Improving SPVP

I would really enjoy having something like this similar to TF2. Learning new maps would be much easier.
Bra (80 Guard), Fixie Bow (80 Ranger), Wcharr (80 Ele)
Xdragonshadowninjax (80 Thief)
how are u going to get people to actually watch the vid? i’m guessing less people would sit thru a vid tutorial than people who watch the story mode w/o skipping to the end.
guess u could not let them skip the first time they enter a map? don’t let them queue until they watch it?
i agree its an issue, but i don’t have a solution
Make it fun with a bit of reward for hitting each point ?
I am uncertain I think what a tutorial can do is limited, this is where we need people to teach and train.
Maybe a training center where Experienced players can help new players. With slight incentives.
what they do in heroes of the storm when you play matches in the practice mode is, they show you a short video of the map and the objectives before the match starts. i really like the way they do it.

its tough to incentivize w/o opening exploits for farming.
i just don’t think epople will watch a vid.
possible update that starting pvp area, the one thru that portal before the main hotm area.
u talk to the npc, u pic a map, it takes u to the map w/ npc baddies. use the dynamic events system to direct the player to diff objectives.
end of the match pops up the reward track, explain it a bit, give them enough reward points to get thru a full lvl (like lvl 1 of the 8 each track have). they get tons of chests, they feel accomplished. they continue to pvp.
its a 1 time per map thing per account. for rewards. can be repeated for people taht think they need to learn moar?
I would definitely watch a video like this, especially as a relatively new PvP player. I do read about the maps, but it’s not enough. Some teams have different strategies, sometimes I’m not sure where I should go after respawning, and teammates are often too busy fighting to communicate via chat. I try to do my best, practice a lot on my own time, but from time to time there’s people yelling at me or blatantly verbally abusing me because I didn’t go where they wanted. This is not the majority of the time, but it does suck when it happens. I understand there are trolls, or new players who actually don’t care about what happens, but I’m genuinely learning and figuring it out and can use all the help I can get!

That’s one thing I hate about PvP…
You read the map stuff, you get a few seconds to explore the map, then the timer counts down, I rush in and everything, almost everything I just red, suddenly packs up from my brain and goes “bye bye, you’re on your own now!”
It’s so fast, my brain has trouble keeping up with all the info.
Hmm, maybe at a slower pace (read, no hopping around/running skills), with NPC enemies (bots as they used to call them in Unreal Tournament lol)… idk, something like that.
Maybe, like someone mentioned, the system Heroes Of The Storm uses.

If you make it a requirement for PvP on the very first day, then they will have no choice but watch the totorial for every first map they get on. Afterwards, they’ll never see the tutorial again unless a new account is made or a completely new map is added.
This is a good idea and definitely something that should be inplemented. Just so yall know, other Moba games have had this feature for a long time

As old as TF2 is, it’s amazing how many of their good pvp ideas still haven’t made it into GW2. There are so many other games out there with popular, intuitive systems. I’d given up on thinking that Anet devs were even keeping these things on their radar, as the focus seems to be on re-inventing the wheel for everything pvp.
It’s good to see someone at ArenaNet acknowledge the value of pvp design that could inform GW2 design.
A lot of helpful people have made videos explaining the basics of each map, and some of those are linked to in the sticky at the top (though that needs updating), but ANet need to understand that only a tiny proportion of the playerbase ever visits the forums! Every other game mode in GW2 works on a “jump in, have fun, <…>, profit” basis, so it’s not reasonable to expect people to alt-tab out of the game, go online and do RESEARCH before they can play pvp! (It’s reasonable to expect people who want to get good at it to go read guides and watch videos, but not complete beginners) Most of them will jump in, get confused, hear lots of abuse from their teammates for not knowing what they’re doing, and leave forever.
Unfortunately, Conquest has a lot unintuitive mechanics that need explaining before you can play. How do you get points? How fast do you get points? Are all nodes worth the same? Do they cap faster with more than 1 person on them? Why did the other team get the points for Chieftain even though I did 95% of the damage on him? What do each of the buffs on Temple do? All these things need explaining in-game, and the best way to do it is by introducing scripted tutorial missions, where you and a bunch of NPCs fight out specific scenarios that teach specific mechanics about each map.
It need not be a lot of work designing those. All the maps are done, all the models are ready, you just need to script the scenarios and maybe record some voiceover telling the player to “go decap their home point!” or “help us out by trebbing mid!” etc. For best results, contract some community members to consult on these mini-missions.
Improving pvp is hard but making it look good well… This fight scene at 39:40-41:00 pretty much sums it up.

Why can’t gw2 look that epic…? this isn’t even an animation.
Other than that, pvp just needs balance.
I think something similar to presearing ascalon in Guild Wars 1 would be a good idea for Pvp.
Tiny little town, maybe done in a military academy theme ran by the Priests of Balthazar, all the mechanics are there and some npcs to explain how things work. Once you are ready to leave that town you are placed in a conquest map with other people who have NEVER played a pvp game before. Once the match is over, as long as you scored 5 points you are able to move on to the heart of the mists. If you do not score 5 points, you are kicked back to the academy and you have to start over.
Once this has been done at least once, you are able to go straight to the heart of the mists on any character.
If there are not enough players to fill out both teams, NPCs will take their place and they will just have a predefined route for A → B →C and the ability to attack the opposing team if they are within range.
just a hasty idea.. I’m sure there are tons of flaws and what not.
Just something to consider and expand upon idea wise or stir up some more talk.
