Initial League Start
There would be close to no climb for legendary players. And I think it rewards lower level players too much.
The only reason that you see a big disparity of skill between diamond and Legendary is due to the forced artificial inflation by having division and tier safeguards, remove the safeguards and the actual diamond and Legendary skilled players would be a lot closer in skill level. But the leagues are a huge joke anyways so it doesn’t matter.
Removing safeguards would intensify the problems with needing to advance vs. the system trying to prevent players from advancing. ANET attempted mutually exclusive goals. To whit, to attract players from pve with a large reward and to make high levels ( and therefore the reward ) difficult to obtain. As a result, they’ve failed in both.
Beside that, it would super-concentrate players in Amber. The resulting frustration would bleed off even more players.
Making the legendary a simple (long) reward track would be the logical move. If that were done and Solo Queue returned, I think the tournament system would begin to work.
Removing safeguards would intensify the problems with needing to advance vs. the system trying to prevent players from advancing.
It’s called, not being good enough. Second, you don’t “need” to advance. You want to advance but don’t deserve to.
Removing safeguards would actually cause people to improve game play, since by nature Player vs Player is a competitive mode while PvE is not.
The PvP back piece wasn’t soley made to attract PvE players, yes it provided an incentive to try PvP and to improve at it but that wasn’t the only goal of it, a lot of players bleed into multiple gamemodes I sometime help my guild Raid or do high level fractals, or I roam in WvW another PvP gamemode where stats are needed.
PvE players do have a legendary back piece available in their own content so why would they need to force themselves to compete in PvP for one?
But now moving forward rewards will be split from league placement so you wouldn’t have to worry about being “gated” in PvP if they removed the ridiculous safeguards. Leagues should be competitive and should have been from the very start, the safeguards over inflated people’s ego and placed them in divisions they shouldn’t have since you could never actually balance to your level, it was always forced upward progression.

That’s an interesting statement. The “legendary” prize was set out to attract players. It was strongly represented as a prize “everyone” could win.
How do I not “deserve” to be able to gain a prize that was allegedly for “everyone?” As an element of the set “everyone,” I deserve to be able to win the prize.
If it were a question of deserving and of skill, everyone would have to solo queue. That would prevent carrying. The matches would be set dead even.
Most importantly, ANET would never have presented the prize as being for everyone. They did, and here’s why:
There aren’t enough players to support the ultra competitive system a certain number of the posters claim to want. That is the simple reality.

It was never said that it was a prize everyone would win. The exact words were:
When the PvP League season begins, everyone will have an opportunity to follow the Path of the Ascension to earn the new PvP legendary backpiece. To create the Ascension, you’ll need the Gift of the Competitor, the Gift of Skirmishing, the Gift of Fortune, as well as the precursor, the Wings of Legend.
Let’s look at the first sentence, “Everyone will have and Opportunity” not everyone will get the wings. They guarantee you the ability to work towards the wings.
Anet kittened up as they often do. The system was suppose to be about skill but turned out to be just another reward track. As for the legendary, you can have it. I don’t give a kitten if Anet removed ranked requirement from it altogether. The point is League was suppose to represent skill and it doesn’t because of things like pip safeguards and promises to “everyone”.

I think that the pvp legendary should be a reward track. It could easily be a long one that required playing a good part of each season.
As to skill. Unfair matchmaking eliminated the question of skill in seasons 2 and 3. That’s been rescinded which is a big step in the right direction.
The step that would really straighten things out would be to require everyone to solo que. This would prevent solo farming and force people to advance on there own merits, not be carried by being on a coordinated team.
Given those two things; reward track for the shiny and all solo queue, I’d be fine with seeing safety nets removed. I don’t think it would be healthy for the game though. Being stuck in lower ranks would frustrate too many players and population would drop further.

