I dare you to play Non-Meta
Yes. That is exactly the challenge. Try to play something, anything, without meta builds, or without the elite trait line, and see what happens.
The challenge is to create your own build, something completely different, but not meta. With that in mind you can see how “beautiful” the balance is, and how they do “not love” money while “not making” you to buy expansion.

Meta builds are “meta” because meta builds are builds that are extremely well put together and synergize well with the current game mode.
Believing that non-meta builds should be on par with meta builds is essentially saying “please make craptastic builds equal to well thought out builds”
Now yes you could argue that there needs to be more builds considered “meta,” but people really need to abandon this delusion that balance means every possible build is equal.

This isn’t a play your way it’s a play whatever the meta is for that season type of game.

^^^ This is the game you’re playing.
There will be at least 5 (now there’s no class stacking) characters (profession+build) to choose from if you want to make an optimal team. Outside of optimal your ‘just’ having fun.
Thats’ the game. Team game is balanced – professions / builds are not.
This is either fun for you or it’s not.

There is so much synergy within some classes that it becomes simply unfair.
Mostly they certainly are well thought out builds, by people who deserve all the success they get by figuring out these builds, but when some fotm class hopper rolls you with little to no effort, stands there getting smacked by all your heavy hitters while dodge rolling your autoattacks, it’s disheartening to see how little effort it takes to win in this game.

Now this has nothing to with the game design, that’s an MMR issue. There is no way your going to win a game in high elo JUST because you are running a meta build; if anything having your own build will keep you alive longer, leading to a win, since at least 30% of high elo player know most meta build and their respective combo.
I’m totally non-meta…. still have fun. I even play rifle engi some times to train and not rely on my hammer defences. This is my current build.

Wait when you say without meta OR without elite, do you mean either without one or without the other, or do you mean with neither? My build above uses scrapper for survival. My Rifle ranged trainging build that doesn’t use scrapper has a hard counter that makes it less enjoyable in certain matches where I’ll just be plastered. The scrapper build is a good all round PUG build.
So with rifle I do something CC nasty like this….

I played a non meta Druid build for a lotta games during tournament with much success. Was the #2 class I used for the win games on 3 different classes Chivos.
I never checked Metabattle for Ranger when I made it, I just put in things to mostly counter DH trap spam and bunker Elementalist.

Took the dare last night. Had fun but it was a learning curve to get back into thinking like a non bruiser. Found that rangers wrecked my rifle power build without the refelcts and that I am bad at using toolkit. Would say I was more situationally effective, but less all rounded.
