I am going to put it(so all you mesmer’s get your flame throwers ready). As a ranger(precision/con damage) how in the world do you even attempt to fight a mesmer. Is their some little detail that allows you to discover the real one. As i just got done with spvp and it took me and two other people and yet the mesmer toasted us all. Well I wont call it being op maybe I just need to work on my strategy vs mesmers but still reflecting back to my question. Please give me a direct answer, this means I do not want to hear flames, given mathematical calculations, etc.

Thank you

The main tip is to look at his illusions…the real mesmer moves very differently and is also casting skills. Unless he stealth, you can keep track of him. Not very easy I suppose for a new player, but after getting a bit used to it, it becomes fairly easy!

A few other tips in general, if you’re playing ranger and new to pvp, make sure your projectiles aren’t getting blocked by clones. Always lock your pet on the real mesmer. And try to avoid his shatters, which you should notice because his illusions all move forward to you.

Good luck!

You can pick out the mesmer from the way they move, mesmer clones and all AI creatures cannot move and attack at the same time, while a player can. Mesmer clones also move in different patterns and they don’t contort their bodies in weird ways (from holding down right mouse and panning the camera). After a while you will be able to pick out the mesmer faster.

The other part is understanding how the clones are made. There are a limited number of skills and traits that make them. In other words if you see the mesmer using a staff you know that he has Phase Retreat, so if he teleports backward and leaves a purple trail he’s the one behind. If two clones appear out of nowhere and the mesmer seems to disappear he used Decoy, he’ll pop up after 4 seconds. If the mesmer is low on health and is trying to escape, but there are new clones running toward you every time he dodges that is Deceptive Evasion. Every time you see a new clone try to associate the clone with a skill or trait.

Anet likely didn’t want to remove the armor stats entirely because…well,
we’ve all seen what happens in games where there’s no disadvantage to taking your pants off.

It also helps a lot when, after you’ve found the real mesmer, you target him with ctrl-T.
