Arenanet and fellow sPvP’ers, I see a lot of negativity on the sPvP forums regarding Guild Wars 2 sPvP and I disagree with most of them. I actually like conquest, there is a lot more strategy in conquest than a lot of people are willing to admit. I am going to name the things I love about Guild Wars 2 sPvP!

1. Action Combat: What other mmorpg has this? Tera, but Tera doesn’t have the E-sport potential Guild Wars 2 has, nor the popularity! I love Action Combat, to be able to dodge, evade, use abilities to move cross the map quicker… the combat is good and addictive.

2. 5v5 Conquest: With a real team, voice communication and good players it will make for an excellent PvP experience.

3. No leveling, no gear grind: Instantly I can make any profession I wish and play it on an even playing field with others, I can learn and experiment and improve as a PvP’er.

4. Different roles: Yes, I actually like having super high damage Thieves and Warriors, I like having super defensive Guardians and Elementalists. Now we need some increase in some professions condition potential and roles, like necromancer and ranger and the team setups and meta will become even better.

5. Amazing maps: Excluding raid on the capricorn of course, which is the worst map I have ever seen in any game, even worse than WoW’s alterac valley. The other three maps are amazing, I like them all and they all feel unique and have their own little differences in tactics.

6. Awesome group fights: The group fights in Guild Wars 2 are amazing compared to other mmorpg’s, the added strategy and tactics for the downed state and the decisions you make when an ally or enemy goes down can be massive. Sometimes it is better not to stomp, sometimes it is better not to rez, it all comes with experience and I enjoy it a lot.

7. Rewards: No stats, just pure looks. Sure it has a bit of a grind feel to it, but once you get the ones you want you know you are going to feel epic and play epic. Also the sPvP mystic forge gives you something to do with items that you don’t need

It’s time we show some positive feedback, people only talk about things they don’t like, what about things you do like? Please share what you do like about Guild Wars 2

I agree with pretty much all of your arguments.
Once ANet implements things that a good eSport title needs (rankings, spec mode, casual friendly pvp) gw2 might become the best mmorpg eSport ever.

Even tho I don’t know about the Conquest Mode to be the best gamemode for an eSport. But well, we will see how things develop.
I definitely trust ANet and if they keep up the good work this game is going to be huge.

@ehtom, I don’t play backstab build :p I also spend a lot of time on my alts, especially warrior just love norn male warrior. Have been practicing as bunker elementalist too but I am not that good at it lol.

@aexy, I think that casuals would enjoy this game a lot more if the sPvP was 5v5 so it doesn’t feel as zergy, also the better players would be in tournemants so they would have fair and fun fights. I am actually quite happy with the way things are going for a non subscription fee mmo, in 1 more day we have new update and PvP information go Arenanet!

Well tPvP is the same as sPvP only with better organization and 5v5 instead of 8v8. Would love sPvP to become 5v5 as well. Not all of my arguments lean towards tPvP, maybe one or two.

Actually, the difference is so big, that it makes an incredible difference which one we’re discussing.

Spvp strategic? Communication? Roles? Good group fights?
I hardly see anything in your list that fits spvp.

The maps are the same, but being with 8v8 on a 3 point map is a failure, no matter how well the maps are designed.
And for me personally: no matter how good the maps are, they still lack variety in game modes. Capture point only goes so far.

Nice that you enjoy spvp, but in your post I only see arguments relating to tpvp, sorry.

And that’s important: because many of the complaints about pvp in this game come from that very issue: the difference between spvp and tpvp.

@kimbald,

sPvP does have strategy but it comes down to a personal level, not a group level. I see a lot of good group fights when the numbers are equal and below 3 if sPvP is 5v5 then it will be so good, trust me.

Variety in game modes is something that they will adjust in the future, they clearly stated that conquest would be the mode for release and a lot of people enjoy conquest. Personally I enjoy death match and conquest more than kill the lord or capture the flag.

If spvp will be 5v5 we’ll be discussing a different game.

I would love spvp to be 5v5! But currently it isn’t.

As for variety: if they add more game modes, people can chose. That’s what fun is all about: not being forced into anything too much.

Spvp has group fights, zerging group fights. When they happen to be more or less even, by mere coincidence, they can be fun indeed. However, on most occasions they are uneven, with too many people involved, and they are just a mess.

The only role I see doing well in spvp is burst. Support hardly matters, since most of the time you’re either outnumbered anyhow, or you outnumber them and than your ‘support’ effort isn’t even needed.

Communication in spvp? I just haven’t seen it yet, not ever. No one calls out point targets, no one calls incomings because defending simply isn’t done. Not that anyone seems to care about going out to help anyhow.
People just run in groups from point to point, mostly avoiding the other group, but hoping to catch the easy kills who are running alone.

This whole zerg playstyle, a consequence of being with too many on a 3 point map, even negates the gear level basic. When you outnumber others, it doesn’t even matter if their gear is the same as yours or not. You just zerg them down.
Only when a whole team would outgear the others, it would matter again.

As for balance: most spvp games I see have mostly mesmers, than thiefs, warriors… and we go down the line of best solo burst to worst.

Sorry to be so negative, but I personally think they are messing up bigtime with the spvp design.

IF they make it 5v5, than I’ll gladly change my opinion.
For now, I’ll clearly state that pvp in this game has disapointed me massively.

I bought GW2 believing the claims it was a pvp game (as well as a great pve ‘leveling’ game).
It’s not, not for me. It lacks variety, it lacks a good play format for casual players in pvp. An yes: it even lacks balance at this point.

The underlying mechanic and “flow” of pvp is really good and has potential. However, it suffers currently at the moment from…
1. class balance
2. broken mechanics (e.g. minion AI)
3. bugs (e.g. necro still has about 90 class bugs)
4. Giving class traits, abilities some synergy with the class’ mechanic (e.g. necro’s death shroud has not much synergy with a condition build apart from soaking up some announced shots…which makes for bland gameplay)
5. various other issues like the render bug of stealth
6. lack of maps
7. setup of pvp (e.g. spvp mechanics reward the mindless herd while punishing team-oriented gameplay like defending isn’t rewarding because you get outnumbered and just trampled. And even if you can get one down against the odd…you earn zero points for it)

All in all…there needs quite some work to be done.
