Please bear with this sPvP/tPvP newb; I’ve been a heavy WvWer since launch who spends my time 75% solo roaming, 15% duo roaming, 10% zerging. The only time I’ve spent in sPvP prior to this was screwing around at launch and then in March for the bugged double monthly reward. I have watched tons of Teldo/TP/etc videos so I have a pretty good grasp on how tPvP should be played.

I jumped into solo queue tPvP last week. I was rank 6 when I started last week and I’m now rank 9. I have been frequently achieving 1st or 2nd place in points on my team, sometimes 3rd, 4th once (I think), and never 5th (yet). This is in matches where there are often no other players lower than rank 30.

My question is: generally speaking, how useful are the final individual scores when it comes to gauging how much someone contributed to their team’s effort? Is coming in 1st/2nd telling me that I’m doing something right? Is score heavily biased in favor of roamers (the role I’ve been filling) due to boss kills/ganks? Is score almost meaningless?

Thanks <3

The score is almost meaningless in my opinion. As a thief I am sometimes baiting 1v3 situations where I hold and distract them while my team does some capping. What do you get for that advantage? 0 points. Theres really no way they can metric this though, but it serves as a point that in some cases the points you get mean nothing. Especially when Im in a hotjoin I just pointwhhore my way into 1rst places pretty much all the time.

Score really means nothing in any form of sPvP honestly. In hot join, it just means the person didn’t die much; arguably this could be a measure of skill or it could be that the person spent a lot of time running from fights between points and just hitting downed players or getting the final hits in on someone who was low during another fight.

In tPvP you get practically nothing for defending points but those are the guys you are pretty much carried by. You can roam back and forth all you want, and will probably get first place on your team, but if you have no one defending points you will lose and lose hard.

This.

Totally agree.. Would get rid of this zerg mentality and force people to follow the mechanics of conquest mode.

The scoring system, to me, is the biggest and most overlooked flaw in weening in new players to learn how to play from hotjoin into tPvP, and I’ve been complaining about it since launch.

It rewards play that is considered terrible play in tPvP, and promotes glory farming for rank. It teaches bad habits to new players, and promotes a general lack of team play in that the non-selfish players do not get rewarded. There should never be any good reason for 4-5 players to stand on one point and wait to get their glory before running off again. There should never be a player blowing all his swiftness CDs to race across the battlefield to stand on a point that’s already being capped uncontested.

Very little use, despite that many people still use it as a metric of player contribution because its the only one that is given up front at the end.

No. All it really shows is that you were not AFK

Is score heavily biased in favor of roamers (the role I’ve been filling) due to boss kills/ganks?

Yes

Is score almost meaningless?

Pretty much. You can have a score of ZERO, and still contribute to the match. (E.G you can bunk 2v1 3v1 at a node, never die or kill anyone or even cap, but the mere fact you are handling 3v1 means it ezier for the rest of the team to win their fights.)

It’s not completely meaningless, but it’s not that important. I’ve had games where I felt like I dominated and the score screen only showed me with 90 points, and on the flip side I’ve felt like a played terribly and ended up with 500+ glory.

Yep pretty meaningless in tpvp. Bunkers will usually get less points throughout the match as opposed to roamers etc. but that doesn’t mean that their role within the team is any less valuable.

In hotjoin it does constitute how much glory you get though… But who cares really.
