What if I started a new basketball league to compete with the NBA. Imagine during development time if I touted it as the next big basketball league to rival the NBA.

Then, imagine I televised the first game and it didn’t have a shot clock, the refs had to stop play for 5 minutes to decide what to do on fouls and the stands didn’t have any seats. Then lets say most of our money was spent on advertisement and not actually paying players to….you know…play the game.

That would be silly. Right?

I imagine people would post on the league website and say awesome things like “The NBA has been around since the 1950’s. You imagine a new league can have a shot clock already when the NBA has been around for 80 years????”

I think just about everyone agrees with you.
Of course, there are a few zealots that will make excuses.

This is kind of a bad analogy.

For one, making another basketball league with the same rules and objectives as the NBA would be more equivalent to making another video game that had the exact same gameplay and objectives as another game that has already been released.

The difference is, GW2 is trying to be as different from any other game and as original as it can. It doesn’t need a “shot clock” because its not “another basketball league.” It’s a completely new “sport” with its own rules and regulations.

With that said, this new “sport” ANet has created is clearly not as popular as some of those already being played, and it definitely has its flaws, but ANet has a vision of what they want their game to be.

Hopefully there is more to come, and some much needed improvements

I also think this analogy is quite bad.

The guys that invented basketball didn’t make your new sports leaugue bad. That was all your fault.
This analogy would actually work like this: Anet invented basketball. MLG sees that there’s an audience for basketball broadcasts and wants to monetize on it. That means you pay MLG for their broadcast service and your complains go to them, if you are disappointed with their product and not to Anet, as they just inveted the game

And in all seriousness we could already have major GW2 leagues, if this community would be stronger. Sure, we got no private servers, but they are really only relevant for amateur leagues. Do you really think that it is impossible for the big esports companies to set up a broadcasts only because there is no spectator mode? Surely they would find workarounds and it’s really not that hard, if only the demand for a broadcasts was big enough.
In fact ESL already said they would be interested in picking up GW2. As far as I know that still didn’t happen and it seems like GW2 players aren’t really interested anyway. Maybe the majority is just in it for PvE.

^It didnt happen because Guild Wars 2 could not join it due to the lack of custom games.

Imagine if I created a sequel to a game. I touted it as being the e-Sports MMO.

Then I don’t have a ranking system.
I don’t have a spectator system.
I don’t allow custom games.
There is no matchmaking based on skill.
There are no leagues.

And I make a statement saying broadcasting and shoutcasting matches from someone else’s fraps will be removed from Youtube.

Then after 6 months I focus on balancing classes.

The question I keep asking myself is this:

Was the lack of features just a time issue where they wanted certain things in and NCSoft pushed them to release before it was ready, or are the lack of features a deliberate omission because the “we’re the future e-sport” claims were just a way to sell copies to people like me?

Gw2 is like the xfl. Trying to do football but in a new abstract way. And just like the xfl it’s going down in flames and no amount of tweaks and changes can save it from anything more than a niche side game in a pve mmo.

if they asked me to wait 1-6 months because they want to implement monk and gvg, i will gladly wait silently, maybe spending some € for gems and pve…

There’s far too much of this “I’ve been tricked into buying the game” malarkey going on here, if you don’t think the purchase was worth it that’s your fault. More to the point though, there’s no use in complaining now anyway since they can’t undo their marketing.

Thats nothing. What about the players that can teleport around the court and shoot the ball while invisible
