don’t coordinate more with chat, but I expect that to change over time. Certainly constructive use of chat has greatly increased in WvWvW.
One thing is sure: I won’t be going back to SWTOR.
