I find PvP in GW2 pretty interesting, and it is something I want to get more into. I play Solo Arena primarily. After having levelled my Norn Ranger to 80, I have spent a lot of time trying to get better at PvP with him. Trying different builds, strategies and reading a lot of guides as to how to approach the PvP areas of the game.

But honestly right now I just die. Basicly. I try to be as aware of everything – dodge at the right times and do my best. But honestly with Ranger it feels like I picked the worst profession to learn PvP with. Some profs (Warrior, D/D Ele, Minion Necro) are outright unkillable for me, unless I get to stand far away and fire arrows as I please. Been running a Longbow/Greatsword build. I always get zerged down within two seconds, and solo arena feels like a rather ungrateful place to learn, as you can’t expect people to come and help – even if you call for it.

I’d like some tips as to what profession is a good “beginner” profession to play – one that is easily approachable and a less brutal learning curve.

Warrior. Turreteer. MM.

Warrior is probably your best bet getting started in PvP.
Most builds on warrior are easy to learn & get good results.

Longbow/greatsword ranger is a pretty unforgiving build to start out with. There are other ranger builds you could try that are slightly more comfortable, or you could jump in with a warrior or an AI build as Lux stated.

Other non-AI builds that are somewhat simpler to achieve success with than glass cannon ranger might be:
—Bunker guardian (or maybe dps guardian)
—Sword-dagger/shortbow thief
—Celestial/strength rune d/d elementalist

Tell us your build and people can give you better advice.

If you are getting killed a lot you might want to go for a really tanky build.

Btw, the three classes/builds you mentioned as difficult are probably hard for most people to beat 1vs1.

I think it’s better to look at profession & builds. Easiest builds to play atm are

- Hambow Warrior
- Turret Engi
- Decap Engi (although turrets are more on the rage now)
- Spirit Ranger
- Bunker Staff Ele (x/x/x/6/6)
- Power Necro w/ Lich Form
- Bunker Guard

Try out condi ranger. Power is a very nasty and touchy build.

10-0-30-30-0 with shortbow and spirits or 0-10-30-0-30 for bm. Both builds can take you to the highest tier of play if you know them well.

Lux.7169:

Warrior. Turreteer. MM.

This is pretty much your best bet. I’d also add spirit ranger to this list.

The basic concept of release all your passives (spirits, minions, turrets) will work perfectly fine in solo queue except at the highest levels. Just remember to fight on points at all times with those specs.
