there are different issues with PVP, the 2 that stand out the most are
- It’s not rewarding enough. there is no intensive to do PvP, glory/tournament chest become more of a nuisance than a reward and Ranks don’t actually reflect a player’s skill level, but rather how much time they’ve spent on hot joins
- PvP is not-user friendly, Everything from changing traits to salvaging PvP rewards are time consuming and far from enjoyable, it feels more like a job than a game. Also.. PvP itself is not user friendly, new inexperienced players will be matched up against veterans, turning their their first PvP experienced into “that time I got killed over and over and couldn’t do anything about it”
The game mode doesn’t help, conquest as a lone game mode invites for alot of zerging on hot joins (first place where new players go), and this can become an annoying/frustrating experience for both sides. and misleading to what PvP really is.
Class balance can also be added to a bad user experience, currently the strongest classes/builds are the ones AI controlled or the ones custom made by Anet to fit into an specific order. an example of each would be:
AI controlled: Rangers. thier pets have too much damage, allowing the ranger to go completely bunker while the pets deal as much damage as other classes, the ranger itself have very little control other this pets limited to telling them who to attack or to use 1 skill (f2).
Custom made by Anet, these would be mainly the thief and mesmers. thief have no cooldowns but initiative, with a limited resource the common thinking would be to spend it all on the “best” skill which is what players do, with the popular S/D build, thief players spam 2 skills with occasionally auto attack making it shallow yet so effective since they can deal great dmg, evade and steal boons with nothing more than pressing 1 skill over and over.
Mesmer is a combination of the 2, both AI controlled and Custom made “seems” to be the identity of the class, their role is diminish to casting illusion, then the illusions will make sure on their own to follow the target, deal dmg and make sure they always have a clear line of sight, besides this strong AI controlled mechanic on a short cool down, their strongest weapons are custom made to work a certain way, the best example would be the sword; #2 roots the player to the ground, turns invulnerable and deals good dmg while #3 teleports the player to the enemy and immobilize them, and since they both have the same cool down. it would seem dumb to use these abilities in any other way. and with shatters having no cast time, it fits in perfectly with this pre-designed combo.

Im trying to get into spvp now but it is just so slow and boring. lvl 7 at the moment and it takes about 5-6 games to lvl one. The only reward I get from leveling is gear skins that kinda look different? Rubbish. I try to level a few levels a day but Im sick of start a game. go capture point a then b fight over c oops they ninja capped a and b. do it again. I take my guardian and I rarely die as a tanky build. So to spice things up I usually try to run into 4-5 of the enemy and see how long I can troll em while team caps everything else.

GW2 is a design i’ve been waiting for for 10+ years.. PEWPEW minus the mindnumbing grind prerequisite.

in my short observation:
if you are in pvp for goodies, gear superiority (which then stimes translates in false superiority of skills), rewards – gw2 is not exactly your game.
if you pvp for main purpose of SKILLS grind and solely this is the only grind you want from game – then gw2 is THE game for you.

What niche exactly? GW1 was a huge success and was most popular during the WoW Phenomenon. GW1 is a Win.
I agree with the OP that sPvP simply isn’t fun enough. Bring back HA or better yet a new and improved HA. Same with GvG. This game will never be a true eSport because of the all Conquest game mode.

It gets more fun past level 10. You should concentrated more on v 5v5s and duel servers, and look for a team for tournies when you’re comfortable with your class. Leveling gets a lot slower after level 10. Tournaments are really the only thing worth it in pvp. Even then, you still don’t get rewards for your team rating, which you should.
Not having fun, but only because my class gets teh shaft in balance. In competitive PvP, I hardly feel like I have the ability to compete on Necromancer. I loved it when I was playing Mesmer and ranger, but gosh is it too frustrating to play Necromancer to bother.

Necromancer can actually be very useful and viable on a structured team. However, in hot join or solo queue it can be very frustrating right now. I’d suggest looking for a group of players you can play with regularly. It should make things a bit easier for ya until necro gets some things fixed (which should be soon, Anet agrees that they have a slight issue. Also, just be glad your not a warrior =P)

That’s why I’m not enjoying spvp. Too much PEW PEW and not enough THINK THINK.
Yeh. I find the game fun akittens core but all the popular (powerful) builds involve mechanics which are not fun to fight against. I think good design should be fun for the person using the build and the person not using it.
Perma evasion with rangers and thieves isnt fun to play against. Is it OP? I dont care. I personally dont find it fun to play against perma dodging builds including when that same build has AI which is able to do all the work for them (ranger) or when it also includes the ability to blink away constantly and so never die (sword thief).
Not fun. Dont care about balance. It is all about fun. They should work on nerfing the crap that makes the game lame rather than just what is op

From the responses, it seems that few people want to engage the team aspect, just like in WvW. Just attack, attack, attack and gloat while you’re back-capped. No one wants to defend.

The OP didn’t really help start that discussion. As you can clearly see. He gave no viewpoints of his own, and no reasons why he thinks sPvP is not fun.

The game had potential but it has just been managed poorly. Too many mechanics aren’t adding to the game the way they should be.
Some things that just aren’t fun:
Interaction between players is not emphasized.
AI centric
Downed state
Emphasis on rotations and creating uneven fights / escaping from uneven fights
Node control / bunkers
Lack of build diversity / Balance
Poor reward system
Many of these issues have seen no progress and in fact in many instances they are reoccurring mistakes. Many people here might disagree that these are issues but that is why they are still playing when many have moved on.
Our team is looking into professional play. Every day is tough, but fun. We find joy in improvement and facing even better teams.
That’s the endgame of the endgame xD the crown of PvP is just… PvP. Good players vs. good players.
The reason I don’t find sPvP as fun as other mmos is the maps. They’re all just conquest points, that’s it. I love the combat, just playing conquest over and over again gets old fast.
Take SWTOR for example. Back when I played it there were only four maps.
Civil War- Conquest
Void Star- Attack and Defend
Hutt Ball- hmm don’t really know how to explain this one. But it was the best game mode ever!
Novare Coast- Conquest with a twist
The combat was just a WoW clone, but the maps is what made it great.
Heavens Rage
Up to personal opinion, but I find Spvp far more entertaining than WvW. I really like getting into the 1v1 dueling servers. They just need to build a map solely for watching people fight gladiator style, where you can enter the map and physically spectate outside the walls and cheer on your favorite player while you queue to enter. And how awesome would it be if they included a system where you can bet on the matches?
Also, I’m not opposed to the conquest system but I feel there should be variances in map sizes. I’d like to see some large maps for 20 players to run around in, like 1/3 of a WvW map size.
The irony is that they wanted to casualize the PvP and make it more open for new players. Instead it is nowadays even more restrictive than GW1 back its days.