Or the could force all players be in teams before queueing since conquest PvP was designed for organized teams, not Solo Queuers, then the gamemode would be played as intended, and people would still have a fair chance.
And if they get frustrated with losing they either get better or they leave which happens in all games with PvP, but it would attract more dedicated / competitive players also bolstering the population, especially if they get balance more under control.
And the leagues were not skill based also do to the safeguards can’t be skilled based if you can’t lose your position and just get forced into higher divisions.
There again, the population won’t support it. I’m reasonably sure ANET would like to see an all premade tournament.
Here’s the issue with that; Very quickly, all the players considered “good” would be recruited to teams. I can see huge issues happening with that. We’d see players charging gold to be on a team or to allow others on teams. This would rapidly degenerate into pay-to-win.
Those considered “bad” would then have to pick up teams where they could. Then we’d be right back to heavily unbalanced blowout matches. It would be very much a caste system. Such a system would bleed players like a cut Femoral Artery.
The soloists, like myself, would be out in the cold.
Why would being recruited be a bad thing? If you are good and people want you that’s fine, and every tournament that was ever in existence were pre mades.
And you are dealing in fringe cases and if people are willin to pay gold to be on teams to advance their position then nothing is wrong there that means someone was wanting that service anyways we saw that with These current leagues anyway people offering gold so they could reach legend.
And you wouldn’t see blowouts you would see more balanced matches since then the system would better reflect MMR, and you would be facing people closer in MMR especially without any safeguards.
You make the most extreme worst case hypothetical situations.
The game mode was never designed for Solo queues, otherwise they would have had the 1v1/2v2/3v3 style matches. they did allow Solo Queuers but the game mode was definitely not setup for them.

That already happens though.
Had 7 different “teams” (guilds) advertising in HoTM today, 1000g to carry amber-diamond and 5000 gold to carry amber-legendary. And 2 others advertising 300g per tier.
All of the people begging to have “loosing pips to allow you to drop down tiers”. Don’t realize at all what they are asking for.
Because they will be here crying when “my bad team-mates made me lose my legendary rank, its totally not my fault” Not realizing that there is actually very few skilled legendary players, and they themselves are not actually legendary players by their own standards.
Meanwhile all the legendary players can thankfully queue up in other maps because they will be queuing for one game for hours.
I wouldn’t mind seeing how it would have a better reflection of your skill, they would just have to tie it to a game wide MMR reset and boom people complain already so no change there.
There is more incentive to stay at the lower tiers then there is to grind up to legendary. Why bother? So you can wait in q for 20 mins…?
Or my personal favorite “because there more skillful” it’s cute that they think they can measure skill in a skill less game.
You guy’s should of just trolled ranked all year like i did. I have no desire to get on board with there wing fetish, but i only need to climb out of emerald to get kinky.

I already have my wings, and I didn’t play during S1, with no problem on a ranked MMR.
I’m just saying that they could make their PvP better and reflect better on the players, but they would have to implement a real league/ladder style system. And not the casual farm fest known as The path of Ascension leagues.
- forced 50% w/l ratio needs to go
- MMR should be reset every season
- i think current initial placement based on division of last season is Ok actually
- artificial floors need to go: if you lose 3 matches in a row at 0 pts -> lose tier; if you lose 5 matches in a row at 0 pts -> lose division
- WTB BETTER REWARDS IN LEGEND so people don’t just stop pvp after they reached the division (like me ._. )
- wtb soloq back :/
[Teef] guild :>
The premise is simple.
Stuffing Legendaries and Diamonds together down into Sapphire creates a bad game experience at the start of the season.
The reason is because the diamond players get continually stomped at the beginning until the majority of the legendary skilled players move up a league.
For solo queue players who are anything less than legendary it makes for an unfair and bad gaming experience.
If legendary started in diamond, and diamond in ruby (and so and and so forth on down) then what happens is a level playing field right from the start.
You know that the divisions have never been a reflection of skill, it has been proven that you can manipulate your way to higher divisions each season… The problem is that they never reset MMR for leagues and that there are Saffe pips making people think they were better than they actually were, if you can’t lose pips from the beginning then no tier actually shows skill since you can’t move downward for being bad.
The previous seasons favored Newer Accts with above average MMR baseline at 1500 you were generally placed on the winning team older Accts were at a disadvantage when it came to match making,’the very first season allowed for MMR averages to be manipulated, this season allows you to manipulate matchmaking by ganking you MMR while in the safe pip ranges so the match makers favors you and places you with better MMR players

and then you get those lovely people who drop tiers on purpose for easy games cause they already have their back piece.
