A game, by definition should be fun. Regardless of rhetoric, when a person gets pounded repeatedly they will tend to either leave or get bitter and angry.
Witness the current conditions in PvP.
To answer the OP’s question: There are too few people playing,. So the game has no choice but to match new players against strong players.. I think that the game should distribute experienced and new players on each team. This doesn’t seem to be happening.

Every PvP game’s Ranked mode is stressful for a lot of players—League of Legends, Smite, etc. The point of Ranked is to climb as high as you can, yet the majority of players sits in the average area which provides the said stress. Players always want to be the “best”, hitting top this and top that, yet when they’re in the average zone they realize they’re a loong way back from where they want to be. Plus, people get really salty in chat.
So when these players lose a game, they get really stressed out because they get held back from hitting the top rankings.
It’s not just GW2, every game has something like this…
Okay so now on-topic, a lot of plat players are pretty average especially after the ranking threshold adjustment. Just practice, get better specs, find a good duo, and carry your way into victory. I heard somewhere that players can queue with other players within 700 rating from their rating so don’t be surprised if you’re put in a high-end or low-end game. The population isn’t high.
On that note, you said you wanted to learn how to play better. Unranked is better for that IMO. Grab a group of players/people you know and queue into unranked for practice. I recommend playing Ranked after you’ve mastered the builds you run.

Why do I always have to go against plats when I’m nowhere near plat? All I want to do is learn how to play PvP, but I can’t learn when my team is basically being spawncamped all and every game.
It basically sounds like for both your own progression and the other players goodwill, it’s best if you stick with unranked for now till you feel content. I usually do that when Im testing something really new, as I also dont want to shaft my fellow teammates.
I used to be a power ranger, now not sure anymore

If we’re getting technical, “Fun” is also subjective as well. Some people may enjoy the challenge as it potentially grants an opportunity to improve one’s skill. Not saying everyone does (obv looking at this post some people don’t), however some people do.

What rank are you? And how do you know you are playing against platinum players? Do you also know what rank your teammates are?
A friend of mine, he’s was in tier 3 gold when he started and had dropped down.
Me and my partner also duo often, and I will agree with this there are /alot/ of plats in a tier 2 and tier 3 gold matches.
I can understand for tier 3 gold, but why in tier 2 gold are their plats between 1500-1570?
What rank are you? And how do you know you are playing against platinum players? Do you also know what rank your teammates are?
It’s not hard to tell. The amount of points you gain/lose gives you a hint. For instance, if you’re in gold 3 and you get blown away in a near-shutout and only lose 5 points when a typical loss costs you more like 14 points, you can be sure there were players on the opposing team that were FAR above you in rating.
Worse, you can also be sure you had some higher rating players on your team who never had a chance due to poor matchmaking, and yet lost quite a lot more points just because you were on their team!
You have to figure that if there are fewer than 250 players in the 1600+ rating bracket, and only a small fraction of that number competing at any given time, the higher you go the more you will have to deal with poor matchmaking like this.
It’s a shame because, in my experience, matchmaking throughout the gold tiers is actually quite good. It feels competitive and close-ish games (within 150 points) are the norm. Very few games fall far outside of the average range in terms of points gained/lost.
I don’t know what they can do about this. If they put a lower ceiling on rating such as limiting it to within 100 rating points, players at 1900+ will find they will never get a match even if they hang out in the queue for hours. And because there is such a significant difference in skill between a top 10 player and a top 100 player, when they do get matches it will likely end up very lopsided anyway.
Since it seems matchmaking works fairly well (at least in gold), I don’t see that there’s much to be gained from rocking the boat for them. So what do you do to resolve this problem? I just don’t know.
Why do I always have to go against plats when I’m nowhere near plat? All I want to do is learn how to play PvP, but I can’t learn when my team is basically being spawncamped all and every game.
Because the game is so power creeped that everyone quit. When everyone quit you get less players in the matchmaking queue so the matchmaker has to make really bad games. This results in more people quitting. This is how games die and gw2 pvp is dead
