Inquiry about pvp status at this time
Custom arenas are really only used for specialty rooms (which are now pretty inactive), and tournaments.
The leaderboards are working, but no one takes the Solo Q leaderboards seriously due to a flawed rating mechanic which predominantly puts the top 5 players in Q against the lower 5 in Q, thus creating a big mis-match in fights.
I do like both features, and hopefully the meta changes with tomorrows ‘huge’ skill balance update. ATM the meta is extremely stale.
I have insane thoughts sometimes that matching higher ranks with lower ranks happens because there’s not enough people (read almost none) playing pvp tournaments and they’ve implemented it this way so we won’t complain about waiting times which would happen if match making would be better.
Maybe it’s just me silly thoughts.
no
they made it easy and took teamQ system and copied it + disabled TeamQ Button = SoloQ (outcry in forum at this moment was big and neraly every thread was about soloQ so they had to do it fast)
For there teamQ they never needed to think bout matching ppl cause teams where made by ppl – now it shows the flaws
but its better than nothing – getting farmed by premades in teamQ was still more ugly

Hey everyone, I played GW2 for couple of months last year and was amazed at this game, was hooked on pvp, loved the combat.. but eventually grew tired of pvping for no rank and status (other than item looks)
I’ve been browsing the forum a bit and saw a couple of new features added (custom arenas, and a mention of a ranking system?) and i just wanted a current players opinion on how things work now

Things are working pretty well right now. Matchmaking is not perfect and leaderboards need tweaking, but they are both huge improvements over last year, when they didn’t exist.

Please don’t take this the wrong way, but your posts are interesting to me. I’m sure you read negative feedback toward the game a lot and wonder how people could type it, but I often ask myself the same thing about your posts.

That’s like saying, “the economy could use a little stimulation and politicians sometimes tell little white lies, but overall, the US is in a good place”
we have a broken matchmaking and broken leaderboards, but it’s better than having nothing i guess..

Look at it from my perspective. A year ago, I was solo joining free tourneys because it was either that or hotjoins. I didn’t play enough to join a dedicated 4+hr/day team and do paids once a night, so I soloed vs. randoms, vs. premades, vs. esports-level teams. There was no matchmaking of any kind and no leaderboard of any kind. There was also no way to play solo against other people playing solo.
A year later, tournaments have been reworked. I play a couple of solo matches most nights. I still don’t have enough time to join a dedicated team, but at least I can track my progress on the solo leaderboards. Sure, I’d be maybe 5 or 10 ranks higher if the leaderboards were working better, but that’s not making me lose sleep at night. Matchmaking isn’t perfect, but it sure beats soloing into a free tourney and losing 500-7 to a dedicated paid tourney team farming tickets to play their 2-3 paid tournaments that evening.
So when the OP asks, “have things improved?” there can only be one answer for me. They have improved drastically. Is everything great? No. But that’s a different question. The game launched early and was missing some core features at launch. Those now exist. There’s still more to be done, but how is that not an improvement?
The economy isn’t perfect and people still vote for dumb politicians, but overall the United States is in a much better position than 1986 Soviet Russia. Or present-day Pakistan or Egypt or Nigeria or North Korea or Iran or Peru or Mexico or Italy.
