So I have been mulling this idea around for a couple of days. One of the biggest things holding pvp back are poor initial placement matches. I believe if placements were to be a more accurate representation of a players skill, that people will get placed closer to where they belong and the whole system would work a lot more efficiently. Better quality games, happier pvp population. These ideas I hope would be supplementary, not a replacement. Here are a few things that I think could do some good:

Questionnaire: on rotations, which matchups to take and which not to, basic strategies i.e. when to leave mid to play sides, map specific must do’s. Questions should be different based on what class you are on. Would be a good idea to have a lot of different versions to discourage cheating. For the most part I think this would do ok but its still not 100% trustworthy obviously so I would guess this part would have less of an effect on the outcome of placement.

Coordination assessment: you get ported to an area where you must dodge some meta build bursts, must survive 1 min vs (insert here), must kill x amount of enemies within x amount of time, etc. I’m not completely sure what exactly should be tested here other then how to dodge 101, but it seems like some other things could be squeezed into this part. Maybe not.

Live test: you take on a dry run of a real match, maybe 1st team to 50 points or something. This is where you prove you can do what you know. Tunnel vision is real, bad judgement is real, this test should have the biggest effect out of the three. Maybe it could be done with all real players and some computer can be tic’ing off boxes based off of profession and amulet? So for example if I was a meta scrapper I should be bunkering home when they go for it, and if I didn’t and it was decapped I would get a fail. Something along those lines. Obviously its going to be a lot more complicated then that.

Well that’s what I’ve come up with so far. It would be a lot of work to do, but the returns would be great. Poor match quality is the number one reason why people don’t play this game, either because of team mates making really bad calls, lopsided teams, profession stacking/ one side being hard countered etc. etc. Not all of the problems can be solved over night, but we can make this game a much more enjoyable experience for all.
