I’ve crafted a couple of cool looking pieces called Pit Fighter for my Warrior, using free tournament tokens + crystal + dust + item token. I got to rank 10 and tried to craft some shoulders with a deer token + crystal + dust, but they just produced crappy looking chain things. I was hoping higher rank tokens would produce better looking items? Should I just stick to using free tournament tokens? But then what’s the point of the animal tokens if they don’t give better looking gear?

tournament tokens are basically higher rarity (or should be more prestige) than deer tokens. I suppose they level is somewhere between deer / wolf
but thats my personal opinion and in fact what you need is

here you see what armor sets are in what category and how common or rare they are.

Thanks for the links, but that’s nothing I didn’t already know about. For example, when using free tournament tokens on a heavy armor piece, what dictates if it’s a Pit Fighter or Armageddon piece?

I think it’s the Arcane Fragment (orb, crystal, sliver):

Free Tournament
Arcane Orb = Worn Scale, Pit Fighter (2nd in PvP locker)
Arcane Crystal = Pit Fighter (2nd in PvP locker), Armageddon
Arcane Sliver = Armageddon, Heavy Plate (I suspect this might be a bug, as it’s a very plain set)

It says so right there dude…
